A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Anya Victoria Crysler was born to Adam and Oxana Crysler this week, granddaughter of Nancy and Curt. Congratulations, one and all! (When there’s a birth in the family, call the office and we’ll put a rose on the altar.)

This Morning We Thank Kate Hartwell for speaking to the 10AM service about our founding and highlights of our history!

Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social this Sunday,  immediately following the 10:00 service. Plenty of Ice cream with all the fixings for sundaes, and sweet treats –  Ice cold lemonade and coffee or tea to drink. Bring a blanket or chairs, and a lawn game or two if you have one. If you have time a plate of your favorite cookies or sweet treat to share would be special. Bring the whole family, your friends and neighbors – all are welcome.  Come casual and comfortable (church too).

150th Anniversary Weekend  A Celebration BBQ is planned for Saturday, July 14th on the front lawn; bring a potluck side and enjoy music on the river. Our Celebration Worship Service is planned for Sunday, July 15 at 10AM; invite friends, family, and neighbors to these special events!

One Service of Worship will be held on Sunday, July 15th at 10AM. Our bishop will be our presider for this special 150th Anniversary Event and The Rev. Dr. Shannon MacVean-Brown will be our guest preacher. Canon of Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis, Shannon began her ministry in the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, where she most recently served as Rector of St. Matthew’s and St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Detroit, where she led her congregation to start a community development organization, she worked with an interfaith group to open a client-choice food pantry that was a collaboration between several churches and nonprofit organizations, and led her parish to become a vital presence in the transformation of the neighborhood around them.

New Bishop Survey! Help choose the next bishop of the diocese by registering your hopes and concerns. An all-diocese survey has been released by the Bishop Search and Nomination Committee:  tinyurl.com/mi-bishopsurvey

Pull-ing for Lindsay   One of our island children Lindsay Labadie was found with a racquetball sized tumor in her brain. With one surgery down and many needed to go, we need to have a fundraiser to help her and her family with the costs. On June 28 from 6 PM to 9 PM at Elba-Mar boat club there will be a, donate per plate, Pig Roast and  Fish Fry. If you cannot make it but still wish to donate go to: www.gofundme.com  Thank you, Diane Mammo

A Memorial Service for Pat Williamson will be held this afternoon, Sunday, June 24, at 1PM in our main sanctuary. Please keep Pat’s family & friends in your prayers.

Capital Campaign projects have begun. If you haven’t yet pledged, you can pledge on line at saintjamesgi.net/cc150 . Thank you for pitching in.

Free 8×10 Family Photos  Get ready to sign up for your 15 minute photo session with LifeTouch, the professional church directory company. For many people, their church directory photo is the best formal family photo they have. Watch this space for information on how to sign up online.

Register for VBS online at www.saintjamesgi.net. Vacation Bible School is a free week-long day camp open to all members of Saint James, residents of the Island, and friends. Children from 3 years old to 5th grade participate in all activities, while older youth get to serve as helpers and leaders. All are welcome! Adults, we need your help too. Please speak to Nancy Crysler, our children’s ministries coordinator, if you are available to help. August 13-17, 9-11:30am.

Prayer Ministry This Summer  will continue in the Chapel. They will be standing by the red entry doors to the front parking lot in the back of the chapel. If you would like to have prayer during communion, please feel free to see the prayer minister at that time. Due to the confines of the Chapel there will only be one prayer team member present each Sunday

Save the Float  We are in need of a place to store our beautiful Island chapel float to be used in future years. Please let us know if you have a pole barn or storage area that could help.

The Next Soup Kitchen Will Be July 21st  Sign-ups will be on the Soup Kitchen bulletin board in the hallway between the Sunday School room and the Choir room.  Our Prep Crew will meet in our Chapel parking lot at 8:20am to load up they cars and head out. Servers should be at Spirit of Hope by 11:30am.  We will all be on our way home, or out to lunch, by 1:40pm.  The August 18th meal will be prepared and served by the Detroit Moose Hockey Team, so we will have it off.

Open Bible Study  A drop-in Bible Study runs every Sunday morning from 9:05-9:50AM in the Fireplace Room. The study requires no preparation, and you can come on whatever Sundays are convenient for you. Drop in any time!

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed   Can you take a turn volunteering in the kitchen during coffee hour? You would make the coffee and tea, bring a simple snack and cleanup. Coffee, tea, sugar, creamer, napkins/plates are provided. It is a great way to get involved at St. James. Ask someone to help you. There is a signup sheet on the table in Galloway Hall. Joan Hemsworth is available to show you the ropes.

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Prayer at Communion is available every Sunday at the 10AM service. Prayer Team members stand at either side of the altar rail. After you receive the bread and wine, engage a prayer team member and ask for prayer of any kind, which they will offer on your behalf. Prayer requests are confidential.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tues-Thurs 9-2, &  Fri 9-noon.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello.

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Music Notes:  Organ music heard in today’s service is all by composers who were alive and working during (or just before) the early days of our Chapel (circa 1870), whose music was well-known to those on both sides of the Atlantic. So, it’s possible that today’s tunes may have been heard by someone sitting in your pew 150 years ago! Early Detroit had many strong ethnic groups with French, German and English backgrounds, to name a few, all reflecting different liturgical styles. At least one pipe organ survives from the late 1860’s, in Old St. John’s church, a German-heritage protestant church on Gratiot near Eastern Market, and it is still in regular use.

More problematic is what kind of instrument may have been available here in our Chapel. It could have been what we now call a “pump organ” (also referred to as a “parlor organ” or “harmonium”). Those were very common after about 1850, and large models could play any music intended for pipe organs. At some time in the 20th Century the Chapel probably had an electronic organ, as evidenced by a what appears to be a loudspeaker opening over the Sacristy door.
Our present Chapel mechanical-action organ was built in the mid-1980’s by an Ohio builder, Charles Ruggles, in the style of 18th and early 19th-century organs.

Upcoming Music Events:

Summer Music Listening Classes begin in June. These classes last about an hour, during which we will talk about a significant composer of church music and listen to one or more major works. In June, classes will be:

July 19, 7:30pm: Ola Gjeilo (b. 1978) and the Sunrise Mass

July 26, 7:30pm: George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) and the Resurrection Oratorio
