One Service of Worship will be held on Sunday, January 31st, at 10 AM so that the whole congregation can worship together and join in a meal following.
A Meal-Provided Parish Celebration will be held after the 10 AM service on Sunday, January 31. Potluck side dishes or desserts are welcome.
An All-Parish Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 31st, at 11:15 am.

Bring your Palms from last Palm Sunday and leave them in the church office any time before Ash Wednesday, February 9. Palms are burned to provide our ashes.

If Feet Could Talk is extremely grateful. Because of your generosity this Saint James sock drive has already filled one and almost filled another 55 gallon collection drum with socks for the homeless in Detroit. To each and every one of you for each and every pair of socks you have donated — thank you. Each pair of socks will make a difference in the life of another. If Feet Could Talk will continue to collect socks in the future because providing socks for the homeless is a worthy ministry. The first deliveries of socks have begun and will continue in the coming weeks. Offering Envelopes are available. You can request envelopes by filling out a form (found on the table in the hallway outside the Treasurer’s office door) or simply contact the main office. Envelopes are not dated so can be used any time. Once your request is received you will be assigned a box and number. Using numbered offering envelopes helps ensure your contributions are counted for tax deduction purposes, streamlines the process for our counters each week, and is an at-home reminder of this important aspect of worship.

Shake and Shimmy in a beginner’s belly dance class. Come join this free introductory course taught by Erica Chappuis and have some fun while learning these ancient steps. This gentle dance is great exercise and is suited to every body in just about every shape. Dress for complete comfort and stretchability (leggings, leotards, yoga pants, t-shirts etc., are all great). Some hip scarves, veils and a few other props will be available so you can try them. Erica has taken belly dance for 12 years and been to performance workshops in Hawaii and Ann Arbor. Wednesday evenings at 7pm through February 3 in Galloway Hall.

An Open Bible Study is held every Sunday Morning in the Fireplace Room at 9:05 am. We are currently reading the Gospel of Luke one chapter at a time.
Coffee and Fellowship follow the 10am Service every Sunday in Galloway Hall. Volunteers are always needed to host. If you are not able to host a coffee hour but would like to contribute something we can always use packaged cookies or anything that can be frozen and used when there is no volunteer for a particular Sunday. Annual Meeting and All Parish Potluck: January 31st
A Significant Agenda Item for our annual meeting on Sunday, January 31, will be a diocese-required vote to resolve a property-encroachment issue with our neighbors to the north, by providing a limited and revocable license to them. This solution has been arrived at through discussions with the neighbors, the diocese, the surveyor, the vestry and parishioner Carl Colwell, who is an attorney. A full explanation, maps, and time for questions and answers will be provided at the annual meeting. Speak to a member of the vestry or Fr. Phil to learn more.
Out There With Outreach: February, March & April 2016
Sat. February 20th the Detroit Moose Hockey Team will do the entire day alone. This will give us and Sacred Heart the day off.
Sat. March 19th Sacred Heart will do the whole day alone, giving us the day off.
Sat. April 16th we will do that whole day alone: cooking and serving. This will give Sacred Heart the day off. We will need lots of help for that one!

Have a Bean to Grind?
A coffee barista will tell you that there are a number of keys to brewing coffee, with two of them being — 1) use quality water; since coffee is 98% water, and 2) use one to two tablespoons of coffee, preferably whole bean coffee that is ground just before brewing, for every six ounces of water.
Quality water is supplying the new/used commercial coffee brewer thanks to the new water line and filter that Dave and Steven Hemsworth installed. Stop by the kitchen and take a look at their fine work.
To grind whole bean coffee Saint James has a new/used commercial coffee grinder and it is in the other kitchen down the hall. Feel free to use it to grind your own regular whole bean coffee for use at home, but please don’t grind flavored whole bean coffee in it. Oily residues and odors from flavored coffee beans remain on the burrs and in the grind chamber and are transferred to the next bag of whole bean coffee that is ground. By grinding only regular, not flavored, whole bean coffee in the church coffee grinder all of us can enjoy great tasting coffee at Saint James as well as at home.

In the dark days of winter we sing of light. It’s no accident that the Church orders things so that we hear of the gift of light at the darkest time of year. Whether it’s the light of the star over Bethlehem, or the various manifestations of God in the man Jesus that we hear and sing about in the Epiphany season, we sing of the light of Christ. “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light” is one of our hymns this week. At 8 am we sing of this week’s Gospel where Jesus “comes out” as God in his first miracle at the wedding at Cana. As our Psalm sings to us this week “For with you is the well of life, and in your light we see light.”
