Help Build the Float for Saint James’ 150th Anniversary entry in the Islandfest parade. The float party will be held at Beth & Paul Primeau’s home at 8750 Sunnybrook on Saturday, May 26 at 4PM. Bonfire to follow! For more information contact Beth at 734-673-3872 or Sherri Howes at 313-381-1488.

Parade Fun  Walk or ride in the Grosse Ile Islandfest parade on Saturday, June 2. Meet at the High School at 9:30am. We will hand out candy and flyers and accompany the 150th Anniversary Float. Call Beth Primeau at 734-63-3872 or Sherri Howes at 313-381-1488 for info.

Help Choose the Next Bishop for our diocese by participating in the last of the  “listening sessions” held by the Search and Nomination Committee, on Sat, June 2, 9-11:30am, at St. Paul’s Cathedral.  In this session you will be given several ways to articulate the needs you see in the church and the world––needs you believe our next bishop must be equipped to address.

Graduate Recognition Sunday will be June 3, 2018 at the 10:00 service. If you are graduating High School, or any other course of study, please let the office know.  There will be a special breakfast in your honor after the service is over.

Many Thanks  Pat Zavadil wants to thank everyone so much for the more than 60 cards she received for her birthday.  It means a great deal to her!

Our Annual Parish Boat Cruise on the Detroit River is scheduled for Saturday, June 16, beginning at 6:30pm. We leave from Bishop’s Park in Wyandotte. Children are free; adult tickets are $25/person. Tickets will be available after both services on Sunday May 27, June 3, and June 10.  We will accept cash, checks & credit card.  Tickets are also available in the office.

We move to the Chapel for Sunday 10am services beginning on June 10th.

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed   Can you take a turn volunteering in the kitchen during coffee hour?  You would make the coffee and tea, bring a simple snack (cookies) and cleanup.  Coffee, tea, sugar, creamer, napkins/plates are provided. It is a great way to get involved at St. James.  Ask someone to help you.  There is a signup sheet on the table in Galloway Hall.  Joan Hemsworth is available to show you the ropes.

Great Figures of the New Testament is the topic of the Thursday afternoon discussion group. We meet in the Library at 1:30 p.m. to watch a 30 minute video and then discuss. All are welcome.

Capital Campaign pledge cards are online at saintjamesgi.net/cc150 and on the resource table. Work begins this Spring!

A Sunday Morning Bible Study runs between services every week from 9:05 to 9:50 AM in the Fireplace Room. Led by Fr. Phil, with lots of space for discussion, this open study is a great for increasing knowledge and faith. Drop in!

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask!

Prayer at Communion is available every Sunday at the 10AM service. Prayer Team members stand at either side of the altar rail. After you receive the bread and wine, engage a prayer team member and ask for prayer of any kind, which they will offer on your behalf. Prayer requests are confidential.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tues-Thurs 9-2, &  Fri 9-noon.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Choir and bell choir is up and running! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.

This morning’s musical point of interest  This morning we hear an extraordinaryprelude by Buxtehude, who was Bach’s greatest influence. Buxtehude takes a once-common hymn tune which was often sung with the Lord’s prayer and creates four majestic variations for the congregation to enjoy. The anthem at 10:00 was composed by my dear friend and colleague, Ben Wegner, who conducts several choirs in Iowa and is an up-and-coming composer, having already had several performances of his works by major choral ensembles.

Upcoming Music Events:

Summer Music Listening Classes begin in June. These classes last about an hour, during which we will talk about a significant composer of church music and listen to one or more major works. In June, classes will be:

June 7, 7:30pm: Lili Boulanger (1893-1918) and her setting of Psalm 130.

June 14, 7:30pm: W.A. Mozart (1756-91) and the “Great” Mass in C Minor, K427.
