A “Dickens” of a time for our Furry Friends
On Sunday, Dec. 21 at 4pm Saint James will once again host the traditional Christmas “Meet Mr. Dickens” show in our historic chapel, featuring Mark McPherson as the fabled author of “The Christmas Carol.” There will be music, art, poetry, drama, carol singing, and a chance to say “thanks” to Grosse Ile’s Animal Shelter and its T.A.I.L.S. support group. Adding to the festivities will be Larry Crabtree on the Chapel organ, Barry VanEngelen and Father Phil strumming Yuletide favorites, Bruce Luckock dramatically reading, an “early visit” by Father Christmas (aka Rob Speer), and musical and dramatic fun from the island’s own artist-in-residence, Mike Mullen. Of course there be the “Inimitable” himself, presented by Mark, as the legendary author explains holiday customs and the motivation behind his Christmas classic involving old Mr. Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and of course, those famous ghosts!
A free English Tea will be provided at intermission, as will an exhibition of Mike Mullen’s latest art works, including graphics recently created from his 1891 vintage Victorian printing press. All proceeds via a Free Will Offering at the show will benefit our Island League Shelter. So come out December 21 and have a “Dickens” of a time – fun for everyone – bring the whole family!
1st Annual Thanks+Giving Fun Run a Success!
Thanksgiving morning the ringing of St. James’ Chapel bell sent off over 150 racers on the 1st Annual Thanks + Giving Fun Run. In keeping with the festive spirit, volunteers not only made sure that our runners had the proper hydration at the water station, but also handed out Christmas cookies and candy canes along the race route!
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the kids dash and 5K received pumpkin pies as awards in addition to the handcrafted wishbone bracelets all runners and walkers were given.
Over $1,500 was raised to support the Sacred Heart food pantry, the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen in Detroit and St. James’ ministries.
Inter-Faith Council
In mid-November our community housed and fed 28 homeless people involved in the ChristNet program. The Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church provided the shelter and members of all Grosse Ile churches participated by making and serving food, staffing the program, doing laundry and listening to the needs of our guests. Thank you to all members of St. James who volunteered to help. Your time and loving concern was much appreciated. Thank you also, to all who prayed for our guests and those who served them.
Blessings, Sue and Jane
