The Ten-Week Preparation For Confirmation is under way for 6 students: Andrew Ador Johnson, Warren Johnson, William Johnson, Abbey McNeill, Tommy Shumate and Hannah Thomas. As their outreach project, the group has chosen to meet with the residents of Applewood Nursing Home to cheer them up, help them and entertain them. All of the confirmands are musical and decided to learn and perform music for the Applewood residents. With the help of Sharon Thomas, Hannah’s mother who is a music teacher, the group is on its way to learning some older songs. Thank you to the parents who are preparing lunches for us during the classes which are held after the 10:00 services on Sundays. The group will be going to St. Paul’s Cathedral for a service in the near future. Please pray for these special young people who are about to make the most critical decision in their spiritual lives.
Games to Share? We are looking for some fun games for our young people. If anyone has a corn hole game, foosball, air hockey etc. game they would like to donate, it would be much appreciated. The games can be used as learning tools in Sunday School . Contact Nancy Crysler, ncrsyler@outlook.com

TO BEAN, OR NOT TO BEAN, THAT IS THE QUESTION
Welcome to the (de)caffeinated world of the Saint James CBCBC (Coffee Bean Collective Buying Club). No matter how you brew your coffee, whether with a drip coffee maker, a pod brewer, a french press, or some other brewing method, we’ve “bean” hoping you would join us. The CBCBC has no initiation fee, no dues, and no secret handshake, although a secret handshake might be fun!
We order coffee from CoffeeAM, a coffee roaster in Georgia, who fresh roasts our individual orders in sizes as small as 1/2 pound. Order your coffee ground to match your brewing method or you may order whole bean coffee. Don’t forget that Saint James now has a grinder that you are welcome to use if you are ordering whole bean regular coffee, but not flavored.
Please take a minute to let David Hartwell know if you would be interested in the CBCBC. If he does not hear from you he will assume you are a tea drinker. Just kidding!!! Email dhartwell4@yahoo.com or phone / text 313 318-9009.
A word from your Treasurer
Many in the congregation heard of our unfortunate financial year (2015) and responded immediately. As a result our January numbers were encouraging, both in attendance and revenue. We did it together in a feeling of family and teamwork. That’s the way it should be. Here is a question I hear often: “Why do we spend on things that can be put off until later?” Answer: The church’s two main bank accounts can be likened to family accounts. Most of us have a checking account from which we pay our ongoing expenses like DTE, phone, etc. Most also have a savings account. No matter the size of our savings account, we need to be careful when our checking account can’t cover our normal recurring bills and we have to borrow from savings to pay them. That was the case in 2015 for the church. The savings account was still alive and growing, but we had to borrow from it to pay the bills. Also, large capital expenses in 2015 were paid for by the Crowley Fund for Capital Expenses, which is a longterm savings especially for large projects that become necessary, like parking lots and roofs.

🎵 🎶 🎶🎵 MUSIC NOTES 🎵🎶🎶 🎵
A Weekly Series by Daniel Susan, our Minister of Music
J.S. Bach returns this week as Bach-the-preacher. Yet another well-known chorale (hymn) from his day is the basis of the prelude with a penitential text and expressive organ rendering. To call this preaching is not the stretch that it might seem. In Bach’s day long hymns were often divided up with various groups taking each verse. The choir might sing the first verse alone, the people the second, and the organ alone would render the third, clearly reflecting and amplifying the text. This pattern would continue until the hymn was complete. It can be tempting to think that music without words is “background” or “mood” music, but there is an old and once wide-spread tradition that instrumental music could carry deep meaning. Of course, to discern the message takes a more intimate knowledge of the text and tune, and many of these Bach musical-homilies are based on tunes and texts not known to us. At St. James many moments are graced with organ improvisations based on the day’s music. If it’s a hymn, then consulting the text might be enlightening to your personal devotion while the music preaches; I tend to select a verse in particular for a focus when launching into this kind of unpacking of our faith. Pray on the hymns. They’re not just for Sunday anymore!
