Soup Day turns 25 this year; taste fest set for March 7

Hundreds of soup fans and connoisseurs will return to the Holiday Inn Southgate Banquet & Conference Center on March 7 for the 25th annual Soup Day.  The event, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., serves as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army’s Downriver food pantry.  Similar to previous years, it’ll cost attendees $10 to purchase a spoon to taste some of the best and rarest soups in the area — including dessert soups, like cheesecake and s’mores. All proceeds go directly to the Salvation Army’s Meal Share Program.

“This is our big year,” said Dianne Woodruff, who has helped organize the event for the last five years with the Downriver Salvation Army Advisory Council. “We’re calling it our silver anniversary.”

Each year, soup tasters vote for the best soup, the best display and the most unique soup.  This year, the best soup winners will receive a special silver spoon plaque commemorating their win, according to a letter signed by Capt. Brian Reed of the Salvation Army Corps/Community Center in Wyandotte.

“Your donations of soup and/or chili for this annual event go a long way in helping our less fortunate neighbors and friends in the Downriver area,” Reed wrote.

Last year, the event raised more than $5,000 for the Salvation Army with over 500 attendees. There’s been years in the past where up to 800 people attended, Woodruff said.

“It’s always been well-received and well-attended,” she said. “People look forward to it every year. They get there early and stand in line to get theirs spoons.”

Soup Day started in 1993 as a smaller event, but with the same purpose. For its first nine years, the event was held by The News-Herald in the atrium of its Southgate offices at One Heritage Place. In 2003, Soup Day outgrew its digs and took on a new home at the Holiday Inn Southgate, the event’s other co-sponsor ever since. It became an event open to the public the same year.  Woodruff said people sometimes show up an hour early to stand in line because they know they’re doing something helpful while enjoying the event.

Don’t forget to read the “Let them eat soup.” announcement in this issue of The Good News Weekly for your invitation to “break bread” with other Saint James members on Soup Day.

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Choir and bell choir is up and running! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.

This morning’s musical point of interest: : This morning we hear some less common Baroque music. Our prelude this morning is a passionate Passacaglia by Buxtehude. Notice how the pedal part remains the same throughout the piece, and the manuals provide the variety. The choir is singing a beautiful Renaissance hymn by Farrant, and at 10:00 communion we here 3 Lent-oriented chorale preludes by Pachelbel.

Upcoming Music Events:

March 17, 7:30PM: Come and hear the BGSU Graduate String Quartet in the Chapel!
