LET’S WATCH A MOVIE
CHURCH MOVIE NIGHT! This Tuesday, Jan 23, lets meet at Emagine in Woodhaven at 6:45 p.m. to watch a 7PM movie featuring the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. He serves as the keynoter in a documentary movie called “A Case for Love.” People across the country share powerful stories of selfless love. Showing one night only, come and eat popcorn with Fr. Phil!
ALL WOMEN of the congregation are welcome to attend a general ECW meeting on Sun, Jan. 21, at 11:15 a.m. in the Fireplace Room.
HELP THE HOMELESS tomorrow, on Monday, January 22, at Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church. All the Island Churches unite to put on a one-week warming shelter every winter. Other communities take other weeks. Our day is MONDAY. Look on the hallway bulletin board for open slots to sign up to help. Sue Lowery, Interfaith Council Rep, 734-771-2503.
A PARISH BREAKFAST will be served on Sunday, January 28, after the 10am service. Partway through the meal we’ll present the 2024 Alice Award recipients and then continue with a rousing and energetic annual meeting of the church. Don’t miss it!
RECEPTION, REAFFIRMATION, AND CONFIRMATION are led by a bishop in the Episcopal Church. On Saturday, May 11, Bishop Bonnie will be with us for a diocesan
service focused on these three things. To be RECEIVED into the Episcopal Church from another denomination or no denomination, to RENEW your Christian faith, or to be CONFIRMED as an adult in the church if you were baptized as an infant, speak to Fr. Phil. He will be offering a short series of preparatory classes.
BISHOP BONNIE PERRY is featured in as a uniter in a recent article: hourdetroit.com/community/2024-hour-detroiters-the-unifier/
THE GROSSE ILE QUINTET WILL PERFORM “Peter and the Wolf” and “Frog and Toad” with narration by Carl Grapentine and Krista Schafer. Admission is free and children will receive both books as part of their introduction to classical music. DID YOU MISS OUT ON THE ORIGINAL KRINGLE SALE? If so, you are in luck! David Hartwell has 10 lonely Kringles who are looking for good homes. They are $12 each and benefit the church. Talk to David for info!
THE BLACK PLASTIC by the back parking lot is Phase I of a several-phase “Re-nature-ification Project” approved by the Vestry last summer. Once the sun-blocking plastic has killed the grass (mid-Spring), we will seed native species of flowering plants in that area. In the first year it may look rough, since many wildflowers take several years to get established. Taking the long view, after 2-4 years we should have a thriving ecosystem of wildflowers that are good for Grosse Ile and beautiful to behold. And if not, we’ll plant some nice grass! Watching the process should be fun and educational—keep an eye on this space.
A CELEBRATION OF ABSALOM JONES will be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral on Saturday, February 3, at 4pm. Absalom was the first African-American person ordained in the Episcopal Church. All are welcome!
A NEW BOOK CLUB TIME is planned for the next six weeks. Beginning immediately we will meet on Thursday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. The book is awesome! Pick up

AN INTERMENT AND ORGAN RECITAL for Barbara Massey , a former parishioner and organist at Saint James, is being planned for Saturday, February 17. Look for more information to follow.
A SEMINAR ON WHITE NATIONALISM, led by leaders in the Episcopal Church will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3. The seminar will examine the historical, theological, and biblical underpinnings of White Christian Nationalism and explore practical, pastoral and prophetic responses to it. Guest speakers include biblical scholar and theologian Walter Brueggemann and New York Times bestselling authors Kristin Du Mez and Jemar Tisby. Cost is $20. Register online at http://tiny.cc/81fzvz
“THE LIFE OF CHRIST” is the focus of our Saturday morning discussion group beginning Saturday, February 3rd at 9:30am in the church library across from the office. Each week the group will look at a different aspect of Jesus’ life. Pat Zavadil has led this group many times to rave reviews. Come and be a part of this introduction to the life of Jesus Christ. The goal is to open doors that will help you learn who He was and is, so that you may follow Him as well as those who knew Him face to face.
A COMIC BOOK “BIBLE STUDY” FOR ADULTS is being planned for Tuesday evenings from 6:00-7:00pm in the Church library. The “Action Bible” is the whole Bible presented in a comic book style, allowing you to cover lots of ground in a short period of time with great visuals. Led by Fr. Phil, this study will help you hold the whole Biblical story in your mind at once. Sign-up for the first class on the magnetic bulletin board by the front doors. A handout of the first week’s reading can be found on the Resource Table.
A SUNDAY MORNING 9AM BIBLE STUDY begins on February 11 and will run during the season of Lent this year. Fr. Phil will lead this study in the Fireplace Room from 9:00-9:50 a.m., focusing on the Book of Ephesians. You do not need to know about the Bible to come! Also, you do not need to plan ahead. Each week we will read a full chapter aloud, then discuss what occurs to us. Commit to the whole 6-week study, or just come when you can.
