People who are mourning don’t always get to do so in the midst of all the high expectation of universal Christmas cheer. In this service we will mark the longest night of the year — the day with the greatest darkness. Space will be made for grief and remembrance. We will also remember that even after the longest night day breaks. All are welcome.

An Online Pledge Card is available at saintjamesgi.net/bless

A Prayer Shawl/Blanket Ministry is now ongoing. The blankets and shawls are handmade by women from St. James and are blessed by Fr. Phil for the congregation to give to any loved one, neighbor, etc. that they feel would benefit from healing prayers.  The blankets and shawls are a physical comfort while the prayers bestowed on them offer spiritual comfort as well.  The blankets and shawls are in gift bags and are located on the top shelf of the coat rack by the office.  There is a folder that has a log in it for you to place the name of the person you will be giving it to as well as your name as the giver.  Please do not include addresses or phone numbers, just the names.  This will be a continuing ministry, so if we run out, be assured more are in the process of being made!  If you can knit, crochet, sew, or just tie a knot, and you would like to participate in making them, please contact Sharon

Gift Cards Donate Money To The Church. It is November and the Holiday Season is officially under way. That means it is time to shop for your favorite people. Avoid the stress. Order gift cards through the church and a portion of your order goes to support Saint James. All your favorite stores are offered: dining, entertainment, gas and auto, electronics and office, health and beauty, home improvement, clothing and accessories, sporting goods, etc. An information/order form can be found on the resource table outside of the main office. Complete the order form and give your check (payable to St. James Scrip) to Colleen in the office or to Lynn Blanks.  Thank you for supporting Saint James -Lynn

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Upcoming Event:   Saturday, December 14, 2019  7:00 P.M. in the main church.   “The Herman Flute Choir Christmas Special”  This program is directed by Colleen Herman and features her students.  The audience will enjoy the opportunity to sing well loved carols and more!

Come, We That Love the Lord    Scholars often ascribe the title “Father of English hymnody” to Isaac Watts (1674-1738). Though this title is exceptional, it is not undeserved. Watts was raised in the Independent Congregational Church, part of the dissenters tolerated under the official Church of England (Anglican). From an early age, he showed his dissatisfaction for the established common practice of metrical psalms, the strict poetic versification of the psalms for congregational singing in worship. He pioneered a newer approach by composing hymns that “Christianized” the texts of the Psalter. Even though “Come, we that love the Lord” is not based on a psalm, it still follows Watts’ practice of adapting Scripture for use as dev otional poetry.  The original hymn, “Come, we that love the Lord,” can be found in Watts’ Hymns and Spiritual Songs, Book II (1707) in ten, four-line stanzas entitled “Heavenly Joy on Earth.” Because he loved it so much, John Wesley later used it as a part of his Psalms and Hymns, ‘Charlestown’ Collection (1737) – the first hymnal published in America during the Wesleys’ trip to the colony – with a revised structure of eight-line stanzas, omitting stanzas two and nine. Since then, many alternations have been made according to current editorial needs, culminating with most modern hymnals using a four-line, four-stanza version, as well as a further altered setting by gospel song writer Robert Lowry (1826-1899) with an added refrain. It is important to note the change from ‘Ye’ (original) to ‘We’ (modern) in the first line of the hymn. This was a revision made first in the 1983 British Methodist hymnal Hymns and Psalms to modernize the text, making it more applicable to a new generation.

SPIRIT OF HOPE “THANKSGIVING” MEAL COMING UP TOMORROW, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2019

Candy Poppers were made by lots of kids and parents after church last Sunday! These will be treats for our Soup Kitchen “Thanksgiving Meal”  on this coming Saturday, November 16th!  We had an excellent turn out with helpers and supplies! Thanks to all of you and to the kids at Meridian Elementary, we had tons of candy to wrap for the poppers!!  Karen Brock delivered the heavy boxes from the school and you brought lots of left-over Halloween candy to the box at church. It looks to me like enough poppers were made for our “Thanksgiving meal” this coming Saturday, November 16, as well as for the “Christmas Meal” to be prepared and served by our partners, Sacred Heart Catholic Church on the third Saturday in December!  Of course we will know for sure if there are enough poppers for both meals after we serve this Saturday!

REMINDER:  This Saturday, (Nov, !6) we will meet in our Chapel Parking lot at 8:20 a.m. to pack the cars with food and supplies and then carpool downtown to the Spirit of Hope Church Soup Kitchen for the first shift for our “Thanksgiving meal”, We should arrive by 9:15 to prepare the meal.  That shift will be on your way home by 11;00 if you are not staying to serve the meal.

**Don’t forget to bring your volunteered roasted & sliced turkey with you if you have not already left it in the refrigerator in the church kitchen or in the soup kitchen freezer in the back room at church

The second shift to serve this meal should arrive downtown by 11:30 a.m.

There has been a misprint about the time that you will be finished with the second shift of serving the meal this Saturday…

TO serve, this Saturday, you should arrive at the Spirit of Hope by 11:30 a,m,

AS ALWAYS…You will be finished and on your way home on or before 1:45 p.m.  Thank you so very much for all your help!  Amy & Frank Kohair

P.S. If it turns out that we need more candy poppers for the “Christmas Meal” at Spirit of Hope to be Prepared & Served by our partners Sacred Heart Catholic Church on the third Saturday in December; Joni Bohl will organize another workshop to make more on another Sunday.  We have all the supplies we need to make more!

May God bless you All.  Any questions, please call or text: Amy Kohair 734-693-0694 or Frank Kohair 734-693-5904

Thanksgiving Dinner at 4:00pm at St. James…, We fondly remember the days when Thanksgiving dinner was a huge beautiful celebration where we were surrounded by the love of our whole big family including Grandparents, Mom & Dad, Aunts & Uncles, cousins, brothers, sisters, babies, husbands, wives, boyfriends & girlfriends, and old friends. The aromas of family favorite dishes were the stuff of dreams, weren’t they?  Would you like to relive those sweet memories with us?  We would love to have you join us!  Nothing could make us happier!  There is a sign-up RSVP sheet in Galloway Hall on the table in the middle of the room; if you would like to join the party!  All you need to bring is a dish to pass.  It should be something that stirs your best memories of your family favorites!

We already have two turkeys and fixings for stuffing.  If you think we need more turkey, you could roast a breast if you’d like.  Our family favorite sides are rutabega (try it, you might like it) and homemade mince tarts!  There will be one buffett just for strict vegetarians (no eggs or ingredients with faces, please)  and another buffett for your other yummy dishes so that everyone is happy!   YES, you can also bring friends!

After dinner, the fun is your choice:

We can clean up together with our super speedy dishwasher and then:

Just chat and relax,

or play games: Cards, Spoons, UNO, Greed, maybe Scrabble?

We sure hope you will join us in this trip through time with love to share and smiles to spare!

With All Our Love, Amy & Frank Kohair & Family
