Liz Hartley helps to serve lunch at a Greens Market work day.

Join the ECW for  “Christmas Renewal”
this Monday at 6:30pm.  Enjoy carol singing, friendship and a light supper.  Bring nothing but yourself and sweet holiday memories.Thank You to everyone who made this year’s Greens Market a success. Your labor and support makes a positive impact on this island and around the world.

Popper Supplies are being collected now in the large box in the hallway: leftover Halloween candy (check out sales at stores too!), curling ribbon, tape, Christmas wrapping paper, and cardboard tubes from T.P. rolls.  Our youth will assemble the poppers after the 10am service on December 13, and they will be given as gifts when we serve Christmas Dinner at the Spirit of Hope soup kitchen.

A Winter Clothing Drive is being sponsored by the Men’s Ministry Team of Saint James’ for the Spirit of Hope Community.  Coats, sweaters, gloves and jeans are greatly appreciated.  There will be boxes set up in the hallway to receive your donations.  Clothing will be delivered to Spirit of Hope on December 17th.

The “Vestry” is what the leadership body of Saint James’ is called. Our vestry consists of 12 persons who guide our program, budget and vision. A strong vestry is a diverse vestry, where people of different ages, experience, and expertise take counsel together, with the rector. Express interest to Fr. Phil to learn more.

Men’s Breakfast will be Saturday, December 13 at 8:30 am at Mom’s Restaurant on Fort Street in Trenton.  Join us if you’re able, and bring a friend!

Tickets Are Going Fast for the Grosse Ile Boar’s Head Festival (Dec 10-13). This non-profit community event involves over 400 people in cast, crew, and choirs. It includes a full orchestra, bagpipe, organ, countless talents and so much more. Most importantly, it celebrates the birth of our Savior.  Kids and Senior tickets available.  www.boarsheadgi.com.

Questions You’ve Always Wondered About will be the sole topic of a sermon or two in January. Please send your questions to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net or submit a question anonymously by passing it under the rector’s door. The more questions the better!

Many Pledge Cards have been returned, and many of you have accepted the challenge to increase your pledge of support by 10% this year. THANK YOU! If you have not yet let our treasurer know what you intend to give to Saint James’ next year, please go to http://www.saintjamesgi.net/pledge or find a pledge card in the church and place it in the Treasurer’s box in the hallway. We are crafting next year’s budget, and so need as accurate an estimate as possible as to what our shared resources for mission will be in 2016.

Walk Down Easy Street with your giving by making automatic, electronic payments to the mission of Saint James’.  Have you ever gotten to the last 3 months of the year and realized you were behind on your pledge to the church?  Were there checks you forgot to write on the Sundays you missed church?  Do you want  some peace of mind?  Try electronic giving for a carefree drive along Easy Street.  Find an instruction booklet outside the treasurer’s office or go to saintjamesgi.net/give on the internet.  Tech support is available by email, text or phone  to Curt Crysler-734-552-4245, ccrysler@solowp.com.

The Outdoor Christmas Lights are a new addition, thanks to our Senior High Youth Group, who conceived the layout and strung the lights. Thank you, teens! The LED lights are very low wattage. They will remain up through the new year.

Prayer is Powerful, and the 10am Prayer Team is looking for more individuals to help with this important ministry.  Please prayerfully consider if this might be a way for you to serve.  Contact Herman Rugel at 250-3375 for more information.

Place an Order For Scrip Gift Cards and avoid the stress of holiday shopping!  A percentage of the gift card comes back to Saint James. Order forms and the list of over 400 participating retailers are located on the information table.  Orders must be pre-paid.  Make checks payable to St. James Scrip. The last day to order will be Sunday December 13 to ensure holiday delivery. Contact Lynn Blanks (734-676-3967 or lblanks@wideopenwest.com) for help.

The Collection Drums are filling with socks.  The Saint James family has shown great compassion for the homeless in Detroit by placing new or gently used pairs of socks in the If Feet Could Talk collection drums.   God bless all of you who have already donated or plan to do so in the coming weeks.  Your act of kindness will make a difference in the life of another human being.

Volunteers are always needed to host the coffee hour.  There is not a “special committee” to do this.  Coffee hour happens only if everyone takes a turn making the coffee and bringing simple refreshments.  See Joan Hemsworth if you have any questions (734-675-8191).

Weekly Open Bible Studies are held every Sunday Morning in the Fireplace Room at 9:05 am. Join in any time!

Coffee and Fellowship follow the 10am Service every Sunday in Galloway Hall.

 MUSIC NOTES
A Weekly Series by Daniel Susan, our Minister of Music

John the Baptist makes his appearance on Advent 2 and 3, and all our hymns today carry his words of warning, repentance, comfort, and joy; quite a wide range of thoughts! Often we like to focus on the comfort and joy part more, but the complete message that we sing today is a perfect pivot from the Old Testament law which shows us our sins, to the New Testament grace which shows us our salvation. John the Baptist can sometimes get light attention in our focus yet he is the only one other than Jesus whose birthday has been celebrated on the liturgical calendar on June 24 since ancient times (although some observe the nativity of the Virgin Mary). A commonly known flower that usually blooms around June 24 was named for him: St. John’s Wort. It can be fascinating to find references to the Church  sprinkled throughout western secular culture.  Our use of the syllables “Do-Re-Mi-Fa…” etc., is derived from a hymn to John the Baptist written by the Venerable Bede. Each section of the tune begins on successively higher notes, so the Latin syllable attached to that note was borrowed to give us what is still used world-wide to identify musical pitch. This hymn, in English but with the historic tune, can be sung at No. 271 in The Hymnal 1982.
