Reception, Reaffirmation, and Confirmation are three things only a bishop can do. To be received into the Episcopal Church, to reaffirm (renew) your baptismal commitment to God in Christ, or to be confirmed, speak to Fr. Phil. A short but important preparation for these things is necessary.
Our Memorial Garden Burial Records are currently being updated. We would appreciate your help in confirming that the information we have on file is fully accurate. If you or someone you love has been buried in the memorial garden, please call or drop in to check our records.
ChurchFest Sunday marks the start of our program year. On Sunday, September 8th we will have a rousing 10am service followed by a church picnic on the front lawn. Bring a dish to share and bring a friend! We’ll have a bouncy house for the kids and literature about the year’s programs. It will be wonderful day of celebration. Mark your calendars!!
ChurchFEST Help is needed in two important areas: 1) Volunteers who can arrive at 9am on Sunday, September 8, to set up tables and chairs for our outdoor potluck lunch. 2) Volunteers to set up drinks that morning for 100. (Water and iced tea work great). Can you help? Tell Fr. Phil, or better yet, call or email Colleen in the office— 734-676-1727 or office@saintjamesgi.net
ECW Welcome Back Luncheon – Please join us on Sunday, September 15th at 12:00 at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club. This event is a thank you for all your hard work. We know that a lot of the younger ladies of the church are working hard also and we would love to have you at the luncheon. This is a good time to relax and get to know each other better. There are signup sheets outside the main church and also outside the chapel. Looking forward to seeing you all.
The next Safe Church Training is scheduled for September 21 at St. Stephen’s, Wyandotte. Register here: tinyurl.com/sc-wyandotte . This training is required for all parishioners who work with children or vulnerable adults, including Sunday School teachers, Sunday School helpers, and home-visitors. Thanks to the 25 people who took this training already!
One Service of Worship is scheduled for the morning of the bishop’s visit, September 22 at 10amin compliance with the bishop’s wishes. He visits only every 3 years. Mark your calendars, it should be fun!
Baptism is scheduled for the day of the bishop’s visit, September 22. The next date for baptism after that will be November 3rd. Please contact the office if you are interested in learning more.
A Reception is Planned for the Bishop for the morning of his visit. Please bring a snack to be set out as part of a spread for that morning, if possible. (Keep in mind, with the bishop’s impending retirement this will be his last visit among us.)
Rummage Sale Is Coming Again Soon! The sale is October 4-5, but we cannot accept items yet. Please do not bring any rummage until Sept 16. We need to have access to our storage cabinets, tables and chairs in the garage to set up the sale. Thank you for your understanding and help.
Help Weeding A Home Garden is needed by one of our older parishioners. Can you or a teenager in your household help? The work will be paid. Call 734-341-2554 or talk to Fr. Phil to find out more.
Share the Joy of Coffee Hour A “Coffee and Conversation” signup sheet is always on the main food table at coffee hour. Please sign up for a Sunday to prep the coffee and provide a simple snack. This would be a great help, as coffee hour is an entirely volunteer effort.
The Yellow Envelopes in the pews are for spontaneous gifts to the Capital Campaign. Fifty households pledged to our 150th Anniversary Capital campaign, but our goal is 100% participation. If you did not make a pledge, your support is still needed! Use the yellow envelopes to join the effort that is making our church safer and more sound for the generations that will follow us. Help us get to 100% support.
Offering Envelopes Are Always Available on the table across from the office. Pick them up as you need them. Please be sure to fill out the little card found in each offering box to enable our Treasurer to associate your envelope number with your household.
Service Recordings from our 8am service are at saintjamesgi.net located in the “Media” tab, and at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi
First Aid Kits are located throughout the church: 1) On the shelf under the main altar; 2) On the coat rack in the main hall by the office; 3) In the kitchen by the sink; and 4) In the chapel sacristy.
Open Bible Study An open, drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday in the Fireplace Room from 9:05-9:50am. The study requires no prep and you can come and go. Try it out this Sunday!
Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.
Secretary Office Hours: Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, & Fri 9-12.
Open Office Hours Fr. Phil is available on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 and 6:30 pm for anyone to drop in without an appointment. For a meeting of 40 minutes or more, please call ahead.
🎵 🎶 🎶 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
Music Note: “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing” is a hymn written by Charles Wesley. He wrote over 6,000 hymns, many of which were subsequently reprinted, frequently with alterations, in hymnals, particularly those of Methodist churches.
