A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Love Abounds!  Colleen Lough holds Baby Baker while Mom Natalia leans in for a kiss.

We Welcome Rev. Sally Boelter this morning, as Fr. Phil is away at a family wedding.

This Week’s Wednesday Service will not be held because of Vacation Bible School. We pick up again next Wednesday at 10:15am. If you’re not familiar with this great service, it follows the story of a saint, includes Holy Communion, and is followed by a pop-up potluck. All are welcome!

VBS is this week! Sign up your kids, grandkids, and neighborhood friends for this great week of activity. Click on saintjamesgi.net and follow the VBS link to register.

Soup Kitchen: Help Needed Have you always wanted to volunteer?   St. James will be preparing & serving the meal at Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen on Saturday, August 17, because the Detroit Moose Hockey Team is unable to do it that day. Sign-up sheets are posted on the Outreach bulletin board in the main hallway. Please sign up soon, so we know how many folks we will have!

Upcoming Memorial Services at Saint James include a memorial for Stephen Marrichi (grandson of Jean Fernandez) on Saturday August 17 at 11am, a memorial for Barry Carrigan (husband of Alice Carrigan) on Monday August 19 at 10:30am, and a memorial for Teddie Fornwalt (daughter of Scott and Laura Fornwalt) on Saturday, August 24 at 10am. Please keep their family and friends in your prayers.

The next Safe Church Training is scheduled for September 21 at St. Stephen’s, Wyandotte. Register here: tinyurl.com/sc-wyandotte . This training is required for all parishioners who work with children or vulnerable adults, including Sunday School teachers, Sunday School helpers, and home-visitors. Thanks to the 25 people who took this training already!

ChurchFest Sunday marks the start of our program year. On Sunday, September 8th we will have a rousing 10am service followed by a church picnic on the front lawn. Bring a dish to share and bring a friend! We’ll have a bouncy house for the kids and literature about the year’s programs. It will be wonderful day of celebration. Mark your calendars!!

ChurchFEST Help is needed in three important areas: 1) Volunteers who can arrive at 9am on Sunday, September 8, to set up tables and chairs for our outdoor potluck lunch. 2) Volunteers to set up drinks that morning for 100. (Water and iced tea work great). 3) Volunteers to provide cups, plates, napkins, and plasticware for 100 and set them out. Can you help? Tell Fr. Phil, or better yet, call or email Colleen in the office— 734-676-1727 or office@saintjamesgi.net

Rummage Sale Is Coming Again Soon! The sale is October 4-5, but we cannot accept items yet. Please do not bring any rummage until Sept 16. We need to have access to our storage cabinets, tables and chairs in the garage to set up the sale. Thank you for your understanding and help.

Help Weeding A Home Garden is needed by one of our older parishioners. Can you or a teenager in your household help? The work will be paid. Call 734-341-2554 or talk to Fr. Phil to find out more.

Share the Joy of Coffee Hour  A “Coffee and Conversation” signup sheet is always on the main food table at coffee hour. Please sign up for a Sunday to prep the coffee and provide a simple snack. This would be a great help, as coffee hour is an entirely volunteer effort.

The Yellow Envelopes in the pews are for spontaneous gifts to the Capital Campaign. Fifty households pledged to our 150th Anniversary Capital campaign, but our goal is 100% participation. If you did not make a pledge, your support is still needed! Use the yellow envelopes to join the effort that is making our church safer and more sound for the generations that will follow us. Help us get to 100% support.

Offering Envelopes Are Always Available on the table across from the office. Pick them up as you need them. Please be sure to fill out the little card found in each offering box to enable our Treasurer to associate your envelope number with your household.

Service Recordings from our 8am service are at saintjamesgi.net located in the “Media” tab, and at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi

First Aid Kits are located throughout the church: 1) On the shelf under the main altar; 2) On the coat rack in the main hall by the office; 3) In the kitchen by the sink; and 4) In the chapel sacristy.

Open Bible Study  An open, drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday in the Fireplace Room from 9:05-9:50am. The study requires no prep and you can come and go. Try it out this Sunday!

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, &  Fri 9-12.

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

 Some Musical Notes:

Félix-Alexandre Guilmant (1837 – 1911) was a French organist and composer. He was the organist of La Trinité from 1871 until 1901. A noted pedagogue, performer, and improviser, Guilmant helped found the Schola Cantorum de Paris. He was appointed as Professor of Organ at the Paris Conservatoire in 1896.  His students always praised his kindness and attention to detail. As a teacher, Guilmant was noted for his kindness and attention to detail. His students’ recollections feature accounts of a particular focus on all facets of a note: attack, release, character.  He was also celebrated for his kindness and attention to detail. The prelude today, broad in character and style, seems as a fitting piece to set the tone for our worship today, and given the text of our first hymn, number 636, “How FIrm a Foundation.”

“If Thou But Trust in God to Guide Thee,”  Hymn 635, Georg Neumark (b. Langensalza, Thuringia, Germany, 1621; d. Weimar, Germany, 1681) lived during the time of the Thirty Years’ War, when social and economic conditions were deplorable. He had personal trials as well. On his way to Konigsberg to study at the university, traveling in the comparative safety of a group of merchants, he was robbed of nearly all his possessions. During the next two years he spent much of his time looking for employment. He finally secured a tutoring position in Kiel. Neumark wrote this text at age twenty, just after he had finally been able to find employment as a tutor for a judge in Kiel. Neumark was so relieved and grateful to God by his change in circumstance that he wrote this text, saying, “This good fortune, which came so suddenly and, as it were, from heaven, so rejoiced my heart that I wrote my hymn ‘Wer nur . . .’ to the glory of my God on that first day.”

Written in Kiel, Germany, in 1641, the seven-stanza text (“Wer nur den lieben Gott lasst walten”) had the following heading: “a hymn of consolation, that God will care for and preserve his own in his own time; after the saying ‘cast thy burden upon the Lord and He shall sustain thee.’ Psalm 55:22.” The text was published with the tune, also composed by Neumark, in Fortgepflanzter Musikalisch-Poetischer Lustwald (1657).  This hymn from a time long ago still speaks to God’s children today as we look to our loving Father for guidance.

Buxtehude, Dietrich also spelled Dieterich, (born 1637, probably in Oldesloe, Holstein—died May 9, 1707, Lübeck), Danish or German organist and composer of church music, one of the most esteemed and influential composers of his time.

It is usually assumed that he began his musical education with his father, who was organist at Helsingborg (c. 1638–41) and at Helsingør (Elsinore; c. 1642–71), both then part of Denmark. Buxtehude settled at Lübeck in 1688 as organist of St. Mary’s Church. There he gained such fame as a composer that the city became a mecca for musicians of northern Germany. The young Handel visited him in 1703, and in 1705 young Bach walked more than 200 miles to see him. Both young men hoped to succeed the master at Lübeck, but marriage to one of his daughters was a condition and each found it unacceptable.

Buxtehude’s duties as church organist included composing works for public festivals, marriages, and funerals of the great merchant families of the city. He left a considerable amount of vocal and instrumental music, much of which was not recovered until the 20th century; much more certainly remains lost.

The postlude today “ Fugue in C Major” is commonly referred to as the “Jig Fugue” because of the lilting 12/8 time signature. This work is thought to be the inspiration for J.S. Bach’s Fugue in G major (Fugue a la Gigue), composed a few years afterwards.

Upcoming Music Events:

Vocal Choir and bell choir is starting up again very soon! ! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays. Our first rehearsal is Thursday, September 5!
