Share Thanksgiving Dinner with your church family & friends at 4:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Where? St. James Episcopal Church, Galloway Hall! See more information in the News and Updates Section.
Greens Market Set Up is this Saturday, November 30. Greens Market has been a St James tradition for 91 years. We need lots of help covering the floors, setting up tables and bringing out supplies. The men do the heavy work beginning at 8:00 am, and the rest of us come at 9:00 am. Then on the following Saturday, December 7 at 2:00 pm, we again need lots of help putting Galloway Hall back in order. Just show up! Any time you can give will be greatly appreciated.
Greens Market Work Hours for Daytime workers are 9-4, with lunch being provided. Evening hours are 6-10+, with dinner being provided from the leftovers at lunch! Come whenever you can, and help make the magical items you see at Greens Market! All help will be welcome!
Youth Group Shopping Extravaganza This year our Vacation Bible School children raised money to support our angel tree. All Youth grade 7-12 are gathering to go buy a ton of presents for kids. Please sign up in the hall by the calendar, or email ericabenson101@gmail.com if you can come. We will meet Sunday, Dec. 1st at 2 o’clock in Galloway Hall. Adults that would like to volunteer to help please see Erica Benson!
Little Angels Night is a family fun night where children of all ages make two crafts at the Greens Market—one to take home and one to donate to the market. Hot cocoa and cookies are provided. Mark your calendars to bring the children in your life to this special event, planned for Wednesday, December 4, at 6pm.
The Saint James Christmas Party is essentially what our “Blessing of the Greens” night is, held on Friday, Dec. 6. We gather at 7:00 p.m. in Galloway Hall to bless the Christmas Greens and sing Christmas Carols. Then we enjoy a lovely night of music, punch, cheeses of the world, and Christmas cheer. After the blessing greens may also be purchased.
The Angel Tree is Here! Each angel represents a child or family in need at Christmas. Grab an angel from the tree and purchase whatever you can from the things that are listed. (Items are wishes and do not have to be exact). Sunday December 8th is an absolute deadline for the presents, as they are being distributed on Monday, December 9th. Bring your wrapped present any day up to December 8th with the angel tag attached so we can deliver it to the right family. Contact Erica Benson with any questions ericabenson101@gmail.com or 231-690-9655.
An After Glow of Greens Market will be held on Monday, Dec. 9 at 6pm. It will take place in the Fireplace Room and will have snacks and music.
An All-Parish Mailing went out this month. Also we sent a postcard in September about ChurchFest. If you aren’t receiving mailings, let us know at goodnews@saintjamesgi.net and we will get you added asap.
Little Tree Frames from last year’s Greens Market are being collected if you have them. Please bring them to the office. -Sharon Metz

“Vestry” is the Church Council of Episcopal churches. It is made up of 12 elected persons—4 elected each year to 3-year terms. Would you serve the church as a vestry member? We manage money, building, grounds, and planning to ensure that everything supports our mission as a Church of God. To find out more, speak to our Senior Warden, Blanche Hutchison or Fr. Phil. We are also looking for a “youth member,” aged 16-20.
If you Want a Hallway Mailbox please let us know in the office. Email office@saintjamesgi.net or call 734-676-1727. Not everyone wants a mailbox, but we have lots to spare! We’ll be happy to set you up.
Our Saint James Steeple has been weakened by weather and water. This week the vestry voted to hire the services of detroitsteeplejack.com (a company with a 30-year history in the Detroit area and a stellar reputation), to repair the structure, contingent on assurances that the repair will be long-lasting and sure. We will keep you updated.
Children interested in being in the Christmas Pageant on Christmas Eve, (silent or speaking parts), will meet Dec. 15th and Dec. 22nd after the 10 o’clock serve, during coffee hour to rehearse. Please contact Thomas Benson with any questions or to volunteer: thomas.b.benson@gmail.com
OUR CHRISTMAS SERVICES are scheduled for the following days:
Sunday, Dec 22 @ 5 p.m. – Blue Christmas (see below)
Tuesday, Dec 24 @ 4 p.m. – Pageant Service with Communion
Tuesday, Dec 24 @ 11 p.m. – Festival Service with Bass (Carols @ 10:30)
Wednesday, Dec 25 @ 10 a.m. – Christmas Day Service in Chapel
Our Longest Night Service (“Blue Christmas”) will be held in our historic chapel on Sunday, December 22, at 5pm. People who are mourning don’t always feel allowed to feel blue in the midst of all the high expectation of Christmas cheer. In this service we mark the longest night of the year — the day with the greatest darkness. Space will be made in this service for grief and remembrance. We will also remember that, even after the longest night, the day breaks and the light comes. All are welcome.
