President Lincoln Program – Saturday, February 3, at 7PM. Come hear all about Abraham Lincoln’s life and legacy in the chapel tonight at 7PM. The Civil War period was the time in Lisette Denison Forth’s life when she changed her will to include that famous intention that a chapel would be built with her life savings where people of all sorts and conditions could worship side by side.

HISTORY FAIR and BRUNCH this SUNDAY – Sunday, February 4, 2018 immediately following the 10:00 service – Join us for a fun celebration of our church’s 150th anniversary.  Fun exhibits, videos, old photos, treasure hunt.  Prizes will be given and a great lunch will be served. We need to know approximately how many of you time travelers to prepare lunch for so please sign up today just outside the church door. Questions?? Text Kate Hartwell 313 318 3275

Capital Campaign Packets are available on the resource table across from the main office. If you did not receive a packet in the mail you may not be on our mailing list. Please contact the office at 734-676-1727 or office@saintjamesgi.net to ensure that you receive all mailings.   Safe Passages” is the title of a program to be shown this Monday February 5 in Galloway Hall that follows the children of the Guatemala City Trash Dump, exploring their stories and their needs. Come at 6pm for a potluck meal. The program will be shown while the meal is in progress.

Coffee And Tea Orders  are due by noon on Monday, February 5.  Visit the CoffeeAM website www.coffeeam.com and search for your favorite coffees and/or teas.  Prices for club members are less than the retail prices shown.  Let David Hartwell know what you would like to order by emailing dhartwell4@yahoo.com or calling 313 318-9009 by noon on February 5 and then pick it up and pay for it on Sunday, February 11.  It doesn’t get any easier than that!

Commitment Sunday is next Sunday, February 11. Please bring your filled out Capital Campaign pledge cards to the service next week to be counted and blessed. It is very important that everyone participate in this effort to heal and renew our chapel, building, and grounds. This facility gives us so much; this is our chance to give back to the facility. Make a gift for today and for generations to come.

An Online Capital Campaign Pledge Card will be available on our website after February 4th at: saintjamesgi.net/cc150

Scouts in the Congregation?  If you see a girl scout, cub scout, or boy scout in the congregation this morning, please take a moment to greet and encourage them.

Tuesday, February 13 promises to be quite the event filled day.  At 9:15 AM the coffee and tea club will head out from Saint James on a road trip to Monroe to visit Agua Dulce coffee and tea shop, Trinity Episcopal Church, and then Public House Food + Drink for lunch.  Blue Heron Trading Company in Flat Rock will be the last stop on our road trip before returning to Saint James.  Then, at 6:00 PM there is the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper.

Now accepting new coffee and tea club members!  Pick up your copy of the annual report and read all about the club on page 11.  Think about joining us on our road trip to Monroe on Tuesday, February 13 at 9:15 AM.  It promises to be quite the day.

The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is an extravaganza of chocolate, sugar and friends! Scheduled for February 13 at 6:00 PM in Galloway Hall, get in one last Hurrah before the start of Lent!

Ash Wednesday services will be held in our chapel on Wednesday, February 14, at 6:15AM, 10:15AM, and 7:00PM. These services are a great way to mark a holy beginning of Lent.

Ashes To Go: On Ash Wednesday Fr. Phil will be available in the front parking lot from 10AM-noon and from 4:30 to 6:30PM to distribute ashes and a prayer to those who cannot make our regular services. Spread the word.

“SAINT PAUL And The Founding of Christianity” is the title of this year’s Lenten Potluck/Program. Beginning Wednesday, February 21. Was St. Paul the real founder of Christianity as some people say? What did he know and believe about Jesus Christ? What can we learn from his letters to help us live as 21st Century Christians? Come and see. Programs begin at 7:15PM, with Evening Prayer at 6:30PM and a potluck dinner beginning at 6:45PM.

“Great Figures of the New Testament” is the topic of the Thursday afternoon discussion group. We meet in the Library at 1:30 p.m. to watch a 30 minute presentation on a great New Testament figure and then discuss. All are welcome.

“Just Because” Envelopes   The colorful envelopes located in the church vestibule are there for that special time when you just want to give a little extra to the church.  Choose an envelope by number and put that much into the envelope. Certain numbers are even associated with prizes!

Prayer at Communion is available every Sunday at the 10AM service. Prayer Team members stand at either side of the altar rail. After you receive the bread and wine, engage a prayer team member and ask for prayer of any kind, which they will offer on your behalf. Prayer requests are confidential.

A Sunday Morning Bible Study runs between services every week from 9:05 to 9:50 AM in the Fireplace Room. Led by Fr. Phil with lots of space for discussion, this open study is a great for increasing knowledge and faith.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello.

Annual Meeting Wrap-up

At last week’s Annual Meeting we enjoyed a great potluck coordinated by Lynda VanEngelen who provided tasty sandwich rolls and quiche.

The meeting began with a recognition of Collie Hooper-Yan and Harold Schwochow as this year’s recipients of the “Alice Award,” as people who quietly see what needs to be done and do it.

We honored outgoing vestry, Jeff Faistenhammer, Marie Johnson, Mark McPherson, and Lynda VanEngelen for their excellent work and elected new vestry members: Tom Benson, Laurent Chappuis, Kim Faistenhammer, and Blanche Hutchison. Jeff Faistenhammer was appointed to complete the final two years of an unexpired term. Having been Jr. Warden for Building and Grounds and with much experience with the Capital Campaign projects Jeff was a natural choice to continue our Buildings and Grounds maintenance and development work.

We elected to Diocesan Convention Jim Holubka, Wendy Kiblawi, and Mandy Phillips, and alternates Blanche Hutchison and MaryLou Cartwright.

We passed a budget with a deficit of $25,000 after much discussion. In the past we have often passed deficit budgets and have always found a way to meet the budget at the end of the year, either from unexpectedly generous giving, less than expected spending, careful use of specially designated funds, or a combination of all three. Our Treasurer informed us that the Crowley Fund for Capital Improvements will be less needed this year because of the Capital Campaign, which is also for Capital Improvements. Therefore the parish voted to use the Crowley Fund as a General Fund backup if necessary.

It was a great joy to be together last week to take council for the mission and ministry of the church. Here’s to a healthy and enriching 2018!

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

This morning’s musical point of interest: : The choir’s anthem this morning at 10:00 is arranged by a very famous Gospel musician, Bill Gaither from Indiana, who has many credits to his name. Check him out! Our postlude this morning is a rollicking fugue by Pachelbel. Listen to how artfully he weaves the opening subject throughout the work!

Upcoming Music Events:

(Notice a change in Date!)

Febuary 24, 7:30PM: Come and hear Piano Trio music with Yi Chieh Anita Chiu, Violin, Jon Moody, Cello, and Robert Ragoonanan, Piano in Galloway Hall! Featuring works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Cécile Chaminade.

Choir and bell choir is up and running! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses
