The Coffee and Tea Club at Saint James is no Starbucks — it is so much better!  LOL  The club continues to percolate with quality coffees from all over the world, and to steep with quality loose leaf teas, herbal teas, chai, flavored teas, bag teas, and tisanes.  An order is called in to CoffeeAM on the Monday after the first Sunday of every month, and club members pay wholesale prices, not the retail prices shown on the website — http://www.coffeeam.com.  If you or a friend are interested in joining the club let David Hartwell know — dhartwell4@yahoo.com — 313 318-9009.

Leadership During Sabbatical is provided by our lay leaders and local clergy. For general needs contact our secretary Colleen Herman at office@saintjamesgi.net or 734-676-1727. For parish leadership needs contact our Senior Warden Blanche Hutchison at bhutchison1@hotmail.com or 313-657-1726. For ministry needs contact our Minister of Music Jim Johnson at music@saintjamesgi.net or 734-788-4364. For emergency care contact the Rev. Shirley McWhorter at 734-934-0748, or the Rev. Lynda Carter at 734-308-1189. While Fr. Phil is on sabbatical he will not be available, but he returns Sunday, March 3.

“Jesus Was An Episcopalian” is the name of the book that the Thursday Afternoon book group will be studying for five weeks. You can find copies of the first week’s readings on the resource table across from the office. For those who plan to continue, please buy the book written by Chris Yaw. The always-open group meets on Thursdays at 1:30pm in the library.

The Pastoral Care Team will meet on Saturday March 09 at 10:00 AM in the Library.  This meeting is open to current members of the Pastoral Care Team and anyone who wants to learn more about the ministry of bringing the Eucharist to our homebound parishioners.  Please mark your schedule and watch for additional details as we get closer to this meeting.

Rummage Sale Notice – We cannot accept rummage items until after April 15.  Please do not leave anything before that date.  The GI Fire Department does not want us to store rummage for more than two weeks, and we also need access to our cabinets, tables and chairs.  The rummage sale is May 3 and May 4.

Open Bible Study  A drop-in Bible Study runs every Sunday morning from 9:05-9:50AM in the Fireplace Room. The study requires no preparation, and you can come on whatever Sundays are convenient for you. Drop in any time!

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, &  Fri 9-12.

SPIRIT OF HOPE;  OUT THERE WITH OUTREACH

On Saturday, January 19, 2019 Saint James made a hot and hearty hamburger/vegetable stew, served with mashed potatoes, sliced peaches, and dinner rolls to serve our guests at Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen.  Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches were made “to go”.  Our numbers were down (only 67 people were served). This was because, THANKS BE TO GOD, many emergency shelters were opened up for the homeless, due to the record breaking bitter cold weather across America.  Detroit area temperatures were down there with the worst.  The emergency shelters offered beds, food and a warm place to be, for the people.  The people who did make it to Spirit of Hope were truly thankful for the the meal they received.  The left overs were sealed up for those who would come to the food pantry there later in the week.  Nothing EVER goes to waste.  Our numbers have come to be lower in general due to the change in the neighborhood. It has become gentrified so we have been serving 90 to 75 people on the average now.  Those are still 75 to 90 hungry people.  Thanks to the hearty souls who came to help, we were not shorthanded.  Families: Kristin, Steve & Mitch Lewis, Patricia & Austin Saavedra, David & Jake Christie, Dave, Emma & Jenny Rudziensky and Barry & Lynda VanEngelen; were joined by Diane Larken, Josh Henrickson, and Paul Primeau.  Thank you so much dear friends. It was not easy to show up in that horrible cold, ice and snow driving only 10 miles per hour to make the trip!  BUT, show up you DID, with bells on!  No matter the weather, no matter how many, or how few, guests show up, God’s children still need to be fed, body and soul.  You each understand this and God loves you all.

The Soup Kitchen this coming Saturday, February 16th, will be taken care of by the Detroit Moose Hockey Team.

We and Sacred Heart will have the day off.

On Saturday March 16th, Sacred Heart will do the whole day at Spirit of Hope.  We will have the day off.

On Saturday April 20th we will do the whole day at Spirit of Hope.  This will be the Easter Meal with Easter Sunday actually being the next day!  Your help will be greatly appreciated!  Sign-up sheets for this special meal will be posted on the Soup Kitchen/Outreach bulletin board between the Sunday School room and the Choir practice room.  What a lovely way to thank Christ for His great love and sacrifice for us.

We ask your prayers for Dear Norm, He is the sextant and the person who has been in charge of security and so much more, at Spirit of Hope for many years.  He has also been in charge of the animals on their urban farm.  We always knew how much Norm was responsible for at Spirit of Hope but when someone is suddenly gone, who did so much without making a show of it, you realize exactly how important they were!  Norm is that person.  His health is taking a nose dive and it is not expected that he will be back on the job.  Please pray for Norm’s peace and comfort, and that he not feel pain.  Pray that he remembers God’s love for him as well as ours…  Thank you dear friends, always, with love, Amy & Frank Kohair
