BAPTISMS ARE INVITED on the Sunday of All Saints, celebrated on the first Sunday after November 1, this year: November 5. Speak to Fr. Phil if you would like to know more about Baptism. The next traditional date for Baptism will be the first Sunday after January 6, which celebrates Jesus’ own baptism.

ACOLYTES NEEDED: Dear kids and teens, we need your help as acolytes in our 10am service. Come to an organizational meeting on Sunday, November 12, right after the 10am service and we’ll do a training and develop a schedule for the next few months. Older kids will carry the cross as crucifers. Younger kids will carry the torches. High school students may also be lay readers and Eucharistic ministers. Thank you for your help – it makes a huge difference when you’re here. Also be sure to come to the meeting to meet our new Acolyte Leader, Jim Holubka!

FEEDING HUNGRY CHILDREN AT HOME  Saint James is partnering with Grosse Ile Schools on a service project to help with childhood hunger on weekends.  Our goal is to collect and distribute food for hungry students (identified by the Principals and anonymous to us). To do this we will supply students with nourishing, individually-packaged food. If you would like to donate food, suggested items are: peanut butter, jelly, microwave soup containers, mac & cheese individual containers, cereal, oatmeal in packets, 100% juice boxes, individual milk boxes, applesauce cups, fruit cups, granola bars, chicken salad packets, or anything else you can think of that is individually packaged.
If you are willing to donate, please donate at least 6 of the same product so that all 6 students receive the same items. A donation basket will be located in the hallway outside of the office (you can also drop off items in the small kitchen area).  We are also asking for donations of fresh fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, etc. and loaves of bread) to be dropped off either Thursday or early Friday morning.
We will be assembling our “Fill Up Friday” packages at Saint James on Friday mornings at 10 am in the small kitchen. Those packages will then be brought to the schools. Please come and help! As we continue through the school year, more students could be added to our list.  We welcome all volunteers! For more information, feel free to contact Mary Ann Danville (mdanville1@comcast.net)

ARE YOU CRAVING A KRINGLE?  The Men’s Group is hosting its second Kringle fundraiser — pastries of “fruits and nuts”, as well as specialty pastries of chocolate, cinnamon, and cheesecake, with and without fruits — 12 delicious “flavors” to choose from. Order now for delivery by the Christmas holiday. $12 each. Reach out to David Hartwell, Burdette Milkins, Peter Jett to place your order. Proceeds from the Kringles sale will benefit the Friday Fill-Up Backpack project that benefits Grosse Ile schools children in need of access to food on the weekends.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR Saturday Dec. 23rd at 7pm and come to the chapel to see the Men’s Groups own Mark McPherson transformed in character as Charles Dickens in a short two-act performance. There’s no cost of admission however we endorse free-will cash donations to benefit the Friday Fill-Up Backpack project that benefits Grosse Ile schools children in need of access to food on the weekends.

BONUS BONFIRE! The St. James men’s group invites you to another bonfire at the fire ring behind the church on Friday, Oct 27 at 6:30pm (weather permitting). Bring a lawn chair and a snack and/or beverage.  There will be sing-alongs and games!  This is a family-friendly bonfire.

THE STEEPLE CHASERS “LETS ROCK” ROADTRIP…..to Tiffin, Ohio is set for Sat, Nov 4. In the evening we’ll go to the historic 1928 Ritz Theatre to hear the “Hit Men” (each of the 5 band members played in some of rock’s most iconic bands). We will spend the night at a local hotel and on Sunday morning attend the 10 o’clock service at Old Trinity Episcopal Church. David Hartwell blocked 20 $40 tickets for The Hit Men rock concert at The Ritz Theatre.

BOAR’S HEAD TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE and going fast! Find them at boarsheadgi.com for performances on December 7, 8, 9, 10. The Grosse Ile Boar’s Head Festival is a 400-person community event with full orchestra, an original score, a choir of 40-50, and many moving moments. It begins in a medieval community where the slaying of the boar represents Christ’s victory over sin and death. It then transforms into a full-blown Christmas pageant that envelops you in the story of Christ’s birth. Featuring Mary, Joseph, Herod, Rachel, Kings, Shepherds, Angels and more, this is a once-every-four-years production that you don’t want to miss! Volunteer roles, costumed and behind the scenes, are still available. Sign up at https://bit.ly/bhvolunteer23 and they’ll reach out.

THE NAMES OF LOVED ONES WHO HAVE DIED IN 2023 will be read aloud in the All Saints Service on November 5. Please send the names of those who have died this year to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net.

Featuring Jordan Schug on cello, Dave Martin on guitar, Godfrey Porter on bass, Jason Cassell on drums and Doug Scott on piano, the band covers a wide range of genres from a large variety of composers. The band is joined by Grosse Ile High School’s new band director – Elise Berner. Elise is a recent graduate of the Michigan State University jazz program.
