A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

A typical St. James Sunday Brunch at TV Deli and Diner. Come join the fun!  J

An ECW General Meeting is scheduled for this morning, Sunday, January 14th after the 10am service in the Fireplace Room.  This is a reschedule of the original date of January 21st. Hope to see you!

Our 150th Annual Meeting of the congregation will be held on Sunday, January 28. After the 10 a.m. worship service we will gather in Galloway Hall for a fellowship lunch, a review of the year past, and preview of the year ahead. Sub sandwiches will be provided. If you can bring a side or dessert please do so!

One Worship Service will be held on Sunday, January 28, in celebration of our 150th Anniversary annual meeting of the parish.

Acolyte Training for new and current acolytes will be held on January 21 following the 10am service. We are looking to expand the acolyte team. Particularly, youth’s in 3rd grade through high school who would like 1) the opportunity to serve  2) be a part of great tradition passed down from the older acolytes 3) have a different perspective of the worship service and 4) it is super cool to carry a candle or a cross. The time commitment one can expect, ideally,  would be one Sunday a month to every 6 weeks depending on the size of our group. And involves simply showing up 15 minutes before the 10am service starts.

An Organ Recital on the chapel instrument will be held on Saturday, January 20, at 7:30PM. Come and hear performances of Renaissance and Baroque music from the U of M Ann Arbor organ studio.

“Get to Know Your Muslim Neighbor” is a Muslim-led outreach program involving food, presentations, Q & A, posters, hands-on exhibits, and conversation. Look for the announcement in the “Articles” section below! (Sat, Jan 20, 11a-3p.)

History Fair Weekend – SAVE THE DATE  Saturday, February 3 @ 7:00PM –  stories about the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln, in the mid 1800’s about the time Elizabeth Dennison Forth left her life savings so that Saint James Chapel could be built. Dessert reception follows. Sunday, February 4 immediately following the 10:00 service

– Festivities include history walk with displays, skits, treasure hunt, prizes and a hearty hot breakfast. RSVP – Kate,  katehartwell31@gmail.com or 313 318 3275

An Inquirer’s Class is planned for three Wednesday nights in January – January 10, 17, & 24. We’ll talk about what the Episcopal Church believes, answer questions that you may have, give a tour of the Church building, and generally provide a good opportunity for learning more about Saint James. The class will run from 7:15 to 8:30pm. All new members, existing members and inquirers are welcome! Speak to Fr. Phil to find out more.

ALPHA is a program that studies the most basic, essential and extraordinary elements of the Christian Faith. Why do we think Jesus died for our sins? Who is the Holy Spirit? What does it mean to live as a Christian? Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Grosse Ile has a team of lay people leading two Alpha series, one on Saturday mornings at 10AM beginning February 24, and one on Wednesday evenings at 6:30PM beginning February 21. This free program was started by an Anglican Church in London and we recommend it. Sign up or learn more at www.grosseilealpha.com

“Great Figures of the New Testament” is the topic of the Thursday afternoon book group, which meets in the Library at 1:30 p.m. In each meeting we will watch a 30-minute video by the excellent Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, a Jewish New Testament scholar who teaches at Vanderbilt University. Levine brings a Jewish perspective to scriptures written largely by Jewish persons in a Jewish context. Come hear about Mary Magdalene, Elizabeth, John the Baptist, Pontius Pilate, King Herod and more. In all, 24 persons will be discussed. Meetings begin and end with meditative prayer. After each video Fr. Phil will lead a discussion. Please drop in and join the fun.

A Great Way To Get Involved at Saint James is hosting coffee & conversation following the service. Volunteers are needed to make the coffee, serve and clean up. Coffee, tea, sugar, and creamer are all supplied, but you may bring a simple snack, such as store bought cookies, donuts, or a veggie platter. It does not need to be an elaborate spread. If you are not able to host a coffee hour, you may be interested in bringing some cookies that could be saved and served as needed.

Prayer at Communion is available every Sunday at the 10AM service. Prayer Team members stand at either side of the altar rail. After you receive the bread and wine, engage a prayer team member and ask for prayer of any kind, which they will offer on your behalf. Prayer requests are confidential.

A Sunday Morning Bible Study runs between services every week from 9:05 to 9:50 AM in the Fireplace Room. Led by Fr. Phil with lots of space for discussion, this open study is a great for increasing knowledge and faith.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello!

FEATURES & ARTICLES

Send your articles about past events or special features to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

TODAY WE ARE ANNOUNCING A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR 2018. You will receive a lot more information on this important topic in the upcoming weeks. Essentially, a capital campaign is undertaken to gather funds for large and necessary facility repairs, such as new electrical service for the Chapel (the current service is maxed out and occasionally throwing breakers), and painting and replacing rotting wood on the Chapel exterior. There are many more repairs we must make in the near term. You’ll receive a comprehensive list in the mail soon. The last time our church undertook a capital campaign was 15 years ago.

A Capital Campaign is much different from an annual giving pledge. Annually pledged funds are used for the day-to-day operation of our Church, such as paying bills for electricity, heating and cooling, parking lot maintenance, salaries and much more. It’s vital to the ongoing life of our Church that we contribute to the annual giving pledge and the capital campaign.

More information on the capital campaign will be mailed shortly. Always feel free to ask Father Phil or Vestry members if you have any questions.

“Get To Know Your Muslim Neighbor” is a drop-in program running from 11am-3pm on Saturday January 20th. Everyone is welcome! “Get to Know Your Muslim Neighbor” is a family friendly opportunity to make connections and ask questions. We will have an exhibit with posters talking about Muslim History in the US, starting from the Revolution through the Civil War. We will have posters about basic Islamic information such as: Who is Allah? How do Muslims worship? Women in Islam, What is a Hijab? and more.

There will also be hands-on activities for kids including: Exploring Calligraphy, Art in the Islamic World, coloring pages, and a “Try On a Hijab” for ladies as well as Henna.

We will provide coffee, cookies, Samosa, International Delicacies and so on. At 12:30 our presenters will give a 15-20 minute presentation called: The Forgotten History of Muslims in America. This will be a great way to break barriers and get a better understanding of a faith tradition that is still new to many of us. We hope you can come!

“Just Because” Envelopes   The colorful envelopes located in the church vestibule are there for that special time when you just want to give a little extra to the church.  Choose an envelope by number and put that much into the envelope. Certain numbers are even associated with prizes!

🎵 🎶 🎶🎵  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

This morning’s musical point of interest: : Listen closely to the prelude today, you hear how Beethoven really does manage to make music in all possible major keys! The anthem at 10:00 is a glorious setting of a familiar text by Purcell, and the postlude this morning is meant to emulate the sound of a multitude of pealing bells.

Upcoming Music Events

January 20, 7:30PM: Come and hear the Organ in the Chapel, with performances of Renaissance and Baroque music from the the U of M Ann Arbor organ studio!

Choir and bell choir is up and running! Please consider joining, all are welcome and it is a fun and exciting environment to sing, ring, and explore the rich history of church music. Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30, and Vocal Choir rehearses at 7:30 on Thursdays
