CONFIRMATION – for our St. James’ youth will be held on April 11 ( Saturday before Easter) at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Detroit. It will be our new Bishop, Rev. Dr. Bonnie Perry’s first Confirmation ceremony as bishop. If you are interested in preparing for this special event, contact Erica Benson or Nancy Crysler. Prep classes begin after the 10:00 service on Feb. 23 in the library.
The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is an extravaganza of chocolate, sugar and friends! Scheduled for February 25, 2020 at 6:00 PM in Galloway Hall, get in one last Hurrah before the start of Lent!
Ash Wednesday Services will be held on Wednesday February 26 at 6:15am, 10:15am and 6:45pm. Ashes-To-Go will be offered in the front parking lot from 4:30pm-6:30pm, including ashes and a short blessing.
Lenten Potlucks begin Wednesday, March 4 and continue for 5 total weeks. The evenings have three parts; come to any or all: Evening Prayer begins at 6:15pm in the chapel. Potluck Dinner begins at 6:35pm in Galloway Hall. “Timeline of the Bible” Program begins at 7:10pm in Galloway Hall. We do not have groups hosting the potlucks this year. Come for food, stay for fun, grow your faith.
The Timeline of the Whole Bible is this year’s Lenten Program. When did David reign? Who were the prophets, when did they speak, and why do we care? What key events form the structure of the entire Bible? How does it affect our faith? This program, led by Fr. Phil at 7:10pm on Wednesdays in Lent (after the 6:35pm potluck!) will answer all these questions in just 5 weeks. By Easter you will have the entire Biblical timeline in your mind and an understanding of how Christ fulfills it in our own day.
Attention Woodworkers! Our children’s program needs your help. To help our children understand and engage the worship space we are looking to make a mini altar, pulpit and lectern sized for 5-7 year olds. Having you make one with your own hands would be an incredible gift to future generations of little ones. Please reach out to our Director of Children’s Ministries, Erica Benson at ericabenson101@gmail.com or 231-690-9655.
A Special Lenten Children’s Program called “Godly Play” will begin on Sunday, March 1st and run for 6 weeks though Palm Sunday. Godly Play is a story-based, hands-on, experiential Montessori-method of teaching children that engages them on their own level and encourages creative play and understanding. The program will be held after communion until noon, during the time when we are currently hosting children’s crafts. For more information see Erica Benson.
Christnet Services is holding a fundraiser at Carrabba’s on Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 11:30 – 1:30pm. Cost is $20 for adults, $5.00 for 10 & under. Please call Linda Dickman for tickets at 734-673-2444.
We are Collecting Palms from last year to be burned for Ash Wednesday ashes. If you want to turn in your palms, please bring them to the main office. Get your new palms on Palm Sunday, April 5, 2020.
Old Testament Video Class Each session will begin by watching a 25-minute video of world-renowned Jewish Biblical scholar Dr. Amy-Jill Levine teaching about a major Old Testament story. Passages will include the Creation, the Passover, the conquest of the land of Canaan, the reign of David, and much more. Open discussion follows. Led by Fr. Phil these programs require no advanced preparation, no reading ahead, and no commitment. We will be watching these videos on Thursday mornings at 10:30am in the Library throughout the seasons of Lent and Easter. Come as you are able!
Barbara Massey is now living in apartment #344 of American House on Fort Street in Riverview. A previous interim Minister of Music of Saint James and spouse of Lance Massey, our Minister of Music for many years, Barbara is eager to have visitors. Give her a call at 734-785-8952 to schedule a time to swing by and say hello. Since she is no longer able to drive, you might even consider “breaking her out” to go out to lunch.
Do you stay for Coffee Hour? Have you taken a turn to volunteer to man the kitchen (bring simple snacks, make coffee/tea, cleanup)? It is a good way to get involved at St. James. Another way to be part of Coffee Hour is to bring packaged cookies to serve when needed. If you see only one person working in the kitchen, please go in and help with cleanup. That is always greatly appreciated. Look for the sign-up sheet on the table in Galloway Hall. See Joan Hemsworth for more information.
It’s good news that 7 Christnet families are moving into apartments next month. The downside is they are in need of furniture. They need TV’s, end tables, night stands and dressers. If anyone has these pieces of furniture available please contact: Sue Lowery 734-771-2503 or Jane Colwell 734-671-9446. Or email Tammy Ranck tamara727@outlook.com to make arrangements for pickup. Thank you!
DTE Takes Old Fridges and leaves a $50 check, as we’ve recently learned and wanted to share. Call 866 796-0512 to schedule a pickup. Click here https://tinyurl.com/fridge50 to learn more. The church has a fridge that qualifies. We’d like to get the $50 to ECW as early Rummage income, but the appliance must be located at a residence. If you would be willing to have DTE pick up the church fridge from your house, please let Fr. Phil or David Hartwell know. We will coordinate getting the appliance into your garage. You would just need to call and coordinate the pick-up.
Soup Kitchen Dates — Our next turn at the soup kitchen is Saturday, April 18. After that our next turn is Saturday, June 20. Sign-up sheets are posted on our bulletin board in the main hallway. Please sign-up so we know who to expect. Meet in our north parking lot at 8:30 to load up food and supplies and car-pool downtown. If you have signed up and cannot come, or if you have any questions please call Amy Kohair 734-693-0694 or Frank Kohair 734-693-5904. ALSO, Please let us know if you are meeting us downtown instead of at St. James. Thank You, With Love.

Good Morning To All,
I would like to thank everyone for the potluck dishes you brought for the Bishop’s visit, all of them were great. Special thanks to Amy Kohair and Sue Weston for manning the kitchen and all who helped. What a wonderful lovely evening we had on Wednesday, February 12th as we welcomed our new Bishop, Bonnie Perry here at Saint James. The excitement in the air was heavy with anticipation of her arrival. She came in as the choirs sang ‘Call to me, I am Here’. Truly a lovely song.
Bishop Bonnie Perry has a very high energy surrounding her; she indeed passed it on to us. She took the time to meet everyone and showed interest in everyone. She is very easy to relate to.
Her Message to us included asking us when we have experienced The Holy at Saint James. Then she asked “What do the people of Grosse Ile and Downriver need?” With that in mind she invited us to think creatively about how we could do evangelism by listening and noting to people when they speak of something that is holy. Also she suggested that we could think about the area where our individual gifts meet the needs of our community and the historic strengths of Saint James. “Get out to where the people are.” She suggested. Host functions at the schools. Host candidate forums. “I have a great vision for this diocese,” she said. “But of course I can’t do it alone. We can only do this together.” It was all very inspiring!
We look forward to her next visit, whenever that may be. Please join me in praying for the mission of our diocese under Bonnie’s energetic and faithful direction.
God’s Blessings to you, Blanche Hutchison Senior Warden
Inspirational Thought
Mornings are made by God to make us fall in love with Life…
Not just once, but again and again…
Mornings are created for us to see the beauty of life and to know there
Are people who care and pray for us to be happy, healthy, and strong.
I pray that this day brings a smile not just in your lips, but in your heart.
Good morning! Have a wonderful day! – Blanche Hutchison
