Holy Baptism Sunday!

WELCOMED IN BAPTISM – At today’s 10AM service we welcome Christian and Raelyn into the baptized life, grandchildren of Diane and Randy Mammo. Congratulations!

RECEPTION, REAFFIRMATION, AND CONFIRMATION are led by a bishop in the Episcopal Church. On Saturday, May 11, Bishop Bonnie will be with us for a diocesan service focused on these three things. To be RECEIVED into the Episcopal Church from another denomination or no denomination, to RENEW your Christian faith, or to be CONFIRMED as an adult in the church if you were baptized as an infant, speak to Fr. Phil. He will be offering a short series of preparatory classes.

HELP THE HOMELESS on Monday, January 22, at Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church. All the Island Churches unite to staff the ChristNet warming shelter every winter. Look on the hallway bulletin board for open slots to sign up to help. Sue Lowery, Interfaith Council Rep, 734-771-2503.

THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE PARISH is a celebration of our year together and prep for the year ahead! Scheduled for Sunday, January 28, at 11am in Galloway Hall, come and see all that we have accomplished. We will also elect officers and bestow the Alice Award, so don’t miss it!

THE BLACK PLASTIC by the back parking lot is Phase I of a several-phase “Re-nature-ification Project” approved by the Vestry last summer. Once the sun-blocking plastic has killed the grass (mid-Spring), we will seed native species of flowering plants in that area. In the first year it may look rough, since many wildflowers take several years to get established. Taking the long view, after 2-4 years we should have a thriving ecosystem of wildflowers that are good for Grosse Ile and  beautiful to behold. And if not, we’ll plant some nice grass! Watching the process should be fun and educational—keep an eye on this space.

CHURCH MOVIE NIGHT! On Tuesday, January 23, we’ll meet at Emagine in Woodhaven at 6:45 p.m. to watch a 7PM movie featuring a prominent Episcopalian. The Most Rev. Michael Curry became internationally famous in 2018 for preaching about LOVE at the Wedding Sermon of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. He is now featured as the keynoter in a documentary movie showing called “A Case for Love” which speaks to people across the country about the power and importance of selfless love. Bishop Curry pulls it all together. Showing one night only, come and join with Fr. Phil and fellow Episcopalians as we consider a case for love.

A CELEBRATION OF ABSALOM JONES will be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral on Saturday, February 3, at 4pm. Absalom was the first African-American person ordained in the Episcopal Church. All are welcome!

HEAR FROM A RABBI AND AN IMAM about the current situation in the Middle East by joining a 3-week diocesan class on Zoom that runs from 7:30-9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, January 16, 23, and 30. Each week will feature a speaker who will give a short presentation and then answer questions, followed by discussion. Sign up to get the Zoom link at http://tiny.cc/ixezvz

A NEW BOOK CLUB TIME is planned for the next six weeks. Beginning immediately we will meet on Thursday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. The book is awesome! Pick up your own copy of “What we talk about when we talk about God” by Rob Bell, and read Chapter 2 for this week’s discussion.

ALL WOMEN of the congregation are welcome to attend a general ECW meeting on Sun, Jan. 21, 2024 at 11:15 a.m. in the Fireplace Room.

BARBARA MASSEY (a former parishioner and organist at Saint James) entered the larger life this week. A requiem mass will be said for her at “Our Lady of the Scapular” in Wyandotte on Saturday, February 17, time TBA. An interment at Saint James and a memorial organ recital are also planned for that day.

A FEW ST. JAMES 8 O’CLOCKERS STARTED A CHOIR last fall and chose the name Chapel Choir.  We approached Fr. Phil and Jim Johnson with our idea that we would like to sing a hymn every so often during a church service.  It was agreed that we would practice at home while watching videos of the hymn.  Next Sunday, January 21, the Chapel Choir will be singing our first hymn in 2024, and we invite you to come to the 8 o’clock service.  The hymn that we will be singing as the offertory hymn is a familiar one, “To God Be the Glory”, and it will have “parts” for the Choir and the congregation.  We hope to see you and will save you a pew! If you enjoy singing and would like to learn more about the Chapel Choir, we have an operator standing by to take your call — David Hartwell 313 318-9009 cell / text!

A SEMINAR ON WHITE NATIONALISM, led by leaders in the Episcopal Church will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3.  The seminar will examine the historical, theological, and biblical underpinnings of White Christian Nationalism and explore practical, pastoral and prophetic responses to it. Guest speakers include biblical scholar and theologian Walter Brueggemann and New York Times bestselling authors Kristin Du Mez and Jemar Tisby. Cost is $20. Register online at http://tiny.cc/81fzvz

“THE LIFE OF CHRIST” is the focus of our Saturday morning discussion group beginning Saturday, February 3rd at 9:30am in the church library across from the office. Each week the group will look at a different aspect of Jesus’ life. Pat Zavadil has led this group many times to rave reviews. Come and be a part of this introduction to the life of Jesus Christ. The goal is to open doors that will help you learn who He was and is, so that you may follow Him as well as those who knew Him face to face.

A COMIC BOOK “BIBLE STUDY” FOR ADULTS Fr. Phil is planning an “Action Bible” study group that will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-6:50pm in the Church library. The “Action Bible” is the whole Bible presented in a comic book style, allowing you to cover lots of ground in a short period of time with great visuals. This study will help you hold the whole Biblical story in your mind at once. Sign-up for the first class on the magnetic bulletin board by the front doors. A handout of the first week’s reading can be found on the Resource Table.

A SUNDAY MORNING 9AM BIBLE STUDY begins on February 11 and will run during the season of Lent this year. Fr. Phil will lead this study in the Fireplace Room from 9:00-9:50 a.m., focusing on the Book of Ephesians. You do not need to know about the Bible to come! Also, you do not need to plan ahead. Each week we will read a full chapter aloud, then discuss what occurs to us. Commit to the whole 6-week study, or just come when you can.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT DARTBALL IS? Kate and David Hartwell are interested in bringing the game of dartball to Saint James and Grosse Ile.  On Monday, January 29th we have been invited by East Ida Immanuel Lutheran Church / 6272 W. Albain Road, Monroe to see the church’s dartball team practice at 7 pm and watch them play three league games against a team from another Lutheran church at 7:30 pm.  There will be refreshments served, including Susan “Susie” Siebarth’s “to die for” Turtle Cake!  We plan to carpool from Saint James at 6 pm.  Call or text David Hartwell at 313 318-9009 to RSVP, or if you have any questions.

HANDY CRAFTERS are off to a fresh start and ready to welcome you!  If you knit, crochet, embroider, etc., any portable hand craft, join us.  Tuesdays 1-3 at Mary Shelton’ home. 8187 Grays Dr B1.  Jan. dates are 1/9 and 1/23.  Maybe you’ll find some new friends ready to chat as we stitch. Call or Text Mary for directions, questions or to reserve a chair. Mary Shelton 734-215-5133
