The Names of Those Who Have Died since last All Saints Day are being collected. Please send the names to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net so they can be listed and read in our All Saints Sunday services. Time will also be made for you to honor those others who you love who have passed into God’s closer presence.
Wear White Next Sunday to get into the spirit of All Saints Sunday. (Of course clothes of every color are also appropriate!) At the service we will remember those who have gone before us, celebrate baptisms, hear a children’s sermon, and gather in an optional remembrance service in our memorial garden just following the main liturgy.
The Potato Fundraiser / Ireland Presentation went great on Monday. Thank you to everyone who made it a success! For those who have asked, Fr. Phil’s Irish Bread recipe can be found later in today’s Good News Weekly. Some of the ingredients are uncommon, but once you buy them you’ve got 5-10 great loafs of Irish bread waiting in your future. Sláinte!
A Bonfire is Planned For This Friday, November 1st. Sponsored by the Men’s Ministry, the fire is planned for our firepit beginning at 7pm. We have hay bales, chairs, and wood. Bring refreshments of your choice! Come and enjoy the All Saints evening with family and friends.
A Kid’s Halloween Party is planned for all children on Saturday morning, November 2, from 10–noon in Galloway Hall. Come in costume, as you like!
November 3 is a Kids Sunday to include a children’s sermon and special roles for children. Kids are welcome to wear their appropriate Halloween costumes to church, too. No Sunday School will be held on this day so families can be together for the whole service.
The Saint James Sunrise is a weekly email that includes all the upcoming Sunday’s announcements, serving schedules, and more. To be added to the Sunrise List, send a request to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net and we’ll be sure you are added.
Two clergy who served Saint James have recently passed. The Rev. Robert (Bob) Andrews was interred in our memorial garden on Saturday, October 12, in a small family ceremony. The Rev. William (Bill) Evans, who served as an assistant at St. James from 1975-1980, passed away on Saturday, October 19th. He will be interred out of state. Fr. Phil has a copy of the Eulogy to share, as you like. May they rest in peace.

🎵 🎶 🎶 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
Our next program as part of the St. James Music Series 2019-2020 will be on Saturday, November 2 at 7:00 in the chapel and features “The Music of Dave Martin.” Dave Martin is a Downriver Detroit songwriter, multi-instrumentalist,, and music educator. Dave will present an evening of intimate acoustic music in St. James’ beautiful chapel. Selections will include original worship music he’s written for the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church Band, as well as other songs about love, loss, belief, connection, joy, and redemption.
About the Anthem. This well-known text is yet another example of English Hymnody. Scripture References: all st. = John 6:37 At the age of 32, Charlotte Elliott (b. Clapham, London, England, 1789; d. Brighton, East Sussex, England, 1871) suffered a serious illness that left her a semi-invalid for the rest of her life. Within a year she went through a spiritual crisis and confessed to the Swiss evangelist Henri A. Cesar Malan (PHH 288) that she did not know how to come to Christ. He answered, “Come to him just as you are.” Thinking back on that experience twelve years later, in 1834, she wrote “Just as I Am” as a statement of her faith. Hymn writing provided a way for Elliot to cope with her pain and depression – she wrote approximately 150 hymns, which were published in her Invalid’s Hymn Book (several editions, 1834-1854), Hymns for a Week (1839), and Thoughts in Verse on Sacred Subjects (1869). Many of her hymns reflect her chronic pain and illness but also reveal that faith gave her perseverance and hope. “Just as I Am” was first published in the 1836 edition of Invalid’s Hymn Book with the subheading “Him that cometh unto me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37). She added a seventh stanza that same year, when the hymn was also published in her Hours of Sorrow Cheered and Comforted (1836). The Psalter Hymnal prints the four most common stanzas. Widely translated, this hymn has brought consolation to millions.
An Invitation for all pianists and instrumentalists… If you would like to play one or more selections during the 10:00 A.M. worship service, please speak with our Minister of Music Jim Johnson. As an inviting and inclusive community of worshipers, we want to give those with musical gifts the opportunity to participate in worship in such a way.