Questions about Christianity or anything having to do with the Christian life are being collected by Fr. Phil to be answered, as we like to do, in a January Sermon. Do you have questions about anything related to church, scripture, teaching, liturgy, doctrine, practice, or how to live the Christian life in this day and age? Send your question to rector@saintjamesgi.net or slide it under Fr. Phil’s church office door.
An Online Pledge Card is available at saintjamesgi.net/bless1
A Prayer Shawl/Blanket Ministry is now ongoing. The blankets and shawls are handmade by women from St. James and are blessed by Fr. Phil. You can take one at any time to give to any loved one, friend, or neighbor. They are located on the top shelf of the coat rack by the main office in gift bags. Please also find the folder where you can write the first name of the recipient and your name, so we don’t all give a shawl to the same person. This is a continuing ministry, so if we run out, be assured more are in the process of being made! If you can knit, crochet, sew, or just tie a knot, and you would like to participate in making them, please contact Sharon
Gift Cards donate money to the church. To purchase gift cards as holiday gifts, or to use for buying gifts, find the “SCRIP” order form on the resource table. All your favorite stores are available, even gas! Complete the order form and give it to Colleen in the office, or Lynn Blanks, with a check payable to “St. James Scrip.” The Deadline for placing orders is Dec. 8, 2019! Thank you for supporting St. James!
Christmas Carolers! Last year we had a blast singing around town. Why not do it again? If you are interested let Natalia Baker know at nataliamorris130@gmail.com or 908-656-0915. Potential dates are 12/7 and 12/14. Stay tuned for more details.
Nursery Care is available every Sunday from 9:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
Service Recordings from our 8am service are found at saintjamesgi.net under the “Media” tab, and at youtube.com/user/saintjamesgi
First Aid Kits are located throughout the church: 1) On the shelf under the main altar; 2) On the coat rack in the main hall by the office; 3) In the kitchen by the sink; and 4) In the chapel sacristy.

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.
Secretary Office Hours: Colleen is in the office Tue-Thur 9-2, & Fri 9-12.
Open Office Hours Fr. Phil is available on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 to 6:30 pm for anyone to drop in without an appointment. For a meeting of 40 minutes or more, please call or email to schedule an appointment.
THE SAINT JAMES WISH LIST
Listed below are some things that St. James would love to have, but the budget does not allow them at this time. If one of these items speaks to your heart, please make a donation toward the purchase. All partial gifts will be gratefully accepted and put toward the total cost. Also, if you see or think of something that should be on this list, please let us know at goodnews@saintjamesgi.net!
** Thank you to the Christie’s for donating our kitchen refrigerator and the hallway table refinishing!
**Our current Easter and Christmas memorial flower stands are two spray painted particle boards screwed together with lead pipe. They worked for many years, but they are now bent and unsightly and also quite heavy. The Saint James Altar Guild would like to replace these stands with the light and stackable gold plant stands shown here. They would love two full-stack sets of all 7 sizes ($218 per set), plus six more of the largest size ($40 each), totaling 20 new stands. If you can help with some or all, they would be most grateful!
🎵 🎶 🎶 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Performing at this program include Lana Cox, Casey Davis, Chuck Moore, Janice Roberts, and Sara West. James Johnson, Minister of Music, will assist on the organ.
An Invitation for all pianists and instrumentalists… If you would like to play one or more selections during the 10:00 A.M. worship service, please speak with our Minister of Music Jim Johnson. As an inviting and inclusive community of worshipers, we want to give those with musical gifts the opportunity to participate in worship in such a way.
NEWS & WRITE-UPS
SEND YOUR WRITE-UPS OF RECENT HAPPENINGS
Thanksgiving Dinner at 4:00pm at St. James…, We would love to have you come join us! Nothing could make us happier! There is a sign-up RSVP sheet in Galloway Hall on the table in the middle of the room; if you would like to join the party! All you need to bring is a dish to pass. It should be something that stirs your best memories of your family favorites!
We already have two turkeys and fixings for stuffing. If you think we need more turkey, you could roast a breast if you’d like. Our family favorite sides are rutabaga (try it, you might like it) and homemade mince tarts! There will be one buffet just for strict vegetarians (no eggs or ingredients with faces, please) and another Buffett for your other yummy dishes so that everyone is happy! YES, you can also bring friends! After dinner, the fun is your choice: We can clean up together with our super speedy dishwasher and then: Just chat and relax, or play games: Cards, Spoons, UNO, Greed, maybe Scrabble? We sure hope you will join us in this trip through time with love to share and smiles to spare!
