Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Little Ms. Evelyn peeking in to the office to make sure Colleen is doing her work!

Today We Congratulate the graduating Seniors Ryan Calhoun, Andrew Ador Johnson, Emma Rankine, Tommy Shumate, and Hannah Thomas.  You’ve invested 13 years and lots of hard work; we are so proud of the adults that you have become!  After the 10AM service join in a special reception for these grads.

10AM Services Move to the chapel next week, June 16, 2019, for the summer.

Offering Envelopes Are Always Available on the table across from the office. Pick them up as you need them. Please be sure to fill out the little card found in each offering box to enable our Treasurer to associate your envelope number with your household.

The 6th Annual Boat Cruise on the Detroit River is scheduled for Saturday, June 15th beginning at 7:00pm. There will be a service of holy communion in Bishop Park at 6:00pm, prior to boarding the boat. Children 18 and under are free; adult tickets are $20/person. Tickets are available after the service and in the main office (676-1727). Tickets are limited. Get ready for another fun night on the river hosted by the St. James Men’s Group. Don’t miss the boat!

The Next Soup Kitchen Will Be Sat. June 15th.  Sign-up sheets are posted on the Out Reach Bulletin Board in the hallway, between River room and the Choir room.  We will meet in the chapel parking lot at 8:30 am to load the cars and carpool downtown. Spirit of Hope is located on corner of Trumbull and Martin Luther King Blvd.  You may also meet us down there at 9:15am.  If you are prepping the meal you will be done by approx. 10:30.  If you are serving the meal you need to be there by 11:30am. If you sign up and you cannot make it please let us know asap .  Amy and Frank Kohair 734-693-0694

“News & Updates” is a new section of our Good News Weekly, dedicated to brief write-ups of recent events or celebrations. The section can contain personal news, like births, graduations, retirements, and promotions, or church news about such things as evening speakers, improvements, thank-you’s, event recaps, etc. If you are hosting any church event, please send a write-up following, so people can keep up with all the wonderful things happening in our parish. Send NEWS to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net and check out the section, beginning on page 3.

ChristNet Supporters:  We are pleased to announce that Gorno Ford has offered us an opportunity to make $6,000.00 which will be used for the kitchen at our new facility.  This is a free fundraiser!   Come to Gorno Ford in Woodhaven on June 20th anytime between 12-8 pm and  answer four questions, take a test drive of any car, respond to their email and ChristNet will get $20 per household. This should take you no more than 15 minutes!   We can have up to 300 drivers, which comes to $6,000.   Thank you for your continued support of ChristNet.

Diaper Drive  Thank you for your continued support of the Bottom’s Up Diaper bank.  The program has distributed over a half million diapers to downriver families at Fish and Loaves in Taylor.  The weekend of June 22 and 23 will be the annual drive on Grosse Ile for diapers.  Representatives from all the Island Churches will be accepting diaper/monetary donations at Kroger and in all island churches on Sunday the 23.  Please help make this year’s diaper drive a success.  The babies will thank you!

Vacation Bible School is scheduled for August 12-16. The online registration will be available soon. Mark your calendars for this amazing parish wide event.

The Bishop Will Visit on September 22, 2019. On this date we will present people to him for Confirmation (for those who were baptized as infants but never made an adult profession of faith), Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows (for those who desire to renew their baptism), and Reception into the Episcopal Church (for those who were members of other denominations before joining Saint James). Speak to Fr. Phil to learn more.

Gold Watch Found — We received a padded letter in the mail this week with a gold watch in it! An accompanying note said that the watch was found 2 years ago at a rummage sale near the donuts. The person picked it up and put it in their coat pocket, then moved away and only recently put that same coat on again. Fr. Phil has this watch. Please spread the word and contact Fr. Phil if you think it may be yours.

Share the Joy of Coffee Hour  Are you willing to prep the coffee before coffee hour and host by providing a snack? It would be a great help, as this is an entirely volunteer effort. Serving, cleanup and bringing light refreshments (Kroger cookies will do) is all that is necessary.  Please take a turn hosting this time. The signup sheet can be found on the table in Galloway Hall or see Joan Hemsworth.

Service Recordings Our weekly 8am worship services are available online. Find them on our website saintjamesgi.net under the “Media” tab, or at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi which is YouTube’s main site. Services are available live and for later viewing.

Open Bible Study  A drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday morning in the Fireplace Room from 9:05-9:50AM. The study requires no prep and you can come on whatever Sundays are good for you. Come try it out.

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, &  Fri 9-12.

A new stained glass window has been installed above the main doors to the front parking lot. It depicts Jesus blessing children in a beautiful natural setting. Offered in memory of Ed Larsen, an island pediatrician, the window is scheduled to be dedicated in a short service on Sunday, June 30.

A new bench has been installed in the memorial garden, just under the beautiful dogwood tree. Dedicated by Linda Shannon, her brother Jack Tame, and cousin Kathy Callicoat, the bench is offered to the glory of God in loving memory of Lila Negeme Williams and Pamela Kay Shannon, Linda’s sister and daughter.

Six new light poles were installed this week on our front island of grass as part of our 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign. These lights provide safety and charm to the property. They also allow us to stop renting the  bent and splintering light poles from DTE that these poles replace. Thank you to all who are donating to the Capital Campaign! If you haven’t contributed yet, open saintjamesgi.net/cc150 to find out more. Please make a pledge of support. You can be a part of these big projects and lots more to come over the next 18 months.

Two new lights for our road sign were installed this week. Also, three electrical outlets have been installed on the front lawn—one by the sign and two by the front parking lot. These will provide power for ChurchFEST, Vacation Bible School, and outdoor services, without our having to run 100ft trip-hazards across the parking lot. These are all Capital Campaign Projects. Thank you for supporting the 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign!

The exterior of the Angel of Praise window was meticulously cleaned last week. Then a new protective covering was installed over the window to protect it. This covering is 10x stronger than tempered glass, shatterproof, perfectly clear, breathable through the frame, and especially light, meaning that it exerts less weight on our chapel walls. The two side windows on either side of the Angel of Praise were also  covered with the same protective material. Take a walk through your chapel courtyard and check out the good work! This is another 150th Anniversary Capital Campaign Project. Thank you for supporting the campaign!
