“Get to Know Your Muslim Neighbor” is a Muslim-led outreach program involving food, presentations, Q & A, posters, hands-on exhibits, and conversation. Look for the announcement in the “Articles” section below! (Sat, Jan 20, 11a-3p.)

Bishop Gibbs has announced his retirement for December, 2019. The consecration of a new bishop will occur in January of 2020. During the next two years a slowly moving call process will occur. In order, the diocese will 1) Create a Nominating and Search Committee (see the accompanying announcement below), 2) Develop a profile that conveys our diocese’s strengths, needs, hopes, and identity, 3) Publish this profile across the Episcopal Church and begin receiving nominations for bishop, 4) Interview nominees and winnow the field to no more than 5 candidates, 5) Present the slate of candidates to the diocese and have a series of events where people meet and question them, 6) Have an election at a special diocesan convention in June of 2019, 7) Bid the current bishop farewell in December of 2019, and 8) Consecrate our newly elected bishop in January of 2020.

Help Call A New Bishop to the diocese. Two important committees are now being formed to accomplish the tasks related to calling, electing, and consecrating of a new bishop. The deadline for applying to be on the Bishop “Search and Nominating Committee” is January 30, 2018, and the deadline to apply for the Bishop “Transitions Committee” is March 14. Find out more and apply at http://www.edomi.org/committee-formation-information/

An Inquirer’s Class is planned for January 24. We’ll talk about what the Episcopal Church believes, answer questions that you may have, give a tour of the Church building, and generally provide a good opportunity for learning more about Saint James. The class will run from 7:15 to 8:30pm. All new members, existing members and inquirers are welcome! Speak to Fr. Phil to find out more.

To all coffee and tea lovers,  On Tuesday, February 13, the Saint James coffee and tea club is planning a road trip to Monroe and you and your family and friends are invited!    We plan to carpool from Saint James to visit Agua Dulce Coffee & Tea for a morning cup of coffee or tea, tour Trinity Episcopal Church to see, among other things, their beautiful Tiffany windows, eat lunch at Harbor Inn & Ale or Public House, and then return to Saint James Look for the announcement in the “Articles” section below!

The Men’s Ministry Group would like to thank everyone who donated men’s Winter clothing items for our latest drive.  Dozens of coats, sweaters, gloves and mittens, socks and underwear and other cold weather items were delivered to Spirit of Hope last week and another load will be dropped off after this coming Sunday.  Know that your donations are deeply appreciated by those who make use of clothing distribution at Spirit of Hope.

“Great Figures of the New Testament” is the topic of the Thursday afternoon book group, which meets in the Library at 1:30 p.m. In each meeting we will watch a 30-minute video by the excellent Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, a Jewish New Testament scholar who teaches at Vanderbilt University. Levine brings a Jewish perspective to scriptures written largely by Jewish persons in a Jewish context. Come hear about Mary Magdalene, Elizabeth, John the Baptist, Pontius Pilate, King Herod and more. In all, 24 persons will be discussed. Meetings begin and end with meditative prayer. After each video Fr. Phil will lead a discussion. Please drop in and join the fun.

Prayer at Communion is available every Sunday at the 10AM service. Prayer Team members stand at either side of the altar rail. After you receive the bread and wine, engage a prayer team member and ask for prayer of any kind, which they will offer on your behalf. Prayer requests are confidential.

A Sunday Morning Bible Study runs between services every week from 9:05 to 9:50 AM in the Fireplace Room. Led by Fr. Phil with lots of space for discussion, this open study is a great for increasing knowledge and faith.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello!

FEATURES & ARTICLES

A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN  HAS BEEN INITIATED FOR OUR 150TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR! You will receive a lot more information on this important topic in the upcoming weeks. Essentially, a capital campaign is undertaken to gather funds for large and necessary facility repairs, such as new electrical service for the Chapel (the current service is maxed out and occasionally throwing breakers), and painting and replacing rotting wood on the Chapel exterior. There are many more repairs we must make in the near term. You’ll receive a comprehensive list in the mail soon. The last time our church undertook a capital campaign was 15 years ago.

A Capital Campaign is much different from an annual giving pledge. Annually pledged funds are used for the day-to-day operation of our Church, such as paying bills for electricity, heating and cooling, parking lot maintenance, salaries and much more. It’s vital to the ongoing life of our Church that we contribute to the annual giving pledge and the capital campaign.

More information on the capital campaign will be mailed shortly. Always feel free to ask Father Phil or Vestry members if you have any questions.

“Get To Know Your Muslim Neighbor” is a drop-in program running from 11am-3pm on Saturday January 20th. Everyone is welcome! “Get to Know Your Muslim Neighbor” is a family friendly opportunity to make connections and ask questions. We will have an exhibit with posters talking about Muslim History in the US, starting from the Revolution through the Civil War. We will have posters about basic Islamic information such as: Who is Allah? How do Muslims worship? Women in Islam, What is a Hijab? and more.

There will also be hands-on activities for kids including: Exploring Calligraphy, Art in the Islamic World, coloring pages, and a “Try On a Hijab” for ladies as well as Henna.

We will provide coffee, cookies, Samosa, International Delicacies and so on. At 12:30 our presenters will give a 15-20 minute presentation called: The Forgotten History of Muslims in America. This will be a great way to break barriers and get a better understanding of a faith tradition that is still new to many of us. We hope you can come!

“Just Because” Envelopes   The colorful envelopes located in the church vestibule are there for that special time when you just want to give a little extra to the church.  Choose an envelope by number and put that much into the envelope. Certain numbers are even associated with prizes!

To all coffee and tea lovers,  On Tuesday, February 13, the Saint James coffee and tea club is planning a road trip to Monroe and you and your family and friends are invited!

We plan to carpool from Saint James to visit Agua Dulce Coffee & Tea for a morning cup of coffee or tea, tour Trinity Episcopal Church to see, among other things, their beautiful Tiffany windows, eat lunch at Harbor Inn & Ale or Public House, and then return to Saint James.  The club welcomes new members and there is no cost to join.  Every month on the Monday after the first Sunday an order is placed with CoffeeAM for coffee and tea, but there is never any obligation to buy.  FYI — the coffee served at coffee hour after church services is from CoffeeAM.  Periodic emails are sent to members with news about an upcoming order, about a road trip, about a taste test program, etc..

If you are not a coffee and tea club member yet but would like to join just let me know your email address and consider yourself a member!  Recently members were polled what day(s) of the week were good for them to go on road trips, etc., and Tuesday and Friday were chosen.  Let me know if either or both of these two days are also good for you.  Your input is encouraged because it will help shape the plans for future club events.

Sincerely,

David Hartwell   dhartwell4@yahoo.com      (313) 318-9009  Cell      ( 734) 752-6875  Home

This morning’s musical point of interest: : Our prelude this morning is one of Froberger’s interesting Fantasias for organ, in which he bases an entire piece off of a certain set of pitches…in this case, re, fa, and re. And at the 10:00 communion we hear a rare organ piece by the classical Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini, who is very well known for his beautiful operas, particularly Norma and I puritani.
