A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Visitors from UBE (Union of Black Episcopalians) are welcomed to our  historic chapel.

A Church Picnic is planned for Sunday, September 10, following our outdoor ChurchFEST Sunday Service. We’ll have a bouncy house for the kids. Also hotdogs, hamburgers, and condiments will be provided by a generous gift. So bring a side dish to share and maybe a friend. It will be a wonderful day of celebration.  If you can help set up chairs please come at 9am.

Red Doors Fall Field Trip – September 5, 2017 – Lisette’s Canadian Life  What was life like for our founder, Lisette, after she escaped to Canada?  Historic sites in Sandwich, Amhertsburg, and Essex, Ontario will be visited, with lunch along the way.   Traveling as a group by bus will not work for this trip.  So, we will be carpooling to Canada. To make arrangements, I will need an exact count and if you are willing to drive.  Please update the list that will be in the entrance to the chapel on Sunday, August 27. There will be more details available at that time.  REMEMBER: you must have a current passport or enhanced driver’s license to enter Canada.  It’s going to be a great trip, so be sure to sign up to finalize your trip.   Kate Hartwell 313 318 3275

ECW (Episcopal Church Women) Welcome Back Luncheon will be held Sunday September 17th at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club.  All women are invited to attend!  Please sign up on the ECW bulletin board, or talk to ECW President MaryLou Cartwright (734-775-0784) for more information.

A 150th Anniversary Golf Classic to benefit our Saint James chapel will be held on Tuesday, September 19th at the Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club. This is a great chance to dust off the clubs and enjoy the emerald greens of Grosse Ile with friends and family to support a great cause. Dinner-only tickets are also available.

Seersucker Sunday?  Tradition has that after Labor Day we don’t wear white or seersucker.  On Sunday, September 3 you are invited to come to church dressed for style, or just for fun, in white or seersucker.  If you don’t have either in your closet, you might find end of summer clearance sales at area department stores or in your favorite Salvation Army or Goodwill thrift stores. This is not an official thing. Just for fun for those who want to participate.   David Hartwell

Our Fall Rummage Sale is  October 6 & October 7.  Donated items will be accepted beginning September 18.

The Pastoral Care Team Meeting Has Been Rescheduled. Anyone interested in joining the team, which visits the sick and homebound, will meet on Wednesday, September 13, at 6:30pm in the library. We will look at who is visiting whom, we’ll get a refresher from Fr. Phil on administering home communion, we’ll discuss opportunities to develop this ministry, and we’ll pray for those in need.

The Thursday Morning Book Group has resumed!  Join us Thursdays at 10:30am as we discuss “The Book of Joy” by Desmond Tutu and the Dali Lama. All are welcome in this ongoing drop-in discussion group!

Sunday Morning Bible Studies are held from 9:05-9:50 a.m. in the fireplace room. We are reading 1 Corinthians. Together we read a full chapter aloud and then consider what we’ve heard and what it means to the church today.

Our Dishwasher does not remove lipstick from coffee cups very well, unfortunately.  Please wipe lipstick from cups before sending them to the kitchen.

Belly Dance classes are held every Wednesday in Galloway Hall at 7pm.

Please Check The Coat Rack In Galloway Hall And Our Kitchen for any items that might belong to you. Unclaimed items will be sold in the next rummage sale.

Vestry Minutes are always available on the bulletin board outside the main office. Vestry members wear blue name tags if you have comments or questions.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length. Tuesday evenings are open office hours, meaning you can drop in without an appointment between 4:00-6:30 pm. Contact Fr. Phil any time: rector@saintjamesgi.net, cell: 734-775-7140 or at the office: 734-676-1727.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL—2017

70+ children attended from pre-school through 5th grades.  It was a glorious week of music, bible learning, science, crafts, games and of course the famous cornbread.  Thanks to all who contributed to create this memorable week for kids!  “It takes a village” and indeed it took a village of St. Jamers to execute Vacation Bible School 2017.

The following are the adults who helped in some way:  Erica Benson, Mel Bonis, Judy Christie, Molly Clayton, Jane Colwell, Nancy Crysler, Father Phil Dinwiddie, Libby Dinwiddie, Kim Faistenhammer, Michael Glover, Joan Hemsworth, Marie Johnson, Sue Johnson, Madeleine Jones, Elizabeth Johnson,  Wendy Kiblawi, Amy Kohair, Julie Kohn, Avery Lewis, Colleen Lough, Sue Lowery, Sharon Metz, Carol Nankervis, Amanda Phillips, Lynda VanEngelen and Tina Wirtel.

The following youth assisted:  Delaney Arndt, Elise Buhl, Sammi Bohl, Abbie Carbajo, Zoie Christie, Charlotte Glover, Madison Glover, Lauren Graver, Allie Graver, Chelsea Houghton, Grace Holliday, Warren Johnson, William Johnson, Douglas Johnson, Abbey McNeill, Jessica Roekle, Anna Shumate, Tommy Shumate, Michaela Sexton and Brooke Taylor.

PSSST…..Did you know that the very first Saint James’ Rummage Sale was held in May 1960?  The tradition of our semi-annual rummage sale is 57 years old!  Sale proceeds enable St. James to support approximately 17 different charitable organizations.  Folks from not only St. James, but from all over the downriver area volunteer whatever time they can spare to help with set-up, work week, sale days and clean up.  Does it sound like a lot of work?  It is, but every year I am amazed at how many people donate not only their rummage, but their time to assist in any way they can.  If you work full time, please consider helping with set-up (the weekend before the sale) or Saturday’s sale day and clean-up afterwards.  Hot lunches are provided at no cost to all the volunteers during the work week and on sale days.  The food is awesome but the fellowship and friendships that are created between each other are priceless!!  Sales happen every year on the first Saturday of May (and the preceding Friday) and the first Saturday of October (and the preceding Friday).  If you have any questions about our Spring or Fall Sales, please contact either Sharon Metz (cell 734-626-1650) or Carole Vandenberg.  Our next sale will be October 5 (9am-4pm) and October 6 (9am-Noon).

🎵 🎶 🎶🎵  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Choir and bell choir is starting up again very soon! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays.

Choir and Bell Choir will begin meeting again on Thursday, September 7th.

This morning’s musical point of interest: Buxtehude, Bach, and Pachelbel…it doesn’t get much more German than this! When Bach was 20, he walked over 250 miles to hear Buxtehude and to “comprehend one thing or another about his art”. Bach ended up staying in Lübeck for 3 months, learning and studying with the great master, and Bach’s compositional style was greatly influenced by Buxtehude’s methods.

Upcoming Music Events

September 16, 7:30: Join us in Galloway Hall for Short Pieces by Great Composers: A Piano Recital by Minister of Music Robert Ragoonanan. Featuring Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Bartok’s 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs, C.P.E. Bach’s Fantasia in F-sharp Minor, and Brahms’ Klavierstücke Op. 118.
