Our Music Minister, Bobby, is heading off this week to Minnesota to begin a new position in his home town. Please take a moment to thank him for the excellent ministry he has done among us. A reception is planned for Bobby following the 10AM service this morning.
The Widow’s Mite Mark McPherson is presenting his play on the life and legacy of Lisette on Saturday, October 13th at 4p.m. The play will feature our own Blanche Hutchison as Lisette. It should be an amazing evening reliving the events that led to the building of our own St. James Chapel. Mark is asking if the ladies of St. James could be in charge of the refreshments for this event. There are sign up sheets outside the Chapel and the main Church. Please help to make this a memorable evening for our parishioners and the many guests that will be attending. Thanks for your help.
The World-Renowned New Testament scholar, Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, is coming to East Lansing this Wednesday, October 3rd to lead a day-long conference. A practicing Jew, Dr. Levine brings a Jewish perspective to what is essentially a Jewish story about Jesus Christ. The $97 admission includes four hour-long sessions with Dr. Levine, lunch, and an “Annotated Jewish New Testament Commentary” ($39 value) to take home and keep. Find out more and sign-up at EpiphaniesConference.com or ask Fr. Phil, who will be attending.
ECW Speaker Series – Oct. 8, 6pm , Guest Speaker Irene Miller, a Holocaust survivor, author, speaker, ad educator will take us on a survival journey little known or written about. Please bring a dish to pass for a potluck and listen to Irene’s message of tolerance and acceptance of diversity.
The Thursday Book Group meets at 1:30pm in the library. Our book is “The Screwtape Letters” by C. S. Lewis, a classic with over 3,000 five-star ratings on Amazon. The humorous and satirical narrative follows a series of letters from an elderly and experienced fallen angel, “Uncle Screwtape,” to his inexperienced nephew “Wormwood,” with advice on how to misguide the human to whom he has been assigned. Filled with insights into human folly, we nevertheless watch as the human becomes a Christian, falls in love, and finds eternal salvation. We will read the first section of this text together aloud on Thursday. (it’s an easy read.) Copies of the second chapter will be distributed. By the third week we hope people will have their own copy of the text.
We Have Posted our open Minister of Music position with the American Guild of Organists, their local chapters, and the Association of Anglican Musicians. 🎵 🎶 🎶 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
This morning’s musical point of interest: Today at 10:00 we hear one of Purcell’s larger choir anthems, Rejoice in the Lord, alway. Purcell is one of Great Britain’s most important composers, and the only truly notable Baroque composer from the island nation. He had an illustrious career as a composer and organist, working his way up to the organist position at Westminster Abbey by the age of 20. He became well-known during his time for his choral and keyboard works, but was largely forgotten after his death outside of the Anglican church until his music experienced a revival in the 20th century, thanks largely in part to the efforts of composer and pianist Benjamin Britten (1913-76.
Upcoming Music Events:
Nov. 10, 7:30pm: The Organ in the Sanctuary. A recital by Robert Ragoonanan featuring works by Willocks, Bach, Clérambault, and Franck.
