A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK
Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net Tom Coleman takes a moment with Jesus at our Episcopal cathedral in Detroit. Found along Woodward Avenue, this sculpture of Jesus is surrounded by stools welcoming all comers. By presenting Jesus as one who is tired and homeless, we are encouraged to see Christ in the needy who are in our midst.

The Blessing of the Pets is scheduled for Sunday, October 13 at Saint James. Bring your pets to be blessed by Fr. Phil on the front lawn of the church between 11:20 a.m. to 12 noon. Or, if you have a docile pet that is leashed or otherwise restrained, your pet is also welcome in the actual worship service. Bring forward your furry, gilled, or feathered friend at the end of communion and you can get your pet blessed in church!
A “Barnyard Buddies” Petting Zoo is coming to St. James on the morning of the animal blessing, Sunday Oct 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon. This is for kids of all ages! Make friends with lambs, little goats, bunnies, bantam chickens, ducks, and depending on the weather maybe also a giant tortoise and an African pigmy hedgehog. Consider inviting friends and neighbors.
ECW Diocesan Lunch is canceled.
Nursery Care is available every Sunday from 9:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

Point your browser to saintjamesgi.net/cc150 to help us finish the chapel project, replace the Education Wing windows, and resurface the back parking lot.
The Next Soup Kitchen work day is Nov. 16, 2019. More info to come.

Emails asking for money or gift cards are never from Fr. Phil. Unfortunately, scam emails continue to proliferate asking for funds to help someone in need. No matter how genuine the email seems, Fr. Phil will never send you an email asking for money or gift cards. When in doubt call or text him at 734-775-7140. We recommend that you save this number in your phone now so you have it handy when you need it.
In The Back Handicapped Parking Lot, people are sometimes pulling in and just stopping, effectively parking their car along the side of the building behind the parked cars. This blocks everyone else from getting in and out of those parking spaces. Thank you for parking in the specified spots and not alongside the building in the handicapped lot.
Handicapped Parking Places, and those close to the entrances, are needed on Sunday mornings for those who have physical challenges that make long walks difficult. If you are able to walk a few extra steps, please choose parking places that are further from the building. Many thanks!
Peach Pits & Greens for Greens Market As the fall approaches, our plans for Greens Market begin. Save your peach pits and bring them to the back room to be used on our wreath trimming. Also, please delay your fall bush trimming until Thanksgiving so you can bring in the branches for us to use at the Greens Market. Boxwood, Holly, Juniper, Balsam & Cedar—we use all of these! Many Thanks
A Good-Bye Open House for Bishop Gibbs hosted by the Downriver Deanery (that’s us!) is being held on Saturday, October 19, from 4-8 p.m. RSVP by clicking this link: tinyurl.com/gibbs-open-house

🎵 🎶 🎶 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
“Canto de Esperanza” Written in 1984 by Alvin L. Schutmaat, a PC(USA) missionary to Latin America, this joyful hymn set to a traditional Argentine folk melody, inspires us to be hopeful and work for peace and justice in the world. Bringing in images of light and darkness, the hymn references John 8:12, “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’” This is a reminder of Jesus’ promise to us to never leave us in the dark, but instead, offer us eternal life. The hymn also alludes to Romans 15:13, which states, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” This gives us the opening phrase and sets up the idea of hope—a hope that supports and encourages Christians to strive for justice. This theme is also supported in Isaiah 51:4, “Listen to me, my people, and give heed to me, my nation; for a teaching will go out from me, and my justice for a light to the peoples.” The author and translator, Alvin L. Schutmaat (1921-1986), was born in Michigan and was appointed by the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) as a missionary to South America. There he taught theology and music in Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico and worked as an educator, theologian and, on occasion, a hymn writer. This increasingly popular hymn is now found in over 11 hymnals in the USA.
