A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Amy Kohair, Linda VanEngelen, and Mel Bonis decorate the Christmas tree in the fireplace room!

Today is the
First Sunday of Advent!

If you Make An Advent Wreath at home with four candles you can use the website below for a short family prayer. Feel free to modify it for your own use – www.thisischurch.com/prayer_worship/liturgy/adventwreath.htm

CHRISTMAS SERVICES will be held on the days and times listed below.

The Blue Christmas service is for those who may be experiencing some grief this year.  Friday, Dec 21, 7pm, Chapel.

The 4PM Pageant Service is open to all children and youth on that night – you can’t have too many shepherds, sheep, or angels. Please speak to Nancy Crysler asap to secure a speaking role. Monday, Dec 24, 4pm, Main Church.

The 11PM “Midnight Mass” has a 30-minute festival of music preceding it, beginning at 10:30pm. This will include many Christmas Carols to be sung by all. The worship service begins at 11pm. A STRING QUARTET will be part of this holy festival service, being held Monday, Dec 24, 11pm, in the Main Church.

The 10AM Christmas Day Service has been growing every year! Last year over 30 people attended. This morning service is held in the intimacy of the chapel in the brightness of Christmas morning. Tuesday, Dec 25, 10am, Chapel.

People are impressed when you are proud of your church and want to share it. Invite family and friends. They might surprise you and say yes!

Only Once Every FOUR YEARS! The Grosse Ile Boar’s Head Festival has five performances this week, then nothing for four years. Take the chance to see this truly magical telling of the Christmas story. Get tickets at BoarsHeadGI.com

The Saint James Christmas Party is the occasion when we also do the blessing of the greens. Come to Galloway Hall on Friday, Nov 30, at 7PM for the brief blessing service which also INCLUDES SINGING CHRISTMAS CAROLS together, plus punch, music, and a chance to buy your Christmas Greens early.

A “Thank You Evening” For everyone who helped at Greens Market, will be held on Monday, Dec. 3, 2018  from 6-8pm in the Fireplace Room.  This evening is an annual event, a simple time to just relax and enjoy yourselves and your friends.  There will be a small plates meal.  You do not have to bring a single thing except a smile.   Jerry Blahut will play the piano in his own unique style and you just may feel the need to dance to his music!  There may be an additional surprise to our evening this year!   I am truly looking forward to seeing all of you on the evening of December 3rd.   With Love, Amy Kohair

Cookies for Incarcerated Youth are being collected for the holidays. If any of you wonderful women or men would like to bake an extra dozen when you’re doing your Christmas baking, it would be gratefully appreciated. There are six facilities that the cookies will be delivered to, and the two major facilities will have Christmas parties. There are 250 residents and about that many staff members. I (Sue Anderson) will be delivering them on December 11. You can leave cookies in the church kitchen on December 9 (a Sunday), 10, or 11. Just put “Sue Anderson” on the cookies so I know they are for this purpose. Remember, the incarcerated are “locked up but never locked out” of God’s love. Thank you in advance for your kindness. Some of these children have never had a homemade cookie. Blessings, Sue (734-558-7106

Flute Music to get you in the Christmas Spirit  The Herman Flute choir will be performing some wonderful Christmas Music on December 15, 2018 at 5pm right here at St. James!  Please come support Colleen and her flute choir while they offer up some beautiful flute music for your enjoyment!  A free will offering will be taken up and a portion will be donated back to St. James.

In order to assure Christmas delivery, the last day to order Scrip is Sunday, December 16, by 1:00 p.m.   This year special $10 Holiday Scrip is available, which works great for a little gift for stocking stuffers, the mailman, your hairdresser, nail tech, or a teacher. Pick up an order form and list of retailers from the resource table across from the office. Orders can be dropped off in the office or given to Lynn Blanks (676-3967). Checks payable to St. James Scrip.

Carolers Wanted! The St. James Youth Group invites You to do some Caroling this Christmas season! The more the Merrier, so please bring your friends! We will sing Saturday the December 22nd to Church members on and off the island. The music will be provided and PIZZA!!!! Meeting at Church at 5 pm and should be done by 9 pm! Please see Natalia Baker for questions.

