A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

Susan Lowery and her Granddaughter working together – it’s a tradition!

Blessing of the Greens will take place Friday, December 1, 2017 at 7:00 pm.  there will be a short blessing, followed by a reception that will include punch, cheeses and other food varieties.  You can pick up your pre-orders at this time and even do some more shopping!  Hope to see you there!

Thank You Greens Market Workers! Please join us Monday, December 4, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 pm in the fireplace room for a Post Greens Market thank you evening.  This is a casual evening to relax and to celebrate.  No need to bring anything except your laughter and friendship.  A light supper will be served.   Everyone is welcome! Questions? Call Amy Kohair at 734-693-0694

Warm Winter Men’s Coats will be collected on the Sundays of Advent by the Men’s Ministry Group.  Please check your closets and drawers for coats, sweaters, scarves, and gloves and bring them with you to church.  A collection box will be set up in the hallway and all donated items will be delivered to Spirit of Hope before Christmas.  Thanks for your care and generosity.

Make an Advent Wreath: Consider making your own Advent Wreath this year and lighting it every Sunday night at dinner. Here’s a good resource for a home-service that you can modify: https://tinyurl.com/ouradventprayer. Here are wreath-making instructions: https://youtu.be/_cunOkJlLe4. (Note the Episcopal Church typically uses blue candles for Advent instead of purple so as to not confuse the season with Lent.) Enjoy!

Our Annual Christmas Pageant will be held once again on Christmas Eve at the 4pm service.  All children and youth are welcome to participate. There are no speaking parts – you just have to dress up as an angel, shepherds, cow, sheep, 3 kings etc. Costumes are provided.  Children will practice lightly for a few weeks before in Sunday School.  The pageant is always well received by the audience.  Please join us in demonstrating what happened that first Christmas Day.

SCRIP Christmas Presents are  now for sale! “SCRIP” are gift cards to hundreds of stores and restaurants, like Target, Home Depot, and Red Lobster. The cards are the same as what you buy at the store. The only difference is you earn money for Saint James with each purchase you make. The entire list of retailers and order forms are located on the information table. Contact Lynn Blanks (676-3967) with questions. Place orders with me after church or leave them with Colleen in the office.  Payment due with the order. Checks payable to:  Saint James SCRIP. Avoid the malls and find the perfect gift here at church.  The last day to place an order is Sunday, December 17, at noon.

Holiday-Themed Pajamas are being collected for the National Honor Society in our third annual pajama drive. We are in need of jammies for children of all ages and sizes. All donated pajamas will go to donation centers that will distribute them to families in need in the downriver area (Penrickton Center for Blind Children, St. Leo’s Parish, and the Sacred Heart Food Pantry to name a few). Please consider donating to help a child stay warm and happy this holiday season. Thank you for your continued help and support. Molly Matthews and Lauren Naso

Incarcerated Youth Ministries needs cookies for 250 incarcerated youth and an equal number of staff for Christmas. Bob Kirby, the director, will be putting on 2 parties at the major facilities on Christmas and the day after, and will be delivering cookies to the other four facilities. If you can bake an extra dozen while doing your baking, please bring them to the St. James kitchen on Dec 10.  They will be delivered on Dec. 12th.  Just mark them “I.Y.M. Cookies,” and use disposable containers. He also needs help with the parties.  Any questions please call Sue Anderson (734)558-7106 or email at sues389@yahoo.com.  Please let Sue know if you are making cookies so she can let Bob know in advance.  Thank you!

STEWARDSHIP 2018  Proportional giving is a spiritual discipline. Decide what percent of your income you want to give to God’s work through the Church and fill out a pledge card to confirm your commitment. The giving standard has long been 10% of income, but many people who cannot reach that number immediately begin at 3% and increase the percent each year. Our church budget is approximately $280,000. Last year a deficit budget was passed. Please remember the church in your giving. More information with an on-line pledge card can be found at www.saintjamesgi.net/give

An Online Pledge Card can be found at www.saintjamesgi.net/give along with Frequently Asked Questions concerning the Saint James’ budget. Thank you for supporting Saint James’ Church.

Halloween Candy & Toilet Paper Rolls are being collected to make special “popper” gifts for the Soup Kitchen guests at their Christmas Meal. Look for a box in the main hallway by the resource table. We also could use Christmas wrapping paper, ribbons, and scotch tape. Thank you!

Christmas Poppers will be put together on Dec. 10th for the soup kitchen desert. We invite all kids and their parents to help put these together right after the 10 o’clock service on Dec. 10th. Thank you in advance.

A Great Way To Get Involved would be during coffee hour at St. James.  In order to continue meeting and greeting each other at coffee hour volunteers are needed to man the kitchen.  This includes making the coffee, serving and cleaning up.  Coffee, tea, sugar, and creamer are supplied, but you may bring a simple snack, such as store bought cookies.  It does not need to be an elaborate spread. If you are not able to host a coffee hour, you may be interested in bringing some cookies that could be saved and served as needed.

Prayer at Communion is available every Sunday at the 10 AM service.  Prayer Team members stand at either side of the altar rail.  After you receive the bread and wine, engage a prayer team member and ask for prayer of any kind, which they will offer on your behalf.  Prayer requests are confidential.

A Sunday Morning Bible Study runs between services every week from 9:05 to 9:50 AM in the Fireplace Room. Led by Fr. Phil with lots of space for discussion, this open study is a great for increasing knowledge and faith.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello!

THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY RED DOOR GALA CELEBRATION

After all the wonderful Christmas celebrations are over, what’s next…you ask?  On Saturday January 13, 2018 Come and celebrate our church sesquicentennial at this grand evening event for you, your family and your friends.  You can wear period costumes from 1868 to your present day, party finest. Stroll through the church property and hear all about St. James’ history while enjoying hors d’oeuvres, wine, champagne or punch.  There will be lovely background music.  After the walking tour, we will have a rollicking auction with amazing donations from the congregation and area merchants.  The night will finish relaxing in the  Fireplace Room with a light meal and where some of our best story tellers will share St. James tales.  All proceeds from the evening will go to the chapel fund.

We are looking for help. We need people who can share a short 5-10 min. talk on areas of our history (you will be provided a script), we need help with the food and drinks, we need donations for the auction, and a couple of fun loving auctioneers , and finally people who have stories to tell.  Don’t miss this.  Mark your calendars today. This will be an evening to remember!!  Call Kate Hartwell with offers to help, donations and ideas. 313 318 3275

SAINT JAMES WISH LIST

Listed below are some things that St. James would love to have, but the budget does not allow them at this time. If one of these items speaks to your heart, please make a donation toward the purchase. All partial gifts will be gratefully accepted and put toward the total cost. Also, if you see or think of something that should be on this list, please let us know at goodnews@saintjamesgi.net!

Can you help string Christmas Lights on the front stone wall and front trees? We have lights, but need help getting them up. We’ll leave them lit through the winter until Lent. Talk with Fr. Phil to find out more.
