ASH WEDNESDAY is this week! Feb 10. Short services will be held in our chapel from 6:15-6:45am, 10:15-11am & 7-7:40pm. Please make it a priority to attend Ash Wednesday services at Saint James or near your place of work to mark a holy beginning of Lent.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is an extravaganza of chocolate, sugar and friends scheduled for February 9th at 6:00 PM in Galloway Hall. Get in one last Hurrah before the start of Lent!
ECW Monday Night Program – FEB. 8th. – This is going to be a really fun evening. First we are going to enjoy pizza and salad at 6:30, and then Joyce Turin will take us through a journey of 50 years of Town Hall Speakers. She has had the exciting opportunity of meeting so many celebrities and will share some of her stories with us. We will then watch a video of Jeanne Robertson. I think she is the funniest speaker and comedienne since Phyllis Diller. She has a way to make everything funny – including sending her husband to the grocery store. Everyone is welcome to join us (including men!).
A Shared, Simple Meal is the setting for Saint James’ Foyer Groups. Foyers meet to share a meal and conversation for four months and then dissolve. This series of once-monthly meetings run from March to June. Sign up on the signup board, or by contacting the church office office@saintjamesgi.net 734-676-1727.
Brand New Bible Studies are being offered through Saint James this Winter and Spring, bringing the number of parishioner Bible Studies to four, with two weekly and two monthly: First, an open, drop-in Bible Study is held every Sunday morning at 9:05 in the Fireplace Room. Second, we are newly adding a Thursday Morning Bible Study at 10:15am at church. In this Study we will begin with 10 minutes of meditative quiet, then read a chapter of scripture and share in discussion, then end with another 10 minutes of meditative prayer that end with a brief time of shared prayer led by Fr. Phil. This study is every Thursday morning, beginning February 11. Third, please sign up on the sign-up board by the main entrance or contact office@saintjamesgi.net if you would like to be part of a simple “African-Method” Bible Study held on a weeknight once-a-month, in different member’s homes. This Bible Study involves no preparation ahead of time. Instead the scripture is read a number of times by a number of voices and the content of the study is sharing our questions and insights. Please join this study especially if you are willing to be a leader for a similar study this fall. Fourth, please sign up on the sign-up board or contact office@saintjamesgi.net if you would like to be a part of a so-called “Deep Dive” Bible Study that will require some preparation beforehand for two designated leaders each time. Those leaders will study just a few of the scriptures for the coming Sunday and write-up or prepare a reflection on what they learned. This is no-pressure, as there are no right answers and no evaluation. Rather, the reflection becomes the starting point for a group conversation. These meetings often involve pie or some other dessert.
Bring your Palms from last Palm Sunday and leave them in the church office any time before Ash Wednesday. Palms are burned to provide our ashes.

The Men’s Breakfast is Sat, Feb 13th at 8:30am at Mom’s on Fort Street in Trenton.
Our Next ECW General Meeting will be Sunday, Feb. 14th after the 10:00 service.

An Open Bible Study is held every Sunday Morning in the Fireplace Room at 9:05 am. We are currently reading & discussing the Gospel of Luke a chapter at a time.

Home Remedies For The Common Cold as well as for cough, sore throat, congestion, runny nose, and postnasal drip symptoms are being posted on a church bulletin board for your enjoyment. On a sheet of paper write down your favorite home remedies, sign them if you like, and then bring them to Saint James and post them. Check to see what others have posted. Hot toddy home remedies that include alcohol (for medicinal purposes!) are perfectly acceptable. – David Hartwell
Do You Share Your Life With A Pet? Last fall All God’s Creatures were featured in The Good News Weekly announcement about the Blessing of the Animals. In honor of their place in your heart and in your home please help us create a photo directory of All God’s Creatures at Saint James. Bring a photo of your pet to church and post it on the Fellowship bulletin board. Along with the photo please include your pet’s name, as well as your name. We look forward to getting to know you and your pet better.
Soup Kitchen Volunteers will next be needed on Sat. April 16th, when we will do that whole day alone: cooking and serving. We have February and March off. Coffee and Fellowship follow the 10am Service every Sunday in Galloway Hall. Volunteers are always needed to host. If you are not able to host a coffee hour but would like to contribute something we can always use packaged cookies or anything that can be frozen and used when there is no volunteer for a particular Sunday. RED DOORS: A Month of Remembrance/A Woman of Vision/A Treasured Gift
The month of February is Black History Month which celebrates important people and events in the history of the African Diaspora. A diaspora is a scattering of people into a larger culture not of their own. Wikipedia lists the expulsion of Jews from Judea, the fleeing of Greeks after the fall of Constantinople, and the African Trans-Atlantic slave trade, as examples of a diaspora. One of the largest diaspora of modern times was the African Diaspora, which dates back several centuries. During the Atlantic Slave Trade, 9.4 to 12 million people from Africa survived transportation to arrive in the Western Hemisphere as slaves. Elizabeth “Lisette” Denison Forth, was born into slavery and eventually freed. She willed her life savings to build a “proper Protestant Episcopal church, where without regard to creed, race, color or condition of servitude, people could come to worship together.”

MUSIC NOTES
A Weekly Series by Daniel Susan, our Minister of Music
This week the choir sings a Transfiguration text set to mysterious-sounding music by Peter Cutts. He tries to evoke the awe of this event, one of the most mystical happenings in the life of Christ. One message of the Transfiguration is to “go”, as Peter, James, and John want to stay and bask in the afterglow, but Jesus says no – GO! Don’t stay in this amazing but safe place, leave your mountaintop experience and get back to the real world to share it, he seems to say. The Last Sunday after the Epiphany – the final Sunday before Lent begins – is when many Christians “bury the Alleluia”, so we will likewise sing some extra ones to help mark the end of Alleluia season. Western Christianity has followed this tradition for many centuries although Orthodox Christians sing Alleluia throughout the year. Some have thrown plaster casts of the word “Alleluia” from church towers to shatter below, or planted seeds to spell the word so that by the time Easter arrives it bursts forth from the ground. Get Alleluias out of your system for a while, we’re going on an Alleluia diet …but first the feast!

Envelopes are not dated so can be used any time. Once your request is received you will be assigned a box and number. Using numbered offering envelopes helps ensure your contributions are counted for tax deduction purposes, streamlines the process for our counters each week, and is an at-home reminder of this important aspect of worship. |
