As Part Of Her Priestly Discernment our own Sylvia Booth is entering Seminary this fall at Bexley-Seabury Seminary in Chicago. In her words, “I have been loved, nurtured and supported in the first steps of my discernment process by St James. I am grateful to the whole Saint James community for showing me Christ´s love in action and helping to send me out to continue carrying the Good News.” As a seminarian Sylvia will serve at Saint Michael´s and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lincoln Park as a multicultural and multilingual ministry setting. Join us next week on August 20th for Sylvia’s last Sunday with us.
A 150th Anniversary Golf Classic to benefit our Saint James chapel will be held on Tuesday, September 19th at the Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club. This is a great chance to dust off the clubs and enjoy the emerald greens of Grosse Ile with friends and family to support a great cause. Dinner-only tickets are also available. Spread the word!
Worship Outdoors during our 10am services on this Sunday, August 13, and on Sunday, September 10. If you can help set up chairs please come at 9am.
Visiting the Sick and Homebound The Pastoral Care Team and anyone interested in joining the team will meet this month on Wednesday, August 23, at 6:30pm in the library. We will look at who is visiting whom, we’ll get a refresher from Fr. Phil on administering home communion, we’ll discuss opportunities to develop this ministry, and we’ll pray for those in need.
The Chapel Vestibule needs to be kept clear for fire-safety and historical reasons. If you have anything stored in the vestibule (the entry-space between the fine doors of the chapel narthex and the outside doors), the deadline for removing things is September 1. Our Fall Rummage Sale is October 6 & October 7. Items will be accepted beginning September 18. Please wait until that date as we need access to garage, and the fire department does want us to create a fire hazard.
The Thursday Morning Book Group picks up again on Thursday, August 17 to discuss “The Book of Joy” by Desmond Tutu and the Dali Lama. Read chapter 1 for this first meeting. All are welcome in this ongoing drop-in discussion group!
Sunday Morning Bible Studies are held from 9:05-9:50 a.m. in the fireplace room. We are just beginning 1 Corinthians. Together we read a full chapter aloud and then consider what we’ve heard and what it means to the church today.
Our Dishwasher does not remove lipstick from coffee cups very well, unfortunately. Please wipe lipstick from cups before sending them to the kitchen.
A Special Song Service of OLD-TIME FAVORITES is being held at the Hickory Island Pavilion at 29820 East River Road on Sunday, August 20 at 6 pm. Our Music Minister Bobby will provide accompaniment, and afterward there will be light refreshments and conversation. The Pavilion has limited seating so be sure to RSVP on the Fellowship bulletin board in the church hallway or contact David Hartwell at dhartwell4@yahoo.com or 313 318-9009.
Belly Dance classes are held every Wednesday in Galloway Hall at 7pm.

Vestry Minutes are always available on the bulletin board outside the main office. Vestry members wear blue name tags if you have comments or questions.

We have some extra-ordinary musicians coming to Saint James this year, performing a wide variety of music from all over the world. All of the con-certs are free will offering and family friendly, and are a wonderful, informal window into the world of music. Please feel free to share with your friends!

September 16, 2017, 7:30: Short Pieces by Great Composers: A Piano Recital by Robert Ragoonanan, featuring works by C.P.E. Bach, Bartok, Schumann, and Brahms.
October 14, 2017, 7:30: The Organ in the Sanctuary: A joint recital by Robert Ragoonanan, Doug Scott, and Mary Hackstock in celebration of the refurbished and expanded Ross King Organ.
November 18, 2017, 7:30: The Western and Chinese Flute: Featuring international composer & flautist Hong-Da Chin.
December 17, 2017, 10AM: Join us for our 3rd Sunday of Advent Service, featuring choir, orchestra, and soloists presenting Haydn’s Missa Brevis in F Major.
January 20, 2018, 7:30: The Organ in the Chapel: A Recital of Baroque and Renaissance music performed by students from the U of M: Ann Arbor.
February 17, 2018, 7:30: Piano Trio Music, featuring Yi Chieh Anita Chiu, Violin and Piano, Jon Moody, Cello, and Robert Ragoonanan, Piano and Oboe.
March 17, 2018, 7:30: The BGSU Graduate String Quartet
April 1, 2018, 10AM: Join us for our Easter Service, featuring brass and 20th century choral anthems, including Alan Hovhaness’ “Alleluia”.
May 19, 2018, 7:30: Viola Recital presented by Dr. Kalindi Bellach, performing a wide variety of music from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

Choir and bell choir is starting up again very soon! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.
Choir and Bell Choir will begin meeting again on Thursday, September 7th.
This morning’s musical point of interest: With the 10am service outside, it’s a nice chance to hear some piano music for a change. Of special interest is the Beethoven during communion. The Piano Sonata No. 8 was written during a time when Beethoven knew his hearing would never return. Where the other movements of the Sonata are quite fiery, this movement is much more tender. It reflects Beethoven in a state of contemplation, and ultimately, acceptance of his condition.

August 19, 7:30PM: Our music series begins again, with a passionate program of the music of Robert and Clara Schumann! Soprano Anna Valcour and Tenor Braun Oldenkamp will perform Robert Schumann’s Liederkreis and Gedichte aus Liebesfrühling, and Clara Schumann’s Sechs Lieder.
