A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to good news@saintjamesgi.net

A group of 9 parishioners gather to celebrate the induction of our benefactor, Elizabeth Denison Forth, into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame.

WELCOMED IN HOLY BAPTISM Today we mark Jenavieve Morrison, Shannon Miller, Mason Gardiner, TJ Tabarez and Logan Swift in baptism. Welcome and Congratulations!

Greens Market   If you have Holly, Boxwood or Juniper bushes which need pruning, please hold off until the week before Greens Market work week so it will be fresh for us to use on special arrangements.

Help Wire Cones and Berries in preparation for our Green’s Market. We’ll gather on the next two Wednesdays at 11AM. Come for the service at 10:15, too, if you like. If you don’t know how to wire, there will be people there to help you! Bring your lunch. Join us for fun and camaraderie!

An Altar Guild Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, November 19, following the 10:00 am service. Fr Phil is going to talk to us about some changes we have made.

The Thanks+Giving Fun Run is planned for Thursday November 23. This is our 4th Annual outing! A Kids Dash starts at 8:30 am, and the 5K run/walk starts at 9 a.m. Entry fees are free-will donations to support local families through Saint James’ ministries ,the Sacred Heart Food Pantry, and the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen.  All donations are tax deductible.   Register online at www.Saintjamesgi.net

The “Thanksgiving Meal” at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen will be prepared and served by Sacred Heart. Saint James will have the day off on that day, November 18. , so we will not need to volunteer turkeys this time! Our next turn to cook and serve will be Sat, Dec. 16th, for the “Christmas Meal”. We will do the day alone so Sacred Heart can have the day off. We will serve baked ham and lots of sides. Patricia Saavedra and her mom, Janet, have already made many pumpkin rolls for the desserts!  Our youth groups are also making candy Poppers for our guests!  The sign-up sheets for volunteers to cook, prep and serve the “Christmas Meal” are already posted on the Outreach/Soup Kitchen bulletin board in the hallway.  Thank you for all you can do.  If you have any questions please call. Sincerely, Amy Kohair 34-693-0694 & Frank Kohair 734-693-5904

STEWARDSHIP 2018   Our Stewardship Program for 2018 Begins today, Oct 29. There will be many additional opportunities to give during the lengthy celebration of our 150th birthday.  However, for sure the bills must be paid. Please remember that when filling out your pledge card for 2018. If you haven’t pledged in the past, won’t you please consider starting for 2018? Curt Crysler, treasurer

On Diocesan Convention  The 183rd Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan was held in Novi this past weekend.  In attendance representing St. James were Fr. Phil as our rector, Kim Faistenhammer, Jim Holubka and Wendy Kiblawi serving as lay delegates, and Amanda Phillips and MaryLou Cartwright serving as volunteers.

The convention was well attended with over 400 Episcopalians from southeastern Michigan.

One of the pre-convention workshops offered was called “The Road to Emmaus:  Storytelling for Diversity and Inclusion presented by Rev. Vicki Hesse, the new head of the Whitaker Institute.  We learned how to share each other’s stories by taking turns as the teller, listener and observer, thereby changing our perspectives.

We enjoyed an evening Eucharist with a thought provoking sermon by the Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas, who has written a number of well-received books about inclusion and diversity.

The business portion of the convention entailed voting for candidates running for diocesan office and discussing, amending and voting on resolutions.  There were presentations throughout the weekend based on the convention topic “Waters of Reconciliation; Turning again to Christ.” Particularly meaningful was the update on the Youth and Young Adult Ministries.

Convention is a good way to learn more about the workings of our denomination outside of our own parish. Consider attending next year!  As we like to say — “The Episcopal Church Welcomes You.”

Thank You!!   A huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped with the Spirit of Hope, Soup Kitchen Meal on Saturday, Oct. 21st!  We did the meal alone, cooking and serving.   David & Judy Christie donated the 30 pounds of hamburger needed for the meal!  Our menu consisted of a hearty vegetable-beef stew served over mashed potatoes.  Apple sauce with cinnamon-sugar, dinner rolls with butter, and carrot cake for dessert rounded out the meal!  Sacred Heart sent drink boxes, chips and cookies for an extra treat.  Peanut butter & Jelly sandwiches were made so the people had a bite to eat for later.  The total cost for the meal and security was $336.26 to feed 120 people.  Our wonderful crew who came to help us with the cooking and serving were: Ron Martinez, Beth Holiday & Paul Primeau, Kathy Toth, Sharon & Phil Metz, Diane Larkin, Kristin & Mitch Lewis, Lynda & Barry VanEngelen, Mike Callahan, Dave & Kate Hartwell, Dave Rudzienski, Erica &Little Henry Benson, and Cathy &John Bishop!  These are amazing people who make the well-oiled machine work!

🎵 🎶 🎶🎵  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Choir and bell choir is up and running! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.

This morning’s musical point of interest: The prelude this morning includes 2 of Brahms’ final compositions before his death, and are stirring settings of stirring texts. We also hear an example in the choir this morning of an example of early Renaissance polyphony. Fox sets the text in a sort of extended Anglican chant, and writes for antiphonal choirs, creating a call and response effect.

Upcoming Music Events

Nov. 18, 7:30pm: Join us in Galloway Hall as international composer and flautist Hong-Da Chin performs music on both Western and Chinese flutes, in what is sure to be a riveting display of music from around the world!
