A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Sunday School children heading for the cookies!

Jerry Zavadil’s Garden Interment is being held this morning after the 10am service.  All are welcome.

Red Is The Color for Pentecost, which is Sunday, June 9. Consider wearing red to get in the spirit of the day!

Senior Recognitions are Sunday, June 9.  We will be honoring our graduates and sending them off to their future with our prayers and blessings.  The 11th grade students and their parents will provide a breakfast before the service and the rest of us will honor the graduates after the service for a special send-off.

The Last Day Of Sunday School is next Sunday June 9th.  We will also honor our teachers & helpers.

The 6th Annual Boat Cruise on the Detroit River is scheduled for Saturday, June 15th beginning at 7:00pm. Tickets are $20.00 for adults, and free for children 18 and under. Mark your calendars and get ready for another fun night on the river hosted by the St. James Men’s Group.

The 10AM Service Moves to the Chapel on Sunday, June 16th. That will be our first day worshipping there. Services continue in the chapel throughout the summer, until the first Sunday after Labor Day.

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for August 12-16. The online registration will be available soon. Mark your calendars for this amazing parishwide event.

The Bishop Will Visit on September 22, 2019. On this date we will present people to him for Confirmation (for those who were baptized as infants but never made an adult profession of faith), Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows (for those who desire to renew their baptism), and Reception into the Episcopal Church (for those who were members of other denominations before joining Saint James). Speak to Fr. Phil to learn more.

Gold Watch Found — We received a padded letter in the mail this week with a gold watch in it! An accompanying note said that the watch was found 2 years ago at a rummage sale near the donuts. The person picked it up and put it in their coat pocket, then moved away and only recently put that same coat on again. Fr. Phil has this watch. Please spread the word and contact Fr. Phil if you think it may be yours.

Share the Joy of Coffee Hour  Are you willing to prep the coffee before coffee hour and host by providing a snack? It would be a great help, as this is an entirely volunteer effort. Serving, cleanup and bringing light refreshments (Kroger cookies will do) is all that is necessary.  Please take a turn hosting this time. The signup sheet can be found on the table in Galloway Hall or see Joan Hemsworth.

Service Recordings Our weekly 8am worship services are available online. Find them on our website saintjamesgi.net under the “Media” tab, or at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi which is YouTube’s main site. Services are available live and for later viewing.

Open Bible Study  A drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday morning in the Fireplace Room from 9:05-9:50AM. The study requires no prep and you can come on whatever Sundays are good for you. Come try it out.

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, &  Fri 9-12.

Out There With Outreach: Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen June 15, 2019

Hello dear friends, in April we served 135 guests at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen for the Easter Saturday meal.  On the 3rd Saturday in May, Sacred Heart prepared and served the meal for 101 people.  We are happy to be there to serve, but wonder if it is good that the number of guests is up. Is it because people are able to come, or because fewer places are serving, or other reasons? Regardless, we appreciate all of you that help.  Thank you!

St. James next time to prepare and serve will be Sat. June 15th.  Sign-up sheets are posted on the Out Reach Bulletin Board in the hallway, between River room and the Choir room.  We will meet in the chapel parking lot at 8:30 am to load the cars and carpool downtown. Spirit of Hope is located on corner of Trumbull and Martin Luther King Blvd.  You may also meet us down there at 9:15am.  If you are prepping the meal you will be done by approx. 10:30.  If you are serving the meal you need to be there by 11:30am. If you sign up and you cannot make it please let us know asap .

Thank you so much!  Amy and Frank Kohair 734-693-0694

Traditional Irish Soda Bread (Fr. Phil’s Pilgrimage Bread)

Wherever you go in Ireland you can find the same Irish soda bread — brown, nutty, and delicious. During my pilgrimage I took to wrapping two buttered pieces in a napkin (buttered sides in, of course) and eating them through the day as a snack, sometimes instead of lunch. Upon my arrival back in the United States I sought out a recipe. What you find below is as close as I could get to the original. It is based on a recipe found in the NYTimes cooking archive. Feel free to personalize your bread by adding sunflowers, honey, caraway seeds, raisins, egg, and more. The bread is versatile. Whatever you add, it is sure to be a delight.

INGREDIENTS

1   Cup  Graham Flour or Whole-wheat Flour

½   Cup  Unbleached All-purpose Flour

½   Cup  Rolled Oats

½   Cup  Steel-cut Oats

2   Tbs   Flaxseed Meal (Optional)

2   tsp    Brown Sugar (break into granules in bowl)

2   tsp    Baking Soda

½   tsp    Salt

1 ½ Cup  Buttermilk or substitute*

*(1½ Tbs Vinegar + milk until 1½ Cups total; mix; & wait 5 mins; OR,     mix yogurt and milk to 1½ Cups total, so it is as thick as buttermilk.)

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a bread pan.

Step 2

Mix together all dry ingredients (all but the buttermilk).

Step 3

Pour buttermilk into the center of the dry ingredients. Mix gently with fingers or spatula, 30-45 seconds max. Scrape the dough into the bread pan and smooth it into the corners.

Step 4

Bake for 40 minutes. The crust will be brown and a toothpick will come out clean. The loaf will be shallow in the pan. Remove and cool. Enjoy!
