Today is Youth Sunday! Our children and youth will join us all morning, serving in all the roles of the church.

Our Halloween Party Will Begin Directly After the 10am service on Sunday, October 25th (note the time change). Children are welcome to wear their costumes to church.  We will have lunch, games, a craft AND a Goodie Walk.  We are in need of plates of cupcakes or cookies for the walk.  Please contact Patricia Saavedra at 734-552-8643 with any questions!

Thank You to Erica Chappuis whose artwork has graced the cover of the ECW Blue Book for the last two years.

The Heart’s Journey Through the Seasons is a wonderful interfaith opportunity for reflection and rediscovering God’s presence in our lives. This series is inspired by the book, The Circle of Life: The Heart’s Journey through the Seasons by Joyce Rupp & Marina Wiedrkehr. It is led by Sr. Betty Leon, IHM and is open to all interested adults. The first gathering for autumn will be on Tuesday morning, October 20th from 9:30-11:00am at Sacred Heart Church Parish Center, Room B.  The program will be repeated on Thursday evening October 22nd from 7:00-8:30pm. For more info call Amy Kohair 734-693-0694 or Kate Hartwell at 313-318-3275

Update From The Drake Family:  Last February many of you contributed to a baked potato bar fundraiser to help us become guardians of Julius, an 11 year old boy from Nevada (Jennifer’s distant cousin).   Each time we got close to working it out there was a huge obstacle.  We would wait, pray, and try again.  Well God had a plan in His own time and the story has a happy ending.  Julius turned 12 last month.  A wonderful family came to visit him at his birthday party and immediately began making arrangements.  He moved into his new home Oct 3rd.  We are thrilled that this opportunity opened up for him.  We want to thank you all for your generosity.  It was a huge relief knowing that the funds were available if we needed them.  Now it can go toward another family who has a need. Thanks again for your love and support!

Baptisms Will Be Celebrated Sunday, Nov 1st, All Saint’s Sunday. To inquire about a baptism, speak to Fr. Phil or call the church office.

The Planning For the Historic Greens Market Has Begun! We need all sizes and shapes of pine cones.  If you have any please bring them to the church now so they can be wired.  I am requesting if any of you need to trim your evergreen bushes or trees could you please wait until Thanksgiving week and then bring your branches to the church so they can be used for the Greens Market.  This will give us local, fresh greens.  We need branches of boxwood (this is in short supply because of last year’s very cold winter), juniper, cedar, white and red pine, balsam, Douglas fir, holly and branches of evergreens.  If you have any questions please call me at 734-671-1831.  Thank you in advance, Collie

If Feet Could Talk Sock Ministry is now collecting socks. Do you still have good, usable, extra socks in your drawer at home that you forgot to bag up for rummage? Bring them to church for our St. James Sock Drive! Two barrels, one by the chapel and one by the main church entrance, are open for your donations…for both new and gently used socks. As winter winds approach we will also need help delivering the socks to Detroit homeless shelters and those individuals begging on corners that we frequently pass.

The Search For A Great Cup Of Coffee is happening now at Saint James.  Did you know the new coffee brewer will also be able to brew hot tea as well as iced coffee and iced tea?  Please come and try a cup.

Are You Good With Technology? Some of our homebound parishioners have requested Live-Streamed services, or on-demand copies online. Can you help?

“Turn, Turn, Turn…To Everything There Is A Season…”    As the days continue to shorten and the evenings are cooler, rejoice in the blessings that are yours. Remember your blue box!  UTO envelopes are also available for cash and checks made out to “St. James ECW”.  The ingathering of our UTO offerings will be on November 8th.  Thank you in advance for your generosity.  Our change truly can change lives.

The  Gospel  of Thomas  is being considered at our weekly Sunday morning Bible Study. The text discovered in 1945 supposedly contains over 100 sayings of Jesus not in the New Testament. Are they genuine? 9am Sundays in the Fireplace Room.

To Turn OFF the Chapel Lights it is very important that you push-in the button on the slider; sliding the slider all the way down does not turn off the lights, but leaves them on and keeps drawing electricity. Likewise, to turn ON the lights in the chapel, push-in the button on the slider. Sliding the slider all the way up will not turn on the lights unless you first press the button.

To Unlock The Front Doors Of The Church turn the key a half turn, press down the button, then turn the key back straight and remove it. Once inside use the hex key hanging on the door frame to lock the crash-bar open. Thank you.

Coffee and Fellowship follow the 10am Service every Sunday in Galloway Hall.

Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/saintjamesgi for updates.

Fr. Phil’s Open Office Hours are every Tuesday from 4:30-6:30pm.

MUSIC NOTES

This week our hymns try to reflect and respond to the message of Christ’s life of service. Our model is the Christ who served humanity with the ultimate sacrifice in order that we might live, so we ultimately praise him for this sacrifice even as we try to follow him in humility. This is a seeming paradox that finds repose in the Christian faith: “…whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all.” Perhaps our sung words can help us enter this paradox and find a “point of repose” in our daily life in Christ.
