Classic Movie Night Saturday May 16th at 6:30pm  Join us for your choice of movie!  In the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany´s (NR) struggling writer Paul Varjak moves into a New York apartment building and becomes intrigued by his pretty, quirky neighbor Holly Golightly. Holly’s lifestyle confuses and fascinates Paul; in public she flits through parties with a sexy, sophisticated air, but when they’re alone she changes into a sweetly vulnerable bundle of neuroses. Come join us for this film about how love can surprise us and transform us, featuring one of classic Hollywood’s most loved icons, Audrey Hepburn. In 1939’s The Wizard of Oz  (G) we´re off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz! Judy Garland, as Dorothy Gale, swept out of her native Kansas by a tornado, sets off on a journey through the magical land of Oz to see the Wizard and ask him to get her home. Along the way she faces the attacks of the Wicked Witch of the West, and helps her friends the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion look for their heart, smarts and courage. Come and enjoy –again or for the first time – the beautiful and song-filled tale of Dorothy and her friends’ journey to find their heart´s desire.

An interesting historical record of the Episcopal presence on Grosse Ile was found in our archives. We’ll present this 5 page document in a series through upcoming Good News Weeklies.  Here is PART 1

ANTECEDENTS OF ST. JAMES’ CHURCH

GROSSE ILE, MICHIGAN

“Apostle’s Isle”

Colloquial term often used in the 1840’s and 1850’s because of the number of clergymen in summer residence on Grosse Ile.

The Diocese of Michigan organized in 1832.  In 1835 the Rev. W. N. Lyster, one of the orgainzers [sic] of the Diocese, held the first religious services on Grosse Ile.

Parish of Mongaugen

Grosse Ile then a portion, so of this parish.  Services held in Trenton in 1843 by The Rev. Charles Fox, appointed Missionary Priest.

St. John’s Church

The Rev. Charles Fox resigned as Missionary Priest and in 1850 built his own church, St. John’s, on Grosse Ile – at what is now the southwest corner of Church Road and West River Road.  Services attended mainly by the “Westsiders.” Services held there intermittently until 1924.  Building was never consecrated.  Finally torn down in 1930.