The Deadline for Pledge Cards is here  Please help us plan next year’s budget by informing us about what you plan to give to support the church next year. This “pledge” is a big help (it is also required that we give the number of pledgers to the diocese – so please help us have a big number of pledges to report). For your convenience an online pledge card can be found at www.saintjamesgi.net/pledge while physical pledge cards can be found on the resource table across from the office along with pink envelopes. Completed cards can be placed in the offering plate, in the box behind the door in the main office, or in an envelope addressed to 25150 East River, Grosse Ile, MI 48138.

“The Greatest Early Christian Controversies” is the topic of the Thursday Book Group. After two weeks off for Thanksgiving and Greens Market the group will convene again on Thursday, December 6, in the library at 1:30. This series will not be a book but a video. At the start of the meeting we will watch a 25 minute video of the Duke Divinity School Professor of New Testament, Bart Ehrman Ph.D. With over 24 books to his name, including 4 New York Times bestsellers, Ehrman will speak on one controversy a week, afterwhich the group will discuss our opinions and reactions. The first two “controversies” have to do with Bethlehem being the place of Jesus’ birth and whether it is possible that Mary could conceive as a virgin.

Do You Play Flute?  Our interim minister of music, Jim Johnson, wants to know if anyone could help play flute for Christmas Eve or Advent services. Please contact him at 734-788-4364 as soon as possible.

Out There With Outreach:  Thank You for our “THANKSGIVING MEAL” at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen on Saturday, November 17th!!!

We had such happy guests for our Thanksgiving Meal at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen!!!  Your delicious, succulent turkeys that you roasted and sliced to perfection, were accompanied by all the sides you may have enjoyed with your own holiday family meal: mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, fresh cranberry sauce, yummy yams, cornbread-herb-filled-stuffing, dinner rolls, Patricia Saavedra’s homemade pumpkin rolls for dessert and of course the “candy poppers”!  “All you can eat” was the mantra for the day!  Gladdened faces and hearts were known by each of our guests as well as by those of you who came to cook and serve!  Peanut butter & jelly sandwiches were made “to go” and juice-boxes from our friends at Sacred Heart rounded out the beverage choices.  Bright Autumn place settings brought cheer to the tables!  Many families came to help!  Joni & Christine Bohl brought their sweet kids to help, as did Beth & Paul Primeau, the Howes & VanEngelen families.  Josh & Christina Henrickson brought their sweet little twin boys,  Mark Ferguson brought dear old Crosby and wife Lori sent long-sleeved Boars Head t-shirts from the previous pageant!   Patricia Saavedra brought her pumpkin rolls and her son Austin who was working on a school service project.  Blanche Hutchison and her daughter Desi brought bags of toiletries they had packed for each of our guests!  Mike Callahan worked at the clothing table and Jane Colwell, Sue Anderson, Dave Christie, Sharon & Phil Metz, and Dave Rudziensky made sure that we had more than enough help!  Thank you one and ALL for donating turkeys as well as all of the supplies needed to make the candy popper treats!  Thank you too for helping to make those sweet treats!    Larry & Sally Southerland have donated 4 frozen turkeys which we will use for a future Soup Kitchen meal!

Thank you to all the kids at Parke Lane Elementary who so generously donated their Halloween candy!!!  We had enough poppers for our meal, for Christ/Net and for the upcoming “Christmas Meal” that Sacred Heart will prepare for Spirit of Hope on Saturday, December 15th.  We will have that day off but we will send more candy poppers for Sacred Heart to pass out!  We have all the paper, candy and ribbon we need for that project but we can PLEASE use more T.P. tubes!.  The T.P. tubes may be left in the box by the Soup Kitchen bulletin board.

All of you made our most recent meal a true Thanks-Giving day!!!  May God Bless each of your hearts and souls, Always.

Our next turn to prepare and serve the meal at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen will be on Saturday, January 19, 2018.  We love you all so very much!  Thank You for all your help, Sincerely, Amy & Frank Kohair
