Giving between 3% and 10% of household income fuels the ministries of Saint James’ by providing for the cost of our building and grounds, staff, services and materials. The Biblical gold standard is 10% given to God’s work (some do give that much). Everyone’s circumstances are different – giving as little as 3% is the most some can afford. Whatever your situation, every gift given in love is acceptable to God. Thank you for doing your part!

An Online Pledge Card can be found at saintjamesgi.net/pledge with FAQ’s.

Lisette, our Church’s Founder, had an extraordinary life and vision. Her bequest founded this church in 1868. Yet for nearly 150 years she was buried in nearly anonymous circumstances at Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit. On Saturday, November 5 we will gather at 2:45pm at Elmwood with friends from around the diocese for a service of Holy Communion and a dedication of a new and more appropriate headstone for Lisette, including her image, an image of the chapel, and a short but informative epitaph. Also a tri-color beech tree will be planted in her memory. Mark your calendars for this rare and wonderful celebration.

Healing After Heartbreak  is a workshop series that will give you tools to process grief. The introductory session (open to all!) begins at 7pm on Tuesday, October 25. It will include an educational component and discussion. Questions? Please contact Gwyn Dugliss at griefhealing@saintjamesgi.net or 734-379-0907. This free program is open to the entire community. Spread the word.

New Mugs have been delivered to Saint James’ as a gift from CMAC Transportation and the extended Christie Family, who noticed our beige mugs were getting coffee stained and wanted to make a difference. Approved by vestry and the ECW, we love these new mugs! If you’d like one of your own ECW is selling them as a fundraiser for $5 each. Look for a sign-up sheet in Galloway Hall or across from the main office.

🎵 🎶 🎶🎵  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Choir season is up and running, and it’s never too late to join! We are doing some very exciting music this year, including some great standards by composers Ralph Vaughan Williams and John Rutter, exciting new pieces by composers Libby Larsen and Benjamin Wegner, and even a Bach Cantata in December, “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland” BWV 61, complete with soloists and orchestra! This is not a year you want to miss! Bell choir will also be doing some exciting work this year as well! Please let me know if you plan to attend! The St. James Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30PM, and the St. James Adult Choir rehearses Thursdays at 7:30PM. All are welcome!

Please consider joining in the music at St. James, we have lots of excellent programming this year. If you have reservations about joining that I can smooth over, or even just want to chat and learn some more about music, I’m always happy to talk! I’m easily reached at music@saintjamesgi.net.

This morning’s musical point of interest: Our anthem this morning is by renowned composer Ludwig van Beethoven, who aside from his well-known collections of string, piano, and orchestral music, composed a decent amount of literature for sacred chorus and organ. Beethoven is a well-known composer, and his ability to compose while deaf is of course legendary. However, here is some trivia you may be unaware of: 1) He composed a Sonatina for mandolin. Don’t listen, it’s terrible. 2) Upon hearing a young Beethoven, Mozart said “Keep your eyes on him—someday he’ll give the world something to talk about.” 3) His 3rd Symphony was originally dedicated to Napoleon. Upon hearing that Napoleon crowned himself emperor, he ripped the dedication off the manuscript. 4) Beethoven suffered from bipolar disorder. 5) Beethoven’s coffee had to have exactly 60 beans, and he would even go so far as to inspect the workers at the coffee shops he frequented. 6) Beethoven’s favorite food was macaroni and cheese!

Stay tuned for upcoming music events in the area:

Oct. 19-22: Bowling Green State University’s New Music Festival, featuring composer Dai Fujikura and the Spektral Quartet. Details at festival.bgsu.edu.

Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7:30PM: Minister of Music Robert Ragoonanan in a piano recital performing the music of David Guion, Henri Dutilleux, and Franz Schubert.
