CHRISTMAS SERVICES:

Sunday, Dec 22 @ 5 p.m. – Blue Christmas (see below)

Tuesday, Dec 24 @ 4 p.m. – Pageant Service with Communion

Tuesday, Dec 24 @ 11 p.m. – Festival Service with Brass (Carols @ 10:30)

Wednesday, Dec 25 @ 10 a.m. – Christmas Day Service in Chapel

Our Longest Night Service (“Blue Christmas”) will be held in our historic chapel tonight, December 22, at 5pm. In the midst of all the high expectation of Christmas cheer people who are mourning feel a lot of pressure. Not in this service. As we mark the longest night of the year, the day of the greatest darkness, we make space for grief and remembrance.

Our Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 26 following the 10am service. Come hear reports on the year past and plans for the year ahead, plus elections and a finance report.

Thanks To Your Generosity we are able to replace the all the large single-pane windows in our Office and Education Wing through our capital campaign early next month. The dates for installation are Monday and Tuesday, January 13 & 14. This $55,000 project is truly a generational one that will pay off for decades to come. Thanks to you!

The Church Office Will Be Closed from Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day. With great joy we will, of course, celebrate the first Sunday of Christmas on December 29th at our usual 8am and 10am services. Don’t forget the awesome New Year’s parish lunch to follow.

Amazon.com has the Episcopal charity in Honduras “El Hogar” as one of their official charities. This place which helps hundreds of homeless boys and girls a year was founded by one of our parishioners. If you want a portion of your purchase to go to El Hogar, surf over to smile.amazon.com and choose “El Hogar” as your designated charity. Julie Kohn recently received this in an email from Amazon….”Your charity, El Hogar Ministries Inc. recently received a quarterly donation of $231.42 thanks to customers shopping at smile.amazon.com.  To date, Amazon Smile has donated a total of: $3,124.26 to El Hogar Ministries Inc, & $156,109,909.51 to all Charites.”

The 5th Sunday committee is making a list  (of RSVPs) and checking it twice for the “New Year’s” Breakfast after the 10 o’clock church service on December 29, the last 5th Sunday in 2019. *
If you would like to (b)ring in the New Year a few days early with good food, fun, and fellowship, but have yet to RSVP, that is okay — reservations are still being accepted until the end of the day on Sunday, December 22.
RSVP to David Hartwell by email, cell phone, or text at dhartwell4@yahoo.com, or 313 318-9009, or look for a sign-up sheet on a clipboard in Galloway Hall. * FYI — Next year four months have five Sundays, or 5th Sundays.  Be sure to circle March 29, May 31, August 30, and November 29 on your 2020 calendar — the 5th Sunday committee plans to celebrate them, and you are on the guest list!!!  LOL   Merry Christmas!

The New Year is almost here,  and so are the “Read the Bible” handouts!  You can “read the Bible” in a year and find encouragement, hope, life instructions, great stories, history, and help of all kinds, within its covers.  The handout will be located on the resource table across from the office, and will help you along your journey.

Answering Your Question In a January Sermon  What do you wonder about church, scripture, teaching, liturgy, doctrine, practice, or living the Christian life in this day and age? Send your question to rector@saintjamesgi.net or slide it under Fr. Phil’s church office door and we’ll address your question in a January sermon.

An Online Pledge Card is available now at www.saintjamesgi.net/bless1

Nursery Care is available every Sunday from 9:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

THE SAINT JAMES WISH LIST

Listed below are some things that St. James would love to have, but the budget does not allow them at this time. If one of these items speaks to your heart, please make a donation toward the purchase. All partial gifts will be gratefully accepted and put toward the total cost. Also, if you see or think of something that should be on this list, please let us know at goodnews@saintjamesgi.net!

  • Do you have an item for the Wish List?  Please speak to a Vestry member or Fr. Phil to have your wish listed here!

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Upcoming Event:

Saturday, January 18, 2020  7:00 P.M. in the chapel.   “Music of Change”  The Grosse Ile Wind Quartet presents a program of music important to the civil rights movement and more.  This program is especially meaningful as it follows the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Sunday, January 19, 2020  10:00 A.M. in the Main Church  The choir presents two significant musical offerings on this day from two separate Bach Cantatas – “The Only Son From Heaven,” which is the closing chorale from BWV 22 and is appropriate to the Gospel for that day, and the familiar “Jesu bleibet meine Freude” (Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring” which is also the closing chorale from BWV 147.  We will have guest musicians to appropriately accompany these two works. If you would like to sponsor the cost of the musicians as a thank-offering or memorial, please speak with Jim Johnson.

An Invitation for all pianists and instrumentalists…   If you would like to play one or more selections during the 10:00 A.M. worship service, please speak with our Minister of Music Jim Johnson.  As an inviting and inclusive community of worshipers, we want to give those with musical gifts the opportunity to participate in worship in such a way.
