Sunday Kid’s Church starts today, September 15! Children Preschool- 5th grade meet in the River Room at 10am to sing songs and engage a Bible story. During announcements, our children return to the worship space to receive communion with their family. Register in advance on the St. James website at saintjamesgi.net.
The next “Safe Church” Training to raise awareness about how we must support and protect our children and vulnerable adults is scheduled for September 21 at St. Stephen’s, Wyandotte. This training is required for all Sunday School teachers, Sunday School helpers, childcare workers, and home-communion visitors. Thanks to the 27 people who took this training already! The cost of this training can be reimbursed by the church. Just bring your registration form into the office and Fr. Phil will help.
Reception, Reaffirmation, baptism, and Confirmation are happening on Sept 22 as part of the bishop’s visit. To be received into the Episcopal Church, to be baptized, to reaffirm your baptismal vows, or to be confirmed speak to Fr. Phil. A short but important preparation for these things is necessary.
One Worship Service on Sept 22 will be held at 10AM for Bishop Gibbs’ visit, in accordance with his wishes. He visits only every 3 years. Mark your calendars, it should be fun.
A Reception is Planned for Bishop Gibbs on the morning of his visit. Please bring a snack to be set out as part of a spread for that morning. With the bishop’s impending retirement this will be his last visit with us.
The “ Downton Abbey” Movie will be playing at MJR and we’re going! The plan is to see the show on September 24th at 10 a.m. The cost is $5 for a ticket. Please speak to MaryLou Cartwright about ordering your tickets so we can be seated near each other. After the Movie we will go to Sibley Gardens Dining Room for lunch. We will need to know how many are coming. ECW Ladies, everyone come, and bring a friend if you like. Hope to see you there
Rummage Sale Is Coming! The sale is October 4-5, but we cannot accept items yet. Please do not bring any rummage until Sept 16. We need to have access to our storage cabinets, tables and chairs in the garage to set up the sale. Thank you for your understanding and help.
A Celebration Open House for Bishop Gibbs is being hosted by the Downriver Deanery (that’s us!) in conjunction with the Detroit and McGhee Deaneries on Saturday, October 19, from 4-8pm. RSVP by clicking this link: tinyurl.com/gibbs-open-house
Be sure to grab the Blue Book, the Yellow Pages of Ministry, and the Music Series Flyer from the table across from the office if you didn’t get them last week. Having them will help you track all the great things happening this year at Saint James.
Vocal Choir and Bell Choir Has Started Up Again! ! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:00, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.
Healing Prayer Is Available every Sunday morning at the 10am service during communion. Prayer Team members can be found at the back of the main sanctuary by the baptismal font with “Prayer Team” name tags. They will ask what you would like prayers for. Then they will pray for that thing. Healing, Thanksgiving, Hope, Employment, Friends, Self, Family — these and more are all appropriate things to bring up to the prayer ministers. To join the Prayer Team speak to Fr. Phil, Linda Shannon, or Herman Rugel.
The Book Group is back! We are reading the eminently readable and academically current “What the Gospels Meant” by Garry Wills. For the first group (9/12, 10:30-11:30am, library) we will read the book’s Introduction, which is photocopied and available on the resource table across from the main office. In subsequent weeks we will spend three weeks on each Gospel, reading 15-20 pages per week. The open study is held every Thursday from 10:30am-12 noon in the library. Please buy the book for future meetings.
Are You A Musician? Whatever your skill level, if you have a favorite musical selection that you are interested in playing during the 10:00 A.M. worship service, please speak with our Minister of Music, Jim Johnson. As an inviting and inclusive community of worshipers, we welcome those with musical gifts to participate in worship by sharing your gifts.
Preparing for Greens Market As the fall approaches our plans for Greens market begin. Can you please save your peach pits and bring them to the backroom so they can be used on our wreath trimming? We always use greens – boxwood, holly, juniper, balsam & cedar – so delay your fall trimming until Thanksgiving and then bring in the branches for us to use at the Greens Market! Many Thanks!!
Share the Joy of Coffee Hour A “Coffee and Conversation” signup sheet is always on the main food table at coffee hour. Please sign up for a Sunday to prep the coffee and provide a simple snack. This would be a great help, as coffee hour is an entirely volunteer effort.
The Yellow Envelopes in the pews are for gifts to the Capital Campaign. If you did not make a pledge, your support is critically important. Use the yellow envelopes and join the effort!
Service Recordings from our 8am service are found at saintjamesgi.net under the “Media” tab, and at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi
First Aid Kits are located throughout the church: 1) On the shelf under the main altar; 2) On the coat rack in the main hall by the office; 3) In the kitchen by the sink; and 4) In the chapel sacristy.
Sunday Bible Study An open, drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday in the Fireplace Room at 9:05am. The study requires no prep. Try it out this Sunday!
Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.
Secretary Office Hours: Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, & Fri 9-12.
Open Office Hours Fr. Phil is available on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 to 6:30 pm for anyone to drop in without an appointment. For a meeting of 40 minutes or more, please call ahead.
🎵 🎶 🎶 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
John Stanley was born in London on 17 January 1712. At about the age of two, he had the misfortune to fall on a marble hearth with a china basin in his hand, an accident which left him almost blind.
He began studying music at the age of seven. Under the guidance of Maurice Greene, composer and organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral, he studied “with great diligence, and a success that was astonishing” (Burney). At the age of nine he played the organ, probably as an occasional deputy, at All Hallows Bread Street. When he was eleven years old, Stanley was appointed organist to the church at a salary of £20 per annum.
When he was fourteen “in preference to a great number of candidates” (Burney) he was chosen as organist at St Andrew’s, Holborn, and at the age of seventeen became the youngest person ever to obtain the Bachelor of Music degree (B.Mus.) at the University of Oxford.
In 1734 he was appointed organist to the Society of the Inner Temple, a position which he held until his death in 1786. It was at the ancient Temple Church that his brilliant playing upon the organ and harpsichord attracted the attention of many fine musicians including George Frideric Handel, who regularly visited the church to hear him. Stanley was also an outstanding violinist.
There is so much more to his amazing story than can be printed in the Music Notes. You might be interested to Google his name and read more, especially the fact that he was not limited by a visual impairment. Thanks be to God for such an amazing journey and the legacy of music he left for generations to come.
