ERICA BENSON WILL BE ORDAINED  to the diaconate Sat, Nov 23 at 11am at the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul. (Following ancient practice, Episcopal priests are always ordained as deacons first, usually for 6-12 months.)

ERICA WILL SERVE HER FIRST SUNDAY AS A DEACON at Saint James on Nov 24.

EXTRA HALLOWEEN CANDY IS being accepted in the office to be distributed in our “Chocolate Ministry” basket by the coffee machine. (If you don’t know where it is, ask a kid.)

“STATION ELEVEN” IS OUR NEXT BOOK for the book group. This National Book Award finalist has over 65,000 reviews and an average of nearly 5 stars. A young girl grows up with a traveling band of musicians and actors, putting on performances of Shakespeare for small bands of survivors after a pandemic kills most of civilization. This uplifting, inspiring, and beautiful novel explores the preciousness of what we have, through the eyes of people who have lost much and have little. And yet, through art and music and love they hold fast to what matters most, even when it is challenged by a “prophet” who threatens everything. Look for the first section on the Resource Table. We’ll discuss this first part on Thursday, November 7, at 1:30 in the Library.

HELP WIRE CONES AND BERRIES  every Weds after the 10:15 service and lunch. The more the merrier!

MOTHERS NIGHT OUT – Come enjoy supper at church on Tuesday, December 3, at 5:30pm followed by some creative fun making things for the Christmas Greens Market. This is a great time for fellowship, laughs and fun! For info contact Chris Robertson.

THE SUNDAY SCHOOL is working on a KINDNESS program to encourage habits of doing acts of kindness every day. The students have been working on creating a “Kindness Quilt” displayed on the wall in the hallway. They post their act of kindness on a paper patch. We encourage anyone to join us in creating the quilt by adding your own kind deeds! You can find 4”x4” paper squares by the quilt. You may design your patch, write down your act of kindness and write your name or leave it anonymous. St. James can lead the way on kindness 😊

CONFIRMATION THIS YEAR will be held in May, 2025, during our Sunday visit from Bishop Bonnie. Students have already begun preparing for this significant event. As part of their prep the students will be participqaing in a service project. They chose to work with Christnet and Loaves & Fishes. To earn funds for these causes, the students will be sponsoring a BAKE SALE NEXT SUNDAY at the coffee hour. Bring your appetites and coins to help support these amazing young people. The confirmands currently include Evan Buhl, Isaac Csaki, Paiten Christie, Jackson DePaul, Brandon Dinwiddie, Reid Ferguson, Evelyn Howes, Nathan Howes, Drew Lakatosh, Gavin Mahon, Elliot Paik, Christoper Shelton, Noah Saavedra, and Miles Wilkinson. Please pray that these young people will be touched by the Holy Spirit to receive the truth of Jesus in their hearts.

BAKE SALE NEXT SUNDAY! Our Confirmation Class will be hosting a Bake Sale to raise money to help Christnet and Loaves & Fishes. Bring your appetites and coins to help support these amazing young people!

LET THE EUCHRE GAMES BEGIN –  On Monday, November 4 you are invited to come to the East River Room at 6:00pm to sign in and register to play. Games start at 6:30pm. Light snacks and beverages will be served. Call or Text Henry Fisher at 313-424-5785 today to reserve a seat at one of the tables or just show up!

FOOD DONATIONS put into the hallway food baskets go directly to kids at schools and hungry people through our Blessing Box. Thank you for donating food regularly!

A FESTIVAL OF HYMNS is the next Steeplechasers event, scheduled for Sunday, Nov 3, in Monroe. Carpool with us from Saint James (we leave at 2:30pm), or meet us at Trinity Episcopal Church for Saints Past, Present, and Future, A Festival of Hymns. Carpoolers will arrive early enough to reserve seats and admire the church and their stained glass windows, including several Tiffany — like our Tiffany Angel of Praise stained glass window in the Chapel. The Festival of Hymns begins at 4pm. Reach out to Kate Kate 313 318-3275 or Dave 313 318-9009.

NOW TAKING “KRINGLE” ORDERS The Men’s Group Kringle fundraiser is taking place through the end of October, when our order to Racine Danish Kringles will be called in.  By mid-November the freshly baked pastries will arrive on Saint James’ doorstep. Six flavor choices are being offered, which include almond, pecan, raspberry cheesecake, apple cinnamon, cherry, and raspberry. The price is $12 each, the same as last year.  Reach out to David Hartwell, Henry Fisher, Pete Jett, Burdett Milkins, David Hemsworth or Joe Engle.  Their contact information can be found in the new church directory.  What are your favorite Kringle flavors?!

A RUGGED BOX BAG can help you reduce your plastic waste from grocery visits. This Men’s Group fundraiser is a “Spring Flowers” box bag for $6 or a bag made from recycled plastic bottles for only $2. A sample of each bag are hanging on the bulletin board in Galloway Hall. Proceeds help the St. James Men’s Group and their benevolences. Reach out to David Hartwell at 313-318-9009, or email dhartwell4@yahoo.com

BOTTOMS UP DIAPER DRIVE –There will be a container in the hall by the office marked Bottoms Up diaper donations. Please consider purchasing a pack of diapers when you are shopping to donate to this worthy cause. Meanwhile, there will be a diaper drive put on by the Grosse Ile Kiwanis on Saturday, November 2nd at Grosse Ile Kroger. All donations: diapers, or checks, go to Bottoms Up. Thank you for considering donating. Your St.James representatives: Sue Lowrey, Jennifer Engle, and Karen Overesch

FREE COVID TESTS are available from the government once again. Every household can receive a free kit with 4 tests. Go do COVID.gov/tests

OUR BLESSING BOX self-service food pantry is used most days. Please bring food items to church or whenever you can. All food donations go directly to people in need. Thank you to all of our Blessing Box Caregivers—your work is working!

HAVE YOU HEARD OF VELCRO DARTS?  The Saint James Men’s Group is bringing a kinder, gentler version of “dartball” to Saint James this fall called “velcro dartball”. Go to the internet and take a look at “velcro dartball”, and then, if you want to RSVP yes to the Men’s Group invitation and sign up for Team Saint James, have “your people” let “our people” know! David Hartwell 313-318-9009 cell / text

FOOD DONATIONS FOR OUR BACKPACK PROGRAM are appreciated! Individual serving sizes are best (e.g. juice boxes, milk boxes, Mac & cheese, cereals, Chef Boyardee spaghetti, cheese and crackers, peanut butter and jelly, etc).  There is a drop-off box in the hallway by the office!

IF POLITICAL TEXTS are flooding your phone, a recent article I read says to reply STOP to the text, exactly that way: all caps and only the word STOP. I have tried it and it works! -Fr Phil

BOOK GROUP IS 1:30PM THURSDAYS – This week we discuss Chapter Chapter 6 of “The Bible Jesus Read” by Philip Yancy.

“LISETTE” BOOKS all about the life of our founder, Elizabeth Denison Forth, are available in the office for a donation of $15. These have not been available for decades, so don’t miss this chance to get a copy!
