A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Remembering Nancy Clark’s daughter, Anne, getting married in the chapel in Sept. 1988

Holy Week and Easter Services are right around the corner. Experience the Passion in all its fullness by participating in as many parts of the story as possible:

  • PALM SUNDAY IS NEXT WEEK: We begin in Galloway Hall at 8am and 10am to celebrate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Palms for all!
  • Holy Wednesday: Evening Prayer at 6:15pm. Pizza & a Jesus Movie at 6:40. (See announcement below.)
  • The Maundy Thursday Potluck Service celebrates Jesus’ last supper and arrest. We gather in Galloway Hall at 6:30pm.
  • Good Friday services begin at 1 pm in the chapel.
  • Holy Saturday Services begin in the chapel at 9am.
  • HOLY SATURDAY FOR KIDS is a special morning for children and families that includes an Easter Egg Hunt, a Craft, a telling of the Easter Story by Fr. Phil and a snack. Gather in Galloway Hall at 10:00AM. Please bring friends!
  • EASTER SUNDAY SERVICES: The Easter Vigil Sunrise Service begins in Galloway Hall at 7:30am. The Festival Eucharist Service begins at 10am in the main church, with full choir and Brass!

Flower and Music memorials and thanksgivings are being received through Palm Sunday. Turn in your gold sheets to the office with a donation of any amount.

Write A Meditation for our Good Friday Service This year the heart of Good Friday will be seven first-person accounts of the cross written and shared by parishioners. Please volunteer, as we need your help to make this work. You can choose between Judas, Pontius Pilate, Barabbas, Simon of Cyrene, the “good” thief on the cross, Mary the mother of Jesus, and Joseph of Arimathea. Meditations are written in the first person. For example: “My name is Judas. The events of today begin with me…” They can be  3-6 minutes long. Sign up on the sheet by the main office or talk to Fr. Phil for more information. The service begins at 1pm.

Women and Saudi Arabia  is the topic of our next ECW speaker program. On April 8 Lucy Dinwiddie will share her experience and reflections from working in Saudi Arabia for nearly two years. Middle Eastern dinner begins at 6:30pm. Speaker at 7pm.

How Is Jesus A Sacrifice That Takes Away Sin? is the title of Wednes-day’s Lenten Program, hosted by the Vestry. Evening Prayer begins in the chapel at 6:30PM. The potluck begins at 6:45. The Program begins at 7:15. For the potluck please bring your own table setting and a dish to share.

United Thank Offering ingathering Today 100% of the collection is used to provide grants to people in need from our diocese, our nation and around the world. For your convenience, envelopes have been included in the bulletin. Checks can be made out to “St. James ECW” with UTO in the memo line. Thank you in advance.  A list of current grant recipients can be found at the website below. Wendy K. 248-476-0265 https://www.episcopalchurch.org/files/uto_2018_grants_brochure.pdf

The Annual EASTER EGG HUNT Breakfast for children will be held on the Saturday  before Easter, April 20  at 10:00.  Come one and all.  There will be the Easter egg hunt for children, a light breakfast, crafts, and an Easter story by Father Phil.  It’s always a great time.

EASTER TREATS – bring your favorite coffee cake, bread or decorated eggs for our Easter Coffee Hour!

First Communion  has been moved to Sunday June 2.  Prep classes are held after the 10am service, starting April 28th.  Contact Nancy Crysler.

Five New Sunday School Teachers will alternate weeks starting today to teach the younger children, while a new class for older children will begin today. Several middle school and high school students have volunteered to serve as helpers in the classrooms.  Thanks to one and all!

A Playroom for children after services and programs has been created with all kinds of fun toys and materials for kids. Its right across from the Sunday School room.  We prefer kids choose to play there instead of the Sunday School room “after hours”.

Thank You to all who wrote prayers for which the Sunday School will pray.

Maundy Thursday Potluck! The central event of Maundy Thursday was Jesus eating a meal with his disciples. This year we will gather in Galloway Hall for an actual shared meal, which will be the heart of the service. It will also include several readings, prayer, a homily by Thomas Benson, and Holy Communion. The service ends in the chapel with the stripping of the altar. Don’t miss this great new addition to our Holy Week services.

“Jesus Of Montreal” Is Our Holy Wednesday Movie this year. An evening prayer service begins at 6:30pm in the chapel. The movie begins at 6:45. A pizza dinner is provided. — Fearing his church’s passion play is becoming dated, a modern priest hires a ragtag group of actors to bring new life to the play. As they enter into the Gospel story it takes deep root in their lives, leading them to surprising and poignant actions that daringly challenge the status quo and may well change them forever.

The Women’s and Men’s Bathrooms have both been updated with new fixtures and sensor-flush systems thanks to your support of the Capital Campaign. The Campaign has also covered repairs to our ceilings  in various places over the winter. This Spring and Summer even more dramatic improvements will begin as the chapel exterior is scheduled to be stripped of lead paint and repainted and the front lawn is set to receive a major lighting upgrade. If you have not given to the Capital Campaign, now is a great time to get on board. Point your internet browser to saintjamesgi.net/cc150 or speak to Fr. Phil or a member of the vestry. For those who are giving, THANK YOU!

An All-Night Vigil is being held in the chapel Maundy Thursday night and Good Friday morning. Two spots are available each hour. Will you watch and wait with Jesus? The sign-up sheet can be found by the office.

The Easter Vigil Sunrise Service begins at 7:30am on Easter morning, April 21, in the chapel. We begin in the dark with the lighting of a single candle to represent Christ’s resurrection. This beautiful service gives a special start to Easter.

The Easter Festival Eucharist begins at 10 am on Easter morning, April 21, including a Festival Brass Quintet and a full choir. This service is a singularly joyful celebration of Resurrection not to be missed!

Easter Is a Perfect Day for Baptisms.  To find out more speak to Fr. Phil or contact him at rector@saintjamesgi.net or 734-676-1727

Confirmation –Confirmation by the Bishop is every three years at St. James and 2019 is the year!  On Sept. 29, Bishop Gibbs will be officiating at St. James and confirming those  willing and eligible.  Any high school student who would like to explore the possibility of Confirmation this Sept. please let Nancy Crysler know.  We are also making it available to any future 8th grader this year  as well.  St. James has a number of mature 7th graders going into 8th grade in Sept.  Confirmation is a public affirmation of your belief in Christianity.  Even if you are not certain at this point of your beliefs, you are encouraged to attend the training to explore your faith.  You can make a decision after the training.  Confirmation classes will begin on Sunday Aug. 4 and run through Sept.  They will be held after the 10:00 service for an hour with lunch served.  Aug. isn’t the most convenient time for classes but we are subject to the Bishop’s schedule and we’ll work around yours.  Please consider this opportunity prayerfully.  It is a huge step in your spiritual growth.

Meet The Bishop Candidates at one of the “Walk Abouts” that have been planned by the Diocese: Friday, May 17, 7:00 PM at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Detroit; Saturday, May 18, 4:00 PM at All Saints’, East Lansing; Sunday, May 19, 3:30 PM at St. Clare’s, Ann Arbor. Our electors are Wendy Kiblawi, Erica Benson, and Gwyn Dugliss, with Jim Holubka as our alternate. You are invited to engage them in conversation about your hopes for the next bishop. The electing convention will be held on June 1, 2019.
