This double-pane of stained glass depicts the boy Jesus, who as a teen took his place in the Temple to teach, share council, and learn. Today we give thanks for our teens who likewise take their adult place at Saint James. Welcome!

HAPPY EASTER May your Great Fifty Days be joyous!

CONGRATULATIONS

To Our Confirmands  Griffin Barton, Andrew Ador Johnson, Warren Johnson, William Johnson, Abbey McNeill, Emma Rankine, Tommy Shumate, Hannah Thomas, and those who may come forward.

To Those Reaffirming Faith  Kim Faistenhammer, Stuart Cartwright, and those who may come forward.

To Those Formally Received Mel Bonis, Marylou Cartwright, Erica Chappuis, Laurent Chappuis, and those who may come forward.

This Sunday is a “Youth Sunday” in which our children have a full experience of the worship service, instead of spending the Liturgy of the Word in Sunday School. If you have children or youth in your household consider sitting up front. Being close to the action is more engaging for children and adults, alike.

OUR BISHOP JOINS US THIS SUNDAY as his triennial parish visitation. Note: Bishop Gibbs is not technically a “guest” or even a visiting dignitary. He is closely familiar with Saint James’, which he watches over from many vantage points, including through conversations with the rector, his own personal prayer, contact with parishioners, review of our parish records and visits. Nevertheless we take great pleasure to worship together with him as one community and fellowship. Please take the opportunity to greet Bishop and Karlah Gibbs, and Archdeacon Mackenzie at a special reception following Sunday’s service.

The Rainbow Bell Choir today will be ringing for our service on the 24th.  Any child wishing to join should meet Sue Johnson in the Godly Play service 5-10 minutes before worship.  All ages are welcome!  Call Sue Johnson (734-658-9125) with any questions.

Undesignated Offerings this week will go to The Bishop’s Fund, which is the discretionary fund of the bishop. By Church canon, it is reserved for “pious and charitable uses,” like Mariners Inn, and for emergency needs of individuals. To write a check, make it out to The Bishop’s Fund.

Our Annual Detroit Riverboat Cruise happens Saturday, June 11th.  The cruise will be catered this year, and will start with an optional Communion in the Park.

Holy Moments Happen Around Us Every Day –  a quiet moment at home between a parent and child, an evening of boisterous laughter with friends and family, or an encounter with God’s beautiful creation. We encourage you to open your hearts and minds to see the holiness in every day. And when you capture a holy moment on film (or rather, digitally!) send it to goodnews@gmail.com.  We’ll share them here to inspire others to see the holy in every moment.

Ladies, Mark Your Calendars For The ECW Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 15 at 5PM at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club.

A Saint James’ Clean-Up Day is scheduled for Sunday, May 15th after church. Wear work clothes to church and bring gloves, rakes, shovels, etc. Our goal is to spruce up the grounds for the sunny months that are coming. We’ll be spreading mulch and other outdoor tasks. If you prefer to help by making a simple meal for the workers, please speak to Fr. Phil or contact us in the office.

Join The Pastoral Care Committee to adopt a homebound parishioner, visiting them every week or two,  bringing a bulletin and communion. This group is also the core of the emergency prayer chain, which is activated in times of immediate need. Contact chair Marie Johnson mariewarrenj@comcast.net or Fr. Phil.

🎵 🎶 🎶🎵  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

A Weekly Series by Daniel Susan, our Minister of Music

We are the arms and legs and voice of the Church when we join in her song of faith at worship. Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes “It is not you that sings, it is the Church that is singing, and you, as a member of the Church, may share in its song.” At every Eucharist we sing what is considered the preeminent Christian hymn “Holy, Holy Lord God of power and might” and the preface, the introduction to it, has a variant, “it is our duty and delight, at all times and in all places…” – all our singing is both a duty and a delight. Hear how the great conductor Robert Shaw describes our song:

“It is the nature of music, unlike painting and most literature, that its final creation is not its original creation. Music needs to be sounded, needs to be sung. It needs to be heard. In this sense the composer literally must leave his/her work to be finished by others. Namely us. Can you imagine Michelangelo asking us to come in and help finish the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel?”

Don’t be shy. “It is not you that sings, it is the Church that is singing, and you, as a member of the Church, may share in its song.”