Charles Wesley was suffering a bout of pleurisy in May, 1738, while he and his brother were studying under the Moravian scholar Peter Boehler in London. At the time, Wesley was plagued by extreme doubts about his faith. Taken to bed with the sickness, on May 21 Wesley was attended by a group of Christians who offered him testimony and basic care, and he was deeply affected by this. He read from his Bible and found himself deeply affected by the words, and at peace with God. Shortly his strength began to return. He wrote of this experience in his journal, and counted it as a renewal of his faith; when his brother John had a similar experience on the May 24, the two men met and sang a hymn Charles had written in praise of his renewal.
One year from the experience, Wesley was taken with the urge to write another hymn, this one in commemoration of his renewal of faith. This hymn took the form of an 18-stanza poem, beginning with the opening lines ‘Glory to God, and praise, and love,/Be ever, ever given’ and was published in 1740 and entitled ‘For the anniversary day of one’s conversion’. The seventh verse, which begins, ‘O for a thousand tongues to sing’, and which now is invariably the first verse of a shorter hymn, recalls Böhler’s words, ‘Had I a thousand tongues I would praise Him with them all’. The hymn was placed first in John Wesley’s A Collection of Hymns for the People Called Methodists published in 1780. Thankfully, this hymn of praise has been included in many Christian hymnals around the world!
The prelude by Robert Hobby is a set of variations based on selected stanzas. Can you determine which variation goes with a particular stanza? If not, see me after the service and I’ll let you in on the composers thoughts.
Upcoming Music Events:
Vocal Choir and bell choir is starting up again very soon! ! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays. Our first rehearsal is Thursday, September 5!

Out there With Outreach ! Last Saturday, August 17 was our most recent opportunity to prepare and serve the meal at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen on the corner of Trumbull and Martin Luther King Blvd. in Detroit. This meal left us with so very much to be grateful for! We served a cold spiral pasta salad loaded with chopped fresh vegetables: cucumbers, red, yellow & green peppers, celery, bright green peas, purple onions, cauliflower and broccoli, all drizzled in yummy Italian dressing! Larry & Sally Sutherland generously donated four turkeys which were roasted by Collie Hooper-Yan, Joshua Henrickson, Lynda Van Engelen and Frank. The turkeys were “surgically” sliced by Dr. Zack & Ian Lewis and Zack’s father in Law and were served on the side of the hearty vegetarian salad with a bowl of pineapple chunks, dinner rolls and butter. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches were made “to go”. Natalia, Anthony and little 3 month old Jeremiah Baker were joined by Natalia’s lovely parents: Ana Maria & Napoleon in preparing the meal as well as serving! Three generations working together was a beautiful thing to see. Happy little baby Jeremiah filled the room with huge smiles! Merri Lewis and her mom Jan helped to make sandwiches with Lynda Van Engelen, Sue Johnson, Grandma Madeleine Jones and Granddaughter Evy (who took a sandwich she had made herself to give to a hungry person Evy saw on the way there) Anthony filled all the bowls of condiments. Joshua Henrickson chopped veggies with our friend John Laginess, Sue & Warren Johnson and Natalia, her mom & dad. Barry Van Engelen and Frank scrubbed pots, pans and trays. All of the men opened the big cans and recycled them. Friend John, served cold water and juice as well as making a coffee run from his own pocket. At the end of the day he bagged all the trash and removed it. The well oiled machine of friends and family kindly served our 107-plus guests with the love they would have shown Christ. We truly appreciate the many volunteers who came forward to help with the prep and serving when we were running short as the day came near. It was a wonderful day! Watch the Good News and your Sunday bulletin for news of our next turn to prepare and serve the meal at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen,
We have good news in regard to our old friend Norm Hawkins. His health is greatly improving but he is now living way out in Pontiac, so the chance of his returning to Spirit of Hope is slim. It has become quite evident that Norm did an extraordinary job in his constant loving care of the Spirit of Hope Church and Grounds. We will all pray for Norm that he will continue to get better. With Love & Thanks to all of you, always, Amy & Frank Kohair
A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered! to make VBS happen this year! We couldn’t have done it without every last person helping however they were called. From working the prep sessions to showing up and working the week of VBS, 1 day or all 5 days; from help in the kitchen to registration to all the people praying that we didn’t even know about. As a result, we were ready to handle the 86 kids that came through our doors and raised $298 for Christmas Angel Tree this year. They say it takes a village, but last week I was told “it takes a church” and I am so proud and blessed to be a part of this one that gives so much back. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Erica Benson
