A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK
Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net                                          .

Our Secretary Colleen on the right taking a picture of her son, Chris, who is marching at Disney World with Carlson High School.

Ash Wednesday is this week. Services will be held in the chapel this Wednesday, February 26, at 6:15AM, 10:15AM, 6:45PM.

Ashes-To-Go are available this Wednesday from 4:30-6:30PM in our front parking lot.

Our Pancake Supper for Shrove Tuesday is being held this Tuesday at 6PM. Come join the extravaganza of syrup, chocolate, sugar, and friends!

Stone Soup is being offered on Ash Wednesday after the 10:15AM service. If possible, bring a cup of blanched pre- cut vegetables, or cooked noodles or rice to add to a simmering pot. Other side dishes or desserts are welcome.

Sister Betty will be offering an Ash Wednesday Meditation this Wednesday following the Stone Soup fellowship meal.

Lent Potlucks begin Wednesday, March 4 and continue for 5 total weeks. The evenings have three parts: Evening Prayer begins at 6:15pm in the chapel. A Potluck Dinner begins at 6:35pm in Galloway Hall. Our Lent Program begins at 7:10pm in Galloway Hall. We are not assigning hosts this year, so come freely for food, faith, fellowship, and fun!

Confirmation for our Teens is planned for April 11, which is the Saturday before Easter. It will be our new Bishop, Rev. Dr. Bonnie Perry’s first Confirmation ceremony as bishop.  If you are interested in preparing for this sacrament, contact Erica Benson or Nancy Crysler. Prep classes begin after the 10:00 service on Feb. 23 in the library.

A St. Patrick’s Day Corned Beef Dinner is planned for Saturday, March 14. Family-friendly and open to all, the meal will be offered from 5:30-7:30PM in Galloway hall. The featured dish: Famous Wiggly’s corned beef with cabbage, potatoes, carrots, dessert, Coffee & Tea. Meal Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for 12 & under, or $30 for a family.  Tickets are for sale in advance as well as on sale at the door.  Take out meals will also be available.

A Special Lenten Children’s Program called “Godly Play” will begin on Sunday, March 1st and run for 6 weeks though Palm Sunday. Godly Play is a story-based, hands-on, experiential Montessori-method of teaching children that engages them on their own level and encourages creative play and understanding. The program will be held after communion until noon, during the time when we are currently hosting children’s crafts. For more information see Erica Benson.

Lost Dog – $500 Reward A black pug named “Stanley” has gone missing on the island. If you find him call Paige Levy at 734-216-2438.

Nadia Bolz-Webber, a famous teacher and preacher, will be speaking at Christ Church Cranbrook on Sunday, March 1, beginning at 5pm. Doors open at 4pm. The Detroit Youth Choir, recently featured on “America’s Got Talent” will sing at 4:30pm.

ChristNet Services is holding a fundraiser at Carrabba’s on Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 11:30 – 1:30pm. Cost is $20 for adults, $5.00 for 10 & under. Please call Linda Dickman for tickets at 734-673-2444.

An Old Testament Video Class  is running weekly on Thursdays from 10:30AM to noon. In each session we watch a 25-minute video of world-renowned Jewish Biblical scholar Dr. Amy-Jill Levine teaching about a major Old Testament story. Open discussion follows. Led by Fr. Phil these programs require no advanced preparation, no reading ahead, and no commitment. Come as you are able!

Barbara Massey is now living in apartment #344 of American House on Fort Street in Riverview. A previous interim Minister of Music of Saint James and spouse of Lance Massey, our Minister of Music for many years, Barbara is eager to have visitors. Give her a call at 734-785-8952 to schedule a time to swing by and say hello. Since she is no longer able to drive, you might even consider “breaking her out” to go out to lunch.

The Grosse Ile Chorale Lenten Concert will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2020, at 3PM at the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church. Performing will be the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church Adult Choir, the Grosse Ile Children’s Choir, the Parker Chorale, and the Grosse Ile Chorale. Featured in this 35th year of concerts is the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. The Grosse Ile Chorale will sing his Mass in A Major, BWV 234, for choir, soloists, and chamber orchestra.  The Chorale is directed by James Parker, and assisted by Barbara Conroy.  There is no admission charge, but a Freewill Offering will be taken.

The Timeline of the Whole Bible is this year’s Lenten Program. When did David reign? Who were the prophets, when did they speak, and why do we care? What key events form the structure of the entire Bible? How does it affect our faith? This program, led by Fr. Phil at 7:10pm on Wednesdays in Lent (after the 6:35pm potluck!) will answer all these questions in just 5 weeks. By Easter you will have the entire Biblical timeline in your mind and an understanding of how Christ fulfills it in our own day.

When To Call Fr. Phil: You can call your clergy any time, but these times are particularly important: When you or someone in your household is dying. When you or someone in your household is seriously ill or hospitalized. When you are going through a major transition of any kind (job loss, move, diagnosis, divorce, etc.). When you have significant questions or spiritual struggle. When you have a joy to share. When you are suffering any trauma or loss. When you are looking for a role in the church or to volunteer. When you are considering a major sacrament such as Baptism, Marriage, or Confirmation. When you want to make a formal “Confession” (we use the rite in the Book of Common Prayer on page 447). Fr. Phil can be reached at 734-676-1729 or by text or cell at 734-775-7140.

Do you stay for Coffee Hour?  Have you taken a turn to volunteer to man the kitchen (bring simple snacks, make coffee/tea, cleanup)?  It is a good way to get involved at St. James.  Another way to be part of Coffee Hour is to bring packaged cookies to serve when needed.  If you see only one person working  in the kitchen, please go in and help with cleanup.  That is always greatly appreciated.  Look for the sign-up sheet on the table in Galloway Hall.  See Joan Hemsworth for more information.

Soup Kitchen Dates — Our next turn at the soup kitchen is Saturday, April 18. After that our next turn is Saturday, June 20. Sign-up sheets are posted on our bulletin board in the main hallway. Please sign-up so we know who to expect. Meet in our north parking lot at 8:30 to load up food and supplies and car-pool downtown. If you have signed up and cannot come, or if you have any questions please call Amy Kohair 734-693-0694 or Frank Kohair 734-693-5904. ALSO, Please let us know if you are meeting us downtown instead of at St. James. Thank You, With Love.

Study The Bible On Sunday Mornings  at 9:07am in the Fireplace Room.  We start by reading aloud a chapter from a New Testament book. An open discussion follows, guided by Fr. Phil.  Come and try it out this Sunday.
