Sister Betty Leon’s “Seasons of the Heart, Autumn Program” will be held at sacred Heart Catholic Church this Tuesday, October 10th at 10AM. These seasonal interfaith mornings include meditation, song, prayer, stories, sharing, & munchies, all under the leadership of our dear friend Sister Betty. It is an hour and a half of joy which will send you into the season feeling blessed to have attended. Hoping to see you there, with love, Amy Kohair and Kate Hartwell.

A Celebratory Joint Recital on our newly finished organ is planned for Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 7:30 pm in the main sanctuary. Guest organists Doug Scott (GIPC) and Mary Hackstock (Sacred Heart) will perform with our own Bobby Ragoonanan. Come hear the pipes!

A Sunday Morning Bible Study runs between services every week from 9:05 to 9:50 AM in the Fireplace Room. Led by Fr. Phil with lots of space for discussion, this open, on-going study is a great for increasing knowledge and faith.

A Blessing of the Animals will be held on the front lawn of the church at 11:20 AM on Sunday, October 22 (after the 10AM service). Fr. Phil will wander from group to group to offer a personal blessing with you and your furry daughter or son. Birds, reptiles and other creatures of God are also welcome, but everyone please keep your littlest family members in a cage, bowl, or leash.

An All-Parish BONFIRE is being hosted by the men’s ministry group on Friday, November 3. You’re welcome to bring a snack to pass and a beverage of your choice and maybe an extra log to throw on the flyer!  The festivities begin at 7 PM.

Choral Evensong is being held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Toledo, Ohio on Saturday, October 21. To experience this wonderful meditative service, Kate & David Hartwell and whoever wants to join them will leave St. James at 2:00 p.m. There is a reception following the service, but the group may decide to grab a bite to eat at a local restaurant before returning to St. James.  Will you join us?  We hope so!  Please feel free to share this invitation with others — the more the merrier!!!  Questions or to RSVP, email or call David Hartwell at dhartwell4@yahoo.com or 313 318-9009.

 SOUP KITCHEN UPDATES

The September 16th meal at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen went wonderfully well!  We had a great team for the entire day including: Ron Martinez, Diane Larkin, Natalia Morris and her friend Santaisia, Kathy Toth, Barry & Lynda VanEngelen, Sharon & Phil Metz, Dave, Anne, Julie, and Emma Rudziensky, Mike Calahan, Laura Fornwalt, Jane and Carl Colwell!!  Dave Christie not only helped to prepare the meal, he and Judy donated the 30 pounds of hamburger for the meal!  Due to their generosity, the total cost to serve 150 people was only $286.33 ( which includes $45.00 for security)!!  We served 2 sloppy joes to each person, along with potato salad, baked beans, Kosher dill pickles and chocolate pudding for dessert.  Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were made “to go” so that everyone would have a bite to eat later in the day.  All who were served were quite happy in that there were very few left-overs and nothing was in the trash!  These are the two very best indicators of a good meal!!!

Our next turn to prepare and serve the meal at the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen, on the corner of Martin Luther King Blvd. and Trumbull, in Detroit, will be on Saturday, October 21st.  Saint James will again do the whole day.  Sign-up lists are posted on the Outreach bulletin board in the hallway.  Your help will be greatly appreciated.  If you have signed up and it turns out that you cannot go, please let us know, by calling, so that we can find a substitute for you.  We meet at our Chapel parking lot at 8:20 a.m. to load the cars with supplies and to carpoolWe arrive at Spirit of Hope at around 9:15 to begin preparing the mealThe serving group should arrive at Spirit of Hope by 11:30 in order to pray and to begin the food lineWe begin to serve at noonWe end serving and clean-up by around 1:45.

There was an error in the ECW Blue Book stating that we are finished at noon.  That is when we begin serving.  Please make a correction in your book to state that we are not done until around 1:45.

Exciting news!:  In September we were informed that the refrigerators and freezers at Spirit of Hope had all blown out due to a power outage.  Toni Mann has donated an upright freezer which will be greatly appreciated!  This is huge! Thank you to ALL of you for being the hands of Christ in this ministry.   It is good to remember that there is a very fine line between being the ones who serve and the ones who need.  Looking forward to spending time with you on October 21st!  Thank you, with Love, Amy 734-693-0694 & Frank 734-693-5904 Kohair
