A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net Sylvia lighting candles. |
This Sunday we celebrate Sylvia’s last Sunday with us. As part of her priestly discernment our own Sylvia Booth is entering Seminary this fall at Bexley-Seabury Seminary in Chicago. In her words, “I have been loved, nurtured and supported in the first steps of my discernment process by St James. I am grateful to the whole Saint James community for showing me Christ´s love in action and helping to send me out to continue carrying the Good News.” As a seminarian Sylvia will serve at Saint Michael´s and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lincoln Park as a multicultural and multilingual ministry setting.
Bobby’s Music Series 2017-2018 programs begin this Saturday, August 19 and promise to be the monthly social events of our church’s sesquicentennial year. Plan on coming to Saint James to find a seat by 7:30 PM for the first in the series, The Music of Robert and Clara Schumann. A day later, on Sunday evening, August 20 at 6:00 PM, you are invited to attend a Sing, Sing A Song Song Service and sing not one, but a number of “songs” that are accompanied by Bobby in the Hickory Island Pavilion at 29820 East River Road, Grosse Ile. Although Song Service will not be the social event of August, Bobby’s will, I hope you will still come “sing, sing a song” with me and then afterward enjoy some light refreshments and conversation. Walk the Path: August 19th 11am-2pm at Macomb Commons (corner of Macomb and Meridian). Wayne State’s Third Annual fundraising bike campaign. Free lemonade and hotdogs will be provided, and Barry Van Engelen will be playing music!
Planting Flowers and Bushes Landscaping help is needed on Saturday morning, August 26. Meet at the church at 8:30 am. We’ll drive to 29856 Bayview on the island where we will remove 15-20 lovely donated shrubs and flowers for planting at Saint James. Bring work gloves and boots if you have them, also a shovel and a truck if you own one. Could anyone help by making a simple lunch in the kitchen? Maybe pasta or hotdogs? Many hands make light work — and many people make fun work! Thanks in advance for your help.
A Church Picnic is planned for Sunday, September 10, following our outdoor ChurchFEST Sunday Service. We’ll have a bouncy house for the kids. Also hotdogs, hamburgers, and condiments will be provided by a generous gift. So bring a side dish to share and maybe a friend. It will be a wonderful day of celebration. If you can help set up chairs please come at 9am.
Lisette’s Canadian Life, Tuesday, Sept. 5, is the first in our 150th Anniversary Red Doors Chapel Series. Meet at Saint James at 10am to head out and discover what was life like for Lisette after she escaped to Canada? Historic sites in Sandwich, Amhertsburg, and Essex, Ontario will be visited, with lunch along the way.

A 150th Anniversary Golf Classic to benefit our Saint James chapel will be held on Tuesday, September 19th at the Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club. This is a great chance to dust off the clubs and enjoy the emerald greens of Grosse Ile with friends and family to support a great cause. Dinner-only tickets are also available.
Visiting the Sick and Homebound The Pastoral Care Team and anyone interested in joining the team will meet on Wednesday, August 23, at 6:30pm in the library. We will look at who is visiting whom, we’ll get a refresher from Fr. Phil on administering home communion, we’ll discuss opportunities to develop this ministry, and we’ll pray for those in need.
The Chapel Vestibule needs to be kept clear for fire-safety and historical reasons. If you have anything stored in the vestibule (the entry-space between the fine doors of the chapel narthex and the outside doors), the deadline for removing things is September 1. Thank you for your help. –The St. James Vestry
What will you be wearing to church on Sunday, September 3? Tradition has that after Labor Day we don’t wear white or seersucker. On Sunday, September 3 I invite you to come to church dressed for style or just for fun in white or seersucker. If you don’t have either white or seersucker in your closet, you might find end of summer clearance sales at area department stores or in your favorite Salvation Army or Goodwill thrift stores. David Hartwell

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL—2017
70+ children attended from pre-school through 5th grades. It was a glorious week of music, bible learning, science, crafts, games and of course the famous cornbread. Thanks to all who contributed to create this memorable week for kids! “It takes a village” and indeed it took a village of St. Jamers to execute Vacation Bible School 2017.

PSSST…..Did you know that the very first Saint James’ Rummage Sale was held in May 1960? The tradition of our semi-annual rummage sale is 57 years old! Sale proceeds enable St. James to support approximately 17 different charitable organizations. Folks from not only St. James, but from all over the downriver area volunteer whatever time they can spare to help with set-up, work week, sale days and clean up. Does it sound like a lot of work? It is, but every year I am amazed at how many people donate not only their rummage, but their time to assist in any way they can. If you work full time, please consider helping with set-up (the weekend before the sale) or Saturday’s sale day and clean-up afterwards. Hot lunches are provided at no cost to all the volunteers during the work week and on sale days. The food is awesome but the fellowship and friendships that are created between each other are priceless!! Sales happen every year on the first Saturday of May (and the preceding Friday) and the first Saturday of October (and the preceding Friday). If you have any questions about our Spring or Fall Sales, please contact either Sharon Metz (cell 734-626-1650) or Carole Vandenberg. Our next sale will be October 5 (9am-4pm) and October 6 (9am-Noon).

🎵 🎶 🎶🎵 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
Choir and bell choir is starting up again very soon! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.
Choir and Bell Choir will begin meeting again on Thursday, September 7th.
This morning’s musical point of interest: We hear 2 pieces by the great master J.S. Bach today. The prelude this morning is originally a Vivaldi Violin Concerto that Bach arranged for organ. The 2nd piece at communion is an incredible little work with extreme chromaticism that really shows off Bach’s compositional ability. The piece starts and ends in C Major, but in between we visit some very distant key areas that would normally be quite unexpected.
Upcoming Music Events
September 16, 7:30: Join us in Galloway Hall for Short Pieces by Great Composers: A Piano Recital by Minister of Music Robert Ragoonanan. Featuring Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Bartok’s 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs, C.P.E. Bach’s Fantasia in F-sharp Minor, and Brahms’ Klavierstücke Op. 118.
