“Great Figures of the New Testament” is the topic of the Thursday afternoon book group, which meets in the Library at 1:30 p.m. In each meeting we will watch a 30-minute video by the excellent Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, a Jewish New Testament scholar who teaches at Vanderbilt University. Levine brings a Jewish perspective to scriptures written largely by Jewish persons in a Jewish context. Come hear about Mary Magdalene, Elizabeth, John the Baptist, Pontius Pilate, King Herod and more. In all, 24 persons will be discussed. Meetings begin and end with meditative prayer. After each video Fr. Phil will lead a discussion. Please drop in and join the fun.
An Inquirer’s Class is planned for three Wednesday nights in January – January 10, 17, & 24. We’ll talk about what the Episcopal Church believes, answer questions that you may have, give a tour of the Church building, and generally provide a good opportunity for learning more about Saint James. The class will run from 7:15 to 8:30pm. All new members, existing members and inquirers are welcome! Speak to Fr. Phil to find out more.
“Get to Know Your Muslim Neighbor” is a Muslim-led outreach program including food, presentations, Q & A, posters, hands-on exhibits, and conversation. Look for the announcement in the “Articles” section below! (Sat, Jan 20, 11a-3p.)
Vestry? Our church’s Annual Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 28th. At this meeting we will elect 4 persons to help guide the ministries and vision of our church. Vestry persons serve on a 12-person body that takes council to help lead the church. Vestry involves monthly meetings and occasional retreats. Please pray about whether you feel called to this leadership role at Saint James.
Acolyte Training for new and current acolytes will be held on January 21 following the 10am service. We are looking to expand the acolyte team. Particularly, youth’s in 3rd grade through high school who would like 1) the opportunity to serve 2) be a part of great tradition passed down from the older acolytes 3) have a different perspective of the worship service and 4) it is super cool to carry a candle or a cross. The time commitment one can expect, ideally, would be one Sunday a month to every 6 weeks depending on the size of our group. And involves simply showing up 15 minutes before the 10am service starts.
History Fair Weekend – SAVE THE DATE Saturday, February 3 @ 7:00PM – stories about the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln, in the mid 1800’s about the time Elizabeth Dennison Forth left her life savings so that Saint James Chapel could be built. Dessert reception follows. Sunday, February 4 immediately following the 10:00 service – Festivities include history walk with displays, skits, treasure hunt, prizes and a hearty hot breakfast. ALPHA is a program that studies the most basic, essential and extraordinary elements of the Christian Faith. Why do we think Jesus died for our sins? Who is the Holy Spirit? What does it mean to live as a Christian? Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Grosse Ile has a team of lay people leading two Alpha series, one on Saturday mornings at 10AM beginning February 24, and one on Wednesday evenings at 6:30PM beginning February 21. UTO boxes are still available on the table outside of the office or in Galloway hall. Please feel free to pick up a second box, if already collecting, or a new one to start the year with. The next ingathering of boxes will take place in the spring. Envelopes will be available also for those who prefer to donate in that way. Thank you!
A Great Way To Get Involved at Saint James is hosting coffee & conversation following the service. To continue meeting and greeting each other at coffee hour volunteers are needed to make the coffee, serve and clean up. Coffee, tea, sugar, and creamer are all supplied, but you may bring a simple snack, such as store bought cookies, donuts, or a veggie platter. It does not need to be an elaborate spread. If you are not able to host a coffee hour, you may be interested in bringing some cookies that could be saved and served as needed.
Prayer at Communion is available every Sunday at the 10AM service. Prayer Team members stand at either side of the altar rail. After you receive the bread and wine, engage a prayer team member and ask for prayer of any kind, which they will offer on your behalf. Prayer requests are confidential.
A Sunday Morning Bible Study runs between services every week from 9:05 to 9:50 AM in the Fireplace Room. Led by Fr. Phil with lots of space for discussion, this open study is a great for increasing knowledge and faith.

Open Office Hours Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello!

“Just Because . . .” Program The colorful envelopes located in the church vestibule are there for that special time when you just want to give a little extra to the church. Choose an envelope by number and put that much into the envelope. Certain numbers are even associated with prizes!
OUT THERE WITH OUTREACH: Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen
Our last turn at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen was on Saturday, December 16, 2017. We did the meal & serving alone. It was a very successful “Christmas Meal”!
The January 20, 2018 meal will be prepared and served by our partners: Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Grosse Ile.
The February 17, 2018 meal will be prepared and served by the Detroit Moose Hockey Team, under the leadership of Derek Fowler.
We, Saint James, will have those two days off.
Our next turn to prepare and serve the meal at Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen, will be on Saint Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17, 2018! Saint James will do the day alone. The first shift (Cooking & set-up crew) will meet in our Chapel Parking lot at 8:20 a.m. to load up the supplies and to carpool Downtown. The first shift will be on their way home by 11:00. The second shift (Serving & clean-up crew) needs to be at Spirit of Hope, on the corner of Trumbul and Martin Luther King Blvd, by or before 11:30. You
will be on your way home by 1:30 p.m.

“Get To Know Your Muslim Neighbor” is a drop-in program running from 11am-3pm on Saturday January 20th. Everyone is welcome! “Get to Know Your Muslim Neighbor” is a family friendly opportunity to make connections and ask questions. We will have an exhibit with posters talking about Muslim History in the US, starting from the Revolution through the Civil War. We will have posters about basic Islamic information such as: Who is Allah? How do Muslims worship? Women in Islam, What is a Hijab? and more.
There will also be hands-on activities for kids including: Exploring Calligraphy, Art in the Islamic World, coloring pages, and a “Try On a Hijab” for ladies as well as Henna.
We will provide coffee, cookies, Samosa, International Delicacies and so on. At 12:30 our presenters will give a 15-20 minute presentation called: The Forgotten History of Muslims in America. This will be a great way to break barriers and get a better understanding of a faith tradition that is still new to many of us. We hope you can come!
(Note, a second “Get to Know Your Muslim Neighbor” program will be hosted by the ECW in February on a Monday Evening. It will have fewer of the “extras,” will be hosted by other presenters, and will have more of a presentation. Attend both to learn as much as possible.)

This morning’s musical point of interest: : 10:00 folks, listen closely to the Pachelbel ricercar! He starts with a very chromatic subject, and this subject pervades the movement. Sometimes he writes it as you first hear it, sometimes backwards, at other times faster or slower! Halfway through the piece, a 2nd subject is introduced, and these two themes are expertly woven together near the end!

Choir and bell choir is up and running! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays
