Children interested in being in the Christmas Pageant on Christmas Eve, (silent or speaking parts), will meet Dec. 15th and Dec. 22nd after the 10 o’clock serve, during coffee hour to rehearse. Please contact Thomas Benson with any questions or to volunteer: thomas.b.benson@gmail.com
Give The Gift Of Coffee! For One Day Only! Please see News & Updates for details.
Men’s Ministry Coat Drive The Men’s Ministry Group is once again sponsoring a Winter Coat and Clothing Drive for the Spirit of Hope community. Men’s coats and jackets, sweaters, scarves, gloves and mittens are all needed and deeply appreciated. Bring your donations to Church on Sunday December 15 and 22. Women’s coats will also be accepted and you are always welcome to purchase something new if you don’t have anything used to donate. Thanks, as always for your continued support and generosity!
Some of us are planning to carpool to The Salzedo Duo concert in Perrysburg, Ohio on Saturday, December 21, and there is room for one more — do you want to go?! Actually, there is room for as many of you who would like to join us! LOL We plan to leave the St. James parking lot no later than 5:30, which should get us to St Timothy‘s Episcopal Church in Perrysburg around 6:30, giving us enough time to use the restrooms and to find good seats for the concert.
Kate and David have attended St. Tim’s Discovers music programs in the past and they have always been worth the price of admission — there is no charge. A free will offering is appreciated to help pay for the costs of the music programs, but it is not expected. Let David Hartwell know if you want to go. dhartwell4@yahoo.com / 313 318-9009 cell and text

A Special 5th Sunday ‘New Year’s’ Breakfast will be served after the 10 o’clock service on Sunday, December 29. Look for more details in the News & Updates section
The New Year is almost here, and so are the “Read the Bible” handouts! You can “read the Bible” in a year and find encouragement, hope, life instructions, great stories, history, and help of all kinds, within its covers. The handout will be located on the resource table across from the office, and will help you along your journey.
CHRISTMAS SERVICES:
Sunday, Dec 22 @ 5 p.m. – Blue Christmas (see below)
Tuesday, Dec 24 @ 4 p.m. – Pageant Service with Communion
Tuesday, Dec 24 @ 11 p.m. – Festival Service with Brass (Carols @ 10:30)
Wednesday, Dec 25 @ 10 a.m. – Christmas Day Service in Chapel
Our Longest Night Service (“Blue Christmas”) will be held in our historic chapel on Sunday, December 22, at 5pm. In the midst of all the high expectation of Christmas cheer people who are mourning feel a lot of pressure. Not in this service. As we mark the longest night of the year, the day of the greatest darkness, we make space for grief and remembrance.

Send your question to rector@saintjamesgi.net or slide it under Fr. Phil’s church office door and we’ll address your question in a January sermon.
An Online Pledge Card is available now at www.saintjamesgi.net/bless1
Nursery Care is available every Sunday from 9:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

Sunday Bible Study An open, drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday in the Fireplace Room at 9 a.m. It requires no prep. Try it out this Sunday!
Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

THE SAINT JAMES WISH LIST
Listed below are some things that St. James would love to have, but the budget does not allow them at this time. If one of these items speaks to your heart, please make a donation toward the purchase. All partial gifts will be gratefully accepted and put toward the total cost. Also, if you see or think of something that should be on this list, please let us know at goodnews@saintjamesgi.net!
- Do you have an item for the Wish List? Please speak to a Vestry member or Fr. Phil to have your wish listed here!
🎵 🎶 🎶 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
Above all, tell others about the music at Saint James. Invite someone to church and the programs we offer.
Christmas with the Choir! If you can’t make a commitment to sing on a regular basis throughout the year but would like to sing with us during the Christmas Season, please speak with Jim Johnson today!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! Many thanks to Colleen Herman and her students for providing the delightful concert last night! We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Wendy Kiblawi and Hollie Hooper-Yan for organizing the time of fellowship after the program.
Upcoming Event: Saturday, January 18, 2020 7:00 P.M. in the chapel. “Music of Change” The Grosse Ile Wind Quartet presents a program of music important to the civil rights movement and more. This program is especially meaningful as it follows the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Sunday, January 19, 2020 10:00 in the Main Church “Music of Change The choir presents two significant musical offerings on this day from two separate Bach Cantatas – “The Only Son From Heaven,” which is the closing chorale from BWV 22 and is appropriate to the Gospel for that day, and the familiar “Jesu bleibet meine Freude” (Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring” which is also the closing chorale from BWV 147. We will have guest musicians to appropriately accompany these two works. If you would like to sponsor the cost of the musicians as a thank-offering or memorial, please speak with Jim Johnson.

The ECW is taking orders this Sunday only, December 15, for Christmas Blend coffee packaged in 1/2 lb and 1 lb holiday gift bags with a special Christmas label. Coffee makes the perfect stocking stuffer or hostess gift at Christmas.
Each small batch of coffee is medium roasted, creating a classic, well balanced gourmet coffee that has an invigorating aroma. A blend of Central and South American coffees brew into a smooth cup that is rich with the flavor of 100% Arabica beans.
Place your order and pay for it on Sunday, December 15, and pick up your coffee the next Sunday, December 22. Each 1/2 lb bag will cost $6, and each 1 lb bag will cost $12. Your coffee order will be called in on Monday, roasted by Tuesday, shipped by Wednesday, and received by Friday or Saturday.
The coffee is fresh, the price is nice, and you will be helping the Episcopal Church Women of Saint James. Holiday gift giving doesn’t get any easier, or better than this.
Ho Ho Ho! Contact David Hartwell (cell 313 318-9009).
Greens market 2019
We enjoyed delicious lunches, as always, every day during Greens Market week! Monday’s chicken dinner was provided by Nancy Crysler, along with jello from Judy Christie. Twenty-seven were served lunch, with leftovers for 10 in the evening. Tuesday’s chicken salad soup was provided by Charlotte Compeau and served 38 for lunch and 15 for dinner. On Wednesday, we had sloppy joes and chips from Fr. Phil and Libby and Libby’s mother, Barbara Klemens. Fifty people were here for lunch and 18 more for dinner. Colleen Lough made mostaccioli, Linda Kurth made salad and we had more jello from Judy. Forty people enjoyed lunch and ten had dinner. Friday was Mexican day, with enchilada casserole, tacos and nachos, and corn bread from Sue Weston, along with more of Linda’s salad and Judy’s jello. Saturday was leftover day, with the addition of a tuna-macaroni salad from Norma Smereka. Liz Hartley was, as always, a great help every day!
Amazing food every day – a huge thank you to everyone who contributed or helped! Sue Weston and Norma Smereka
