New Bishop Survey! Help choose the next bishop of the diocese by registering your hopes and concerns. An all-diocese survey has been released by the Search Committee:  tinyurl.com/mi-bishopsurvey

A 150th BBQ/Potluck/Concert/Bonfire!      A huge celebration is planned for Saturday, July 14th on the front lawn of the church starting at 6 o’clock. Our men’s group will be grilling burgers and dogs. Parishioners will bring potluck sides or desserts (soft drinks provided, but bring your own adult beverages). From 6:30 to 8:30 the musical group “Picks and Bows” will be playing lively music of the type people would have enjoyed in the 1860’s. And we’ll end the evening with a great bonfire on the front lawn. Friends, family, community members are all welcome.

The Weds Morning Service will not be held this week due to the 4th of July Holiday.

Fr. Phil will be away on church business from July 2-14 in Austin, Texas. He was elected by the diocese to serve as a deputy at General Convention. Despite its humble name, the General Convention of the Episcopal Church is serious business. Held only once every three years, this is the highest law-making body of our church. Our Constitution and Canons come from this body. Our liturgies are developed and approved by this body. New directions in policy, polity, and mission are proposed and finalized by this body. Each diocese sends 4 clergy and 4 lay people, plus their bishop; thus, the Convention is comprised of over 1000 clergy/lay members and over 200 bishops. Please pray for the Episcopal Church during these weeks, for the General Convention, for our bishops and deputies, and for Fr. Phil.

We are asking everyone to please get a new picture taken for our directory. It only takes a few minutes and is a great time to update your family picture on your wall! Since this is our 150th Anniversary, and we are partying it up this year, we would really like an updated directory with all of your smiling faces. You can sign up on our website at saintjamesgi.net to reserve your spot. We ask that you sign up soon, as spots are filling quickly. If you cannot make our two dates we will try to have make up dates available for you soon.

One Wonderful, Beautiful, Special Service of Worship will be held on Sunday, July 15th at 10AM under a lovely tent next to our historical chapel. We are thrilled that our bishop will preside at this special service. We are also overjoyed to welcome the Rev. Dr. Shannon MacVean-Brown, Canon of Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis, to be our guest preacher for the morning. Shannon began her ministry in the Diocese of Michigan, where she most recently served as Rector of St. Matthew’s and St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Detroit. During that time she led her congregation to start a community development organization, worked with an interfaith group to open a client-choice food pantry that as a collaboration between several churches and nonprofits, and led her parish to become a vital presence in the transformation of the neighborhood around them.

Our Parish Secretary is on vacation this week. Phones will be answered Tuesday through Friday from 9am – noon by volunteers. If you need administrative support we will be happy to assist you when Colleen is back on July 10th.

Register for VBS online at www.saintjamesgi.net. Vacation Bible School is a free week-long day camp open to all members of Saint James, residents of the Island, and friends. Children from 3 years old to 5th grade participate in all activities, while older youth get to serve as helpers and leaders. All are welcome! Adults, we need your help too. Please speak to Nancy Crysler, our children’s ministries coordinator, if you are available to help. August 13-17, 9-11:30am.

Prayer Ministry This Summer  continues in the chapel. If you would like prayers during communion, come to the back of the church by the red doors that lead to the front parking lot. In that small narthex the prayer minister will be glad to hear your needs and pray with you.

Save the Float  We are in need of a place to store our beautiful Island chapel float to be used in future years. Please let us know if you have a pole barn or storage area that could help.

The Next Soup Kitchen Will Be July 21st  Sign-ups will be on the Soup Kitchen bulletin board in the hallway between the Sunday School room and the Choir room.  Our Prep Crew will meet in our Chapel parking lot at 8:20am to load up they cars and head out. Servers should be at Spirit of Hope by 11:30am.  We will all be on our way home, or out to lunch, by 1:40pm.  The August 18th meal will be prepared and served by the Detroit Moose Hockey Team, so we will have it off.

Open Bible Study  A drop-in Bible Study runs every Sunday morning from 9:05-9:50AM in the Fireplace Room. The study requires no preparation, and you can come on whatever Sundays are convenient for you. Drop in any time!

The Thursday Study Group is taking a sabbatical during the summer. Look for announcements later this summer for the new sessions that will begin in mid-August or early September and continue through the program year.

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed   Can you take a turn volunteering in the kitchen during coffee hour? You would make the coffee and tea, bring a simple snack and cleanup. Coffee, tea, sugar, creamer, napkins/plates are provided. It is a great way to get involved at St. James. Ask someone to help you. There is a signup sheet on the table in Galloway Hall. Joan Hemsworth is available to show you the ropes.

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Prayer at Communion is available every Sunday at the 10AM service. Prayer Team members stand at either side of the altar rail. After you receive the bread and wine, engage a prayer team member and ask for prayer of any kind, which they will offer on your behalf. Prayer requests are confidential.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tues-Thurs 9-2, &  Fri 9-noon.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available by appointment any time, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello. (Fr. Phil is out of town on church business from July 2-14; he will be on vacation with family from July 24-August 5.)

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Music Notes:  In honor of Independence Day, this morning’s music is all by composers active in America in during the first hundred years of our country. Pipe organs of that time were not much different from our Chapel organ, with the exception that you had to pay someone (usually a local boy) to pump the organ!

Upcoming Music Events:

Summer Music Listening Classes continue in July. These classes last about an hour, during which we will talk about a significant composer of church music and listen to one or more major works. In June, classes will be:

July 19, 7:30pm: Ola Gjeilo (b. 1978) and the Sunrise Mass

July 26, 7:30pm: George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) and the Resurrection Oratorio
