A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Fr.Phil getting ready for story time

during VBS this week.

Upcoming Memorial Services at Saint James include a memorial for Barry Carrigan (husband of Alice Carrigan) on Monday August 19 at 10:30am, and a memorial for Teddie Fornwalt (daughter of Scott and Laura Fornwalt) on Saturday, August 24 at 10am. Please keep their family and friends in your prayers.

ChurchFest Sunday marks the start of our program year. On Sunday, September 8th we will have a rousing 10am service followed by a church picnic on the front lawn. Bring a dish to share and bring a friend! We’ll have a bouncy house for the kids and literature about the year’s programs. It will be wonderful day of celebration. Mark your calendars!!

ChurchFEST Help is needed in two important areas: 1) Volunteers who can arrive at 9am on Sunday, September 8, to set up tables and chairs for our outdoor potluck lunch. 2) Volunteers to set up drinks that morning for 100. (Water and iced tea work great). Can you help? Tell Fr. Phil, or better yet, call or email Colleen in the office— 734-676-1727 or office@saintjamesgi.net

ECW Welcome Back Luncheon – Please join us on Sunday, September 15th at 12:00 at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club.  This event is a thank you for all your hard work.  We know that a lot of the younger ladies of the church are working hard also and we would love to have you at the luncheon.  This is a good time to relax and get to know each other better.  There are signup sheets outside the main church and also outside the chapel.  Looking forward to seeing you all.

The next Safe Church Training is scheduled for September 21 at St. Stephen’s, Wyandotte. Register here: tinyurl.com/sc-wyandotte . This training is required for all parishioners who work with children or vulnerable adults, including Sunday School teachers, Sunday School helpers, and home-visitors. Thanks to the 25 people who took this training already!

One Service of Worship is scheduled for the morning of the bishop’s visit, September 22 at 10amin compliance with the bishop’s wishes. He visits only every 3 years. Mark your calendars, it should be fun!

Baptism is scheduled for the day of the bishop’s visit, September 22. The next date for baptism after that will be November 3rd. Please contact the office if you are interested in learning more.

A Reception is Planned for the Bishop for the morning of his visit. Please bring a snack to be set out as part of a spread for that morning, if possible. (Keep in mind, with the bishop’s impending retirement this will be his last visit among us.)

Reception, Reaffirmation, and Confirmation are three things only a bishop can do. To be received into the Episcopal Church, to reaffirm (renew) your baptismal commitment to God in Christ, or to be confirmed, speak to Fr. Phil. A short but important preparation for these things is necessary.

Rummage Sale Is Coming Again Soon! The sale is October 4-5, but we cannot accept items yet. Please do not bring any rummage until Sept 16. We need to have access to our storage cabinets, tables and chairs in the garage to set up the sale. Thank you for your understanding and help.

Help Weeding A Home Garden is needed by one of our older parishioners. Can you or a teenager in your household help? The work will be paid. Call 734-341-2554 or talk to Fr. Phil to find out more.

Share the Joy of Coffee Hour  A “Coffee and Conversation” signup sheet is always on the main food table at coffee hour. Please sign up for a Sunday to prep the coffee and provide a simple snack. This would be a great help, as coffee hour is an entirely volunteer effort.

The Yellow Envelopes in the pews are for spontaneous gifts to the Capital Campaign. Fifty households pledged to our 150th Anniversary Capital campaign, but our goal is 100% participation. If you did not make a pledge, your support is still needed! Use the yellow envelopes to join the effort that is making our church safer and more sound for the generations that will follow us. Help us get to 100% support.

Offering Envelopes Are Always Available on the table across from the office. Pick them up as you need them. Please be sure to fill out the little card found in each offering box to enable our Treasurer to associate your envelope number with your household.

Service Recordings from our 8am service are at saintjamesgi.net located in the “Media” tab, and at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi

First Aid Kits are located throughout the church: 1) On the shelf under the main altar; 2) On the coat rack in the main hall by the office; 3) In the kitchen by the sink; and 4) In the chapel sacristy.

Open Bible Study  An open, drop-in Bible study is held every Sunday in the Fireplace Room from 9:05-9:50am. The study requires no prep and you can come and go. Try it out this Sunday!

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, &  Fri 9-12.

Open Office Hours Fr. Phil is available on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 and 6:30 pm for anyone to drop in without an appointment. For a meeting of 40 minutes or more, please call ahead.

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Music Note: From time to time, a hymn captures our imagination because of its simplicity and transparency. Such a hymn is “I want to walk as a child of the light.” In singing this hymn, we feel the spirit of Epiphany unfold.

Kathleen Armstrong Thomerson (b. 1934) is a native of Tennessee. She wrote the hymn during the summer of 1966 during a visit to the Church of the Redeemer in Houston, Texas, the location providing the origin for the tune name HOUSTON.

I want to walk as a child of the light” communicates deep conviction and personal sincerity, while avoiding any hint of pretence. The first person perspective invites the singer to join Christ, the Light of the World, in discipleship – a journey of faith. The second line of each stanza deepens this commitment:
Stanza 1: “I want to follow Jesus.”
Stanza 2: “I want to look at Jesus.”
Stanza 3: “I want to be with Jesus.”

The simplicity of the music and text does not imply a simplistic faith. “I want to walk as a child” reminds us of one of the paradoxes of our faith, that we need to become as a child to fully understand the realm of God (Matthew 18:2-4).

Upcoming Music Events:

Vocal Choir and bell choir is starting up again very soon! ! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays. Our first rehearsal is Thursday, September 5!
