Saturday Night Music Concert, Sept. 15, 7:30pm: Choosing Joy: Music for a Cancer Journey.  A piano recital by Jeff Manchur, reflecting upon the emotional journey with cancer that his wife experienced. Featuring works by Garrett Hope, Brahms, Barber, Beach, and Beethoven.

ECW’s Annual “Welcome back Luncheon” All the ladies of St. James are invited to a luncheon at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club at 12 noon on Sunday, September 16th. We will have a short meeting and then enjoy soup, salad, rolls, beverages and dessert. There is no charge for the lunch, but we ask you sign up no later than Sept. 9th.  Sign-up sheets are outside the Chapel and main church, so please join us for a pleasant, stress free lunch together. If you are a woman and attend St. James you are automatically an ECW member.

Our Music Minister, Bobby, is leaving at the end of September for a church of 800 in his home town. Please take the opportunity to thank Bobby for his great ministry among us. A letter from Fr. Phil and Bobby can be found on the resource table across from the office.

A Purse Is Being Collected for Bobby—a money gift to help him on his way. All gifts should be clearly marked, not only on the check but also on the envelope. Gifts can be made out to Saint James. They will be collected and given as a single gift of thanks from us all. The deadline to contribute is September 25.

The Grosse Ile BOAR’S HEAD FESTIVAL sign-ups are scheduled for Sunday, September 16, from 5pm-8pm at the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church on Horsemill & Parke Lane. Let us know your household wants to help with the amazing Christmas Pageant or to work on the production team. Big roles, small roles, speaking roles, singing roles, choir, hand bells, tech team, dress up parts, juggling, non-speaking parts, kids parts, makeup, costumes, support staff—all are needed and available for this early December, super-fun community production!

Sunday School  is for children up through 5th grade and begins this Sunday, September 16,  at the 10am service.  All children welcome.  Be prepared for a fun learning year!!  Any adult interested in teaching or assisting please contact Nancy Crysler.  The Registration link can be found on our website at saintjamegi.net

The Thursday Book Group begins meeting this week, September 13, at 1:30pm in the library. Our book will be “The Screwtape Letters” by C. S. Lewis, a classic with over 3,000 five-star ratings on Amazon. The humorous and satirical narrative follows a series of letters from an elderly and experienced fallen angel, “Uncle Screwtape,” to his inexperienced nephew “Wormwood,” with advice on how to misguide the human to whom he has been assigned. Filled with insights into human folly, we nevertheless watch as the human becomes a Christian, falls in love, and finds eternal salvation. We will read the first section of this text together aloud on Thursday. (it’s an easy read.) Copies of the second chapter will be distributed. By the third week we hope people will have their own copy of the text.

We Have Posted our open Minister of Music position with the American Guild of Organists, their local chapters, and the Association of Anglican Musicians. Please begin praying for the next person called into this important worship leadership role. Also, feel free to share word of this employment opportunity with any musicians you may know. The Position Description can be found at www.saintjamesgi.net/Downloads/MusicMinister.pdf

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Choir and bell choir has started up! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.

This morning’s musical point of interest: Today we hear lots of music from the great Belgian organist and pedagogue Flor Peeters. His music is very reminiscent of the Romantic period, even though he was a 20th century composer, but there are a few 20th century sonorities and registrations that make it into his work. The choir anthem at 10:00 is by Palestrina, a giant of the Renaissance period who composed hundreds of pieces of choral music for the church.
