Our Annual Parish Meeting will be held today at 11:15am. Lunch included!

Scout Sunday will be celebrated on Feb. 9. 2020

Canned Goods are being collected in a hallway basket. Everything gathered goes directly to the Sacred Heart Food Pantry to help Grosse Ile families. This collection is perpetual and ongoing. Please feel free to donate non perishable foods to help the cause at any time. Maybe get in the habit of buying something extra when you do your own grocery shopping?

Study The Bible On Sunday Mornings at 9:07am in the Fireplace Room. We start by reading aloud a chapter from St. Paul’s fascinating epistle to the Romans. Then an open discussion follows, guided by Fr. Phil. Come and try it out this Sunday.

What About The Old Testament? On February 6th our Thursday study group begins a DVD video series on the Old Testament. In each session we will begin by watching a 25-minute video of world-renowned Jewish Biblical scholar Dr. Amy-Jill Levine teaching about a major Old Testament story. Passages will include the Creation, the Passover, the conquest of the land of Canaan, the reign of David, and much more. Open discussion follows. Led by Fr. Phil these programs require no advanced preparation, no reading ahead, and no commitment. We will be watching these videos on Thursday mornings at 10:30am in the Library throughout the seasons of Lent and Easter. Come as you are able!

THE SAINT JAMES WISH LIST

Listed below are some things that St. James would love to have, but the budget does not allow them at this time. If one of these items speaks to your heart, please make a donation toward the purchase. All partial gifts will be gratefully accepted and put toward the total cost. Also, if you see or think of something that should be on this list, please let us know at goodnews@saintjamesgi.net!

  • Do you have an item for the Wish List?  Please speak to a Vestry member or Fr. Phil to have your wish listed here.

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

A special “Thank You” is extended to Wendy Kiblawi, Lois Zook, and Madeline Jones for providing the wonderful reception following the last concert as part of our “St. James Music Series” on Jane 18.  The receptions following the programs are new this year and have been well received by those in attendance and they give everyone the opportunity to meet the musicians.

Please accept my apologies for not including the names of the musicians who assisted in the 10:00 A.M. worship this last Sunday.  Many thanks to Nancy Gruits – oboe, Colleen Herman – flute, Carole Scott – viola, Jennifer Drake – cello, and Roger VonDaylen – organ.

Upcoming Event:

Saturday, February 15, 2020 7:00 P.M. in the chapel.   “The Charles M. Ruggles Chapel Organ”  In partnership with the University of Michigan School of Music, students of James Kibbie (University Organist), and Kola Owalabi  (organ, improvisation, and sacred music) will present a program of organ music. The Ruggles organ is interesting in construction and tonality and challenges organists to use creative registrations.

Friday, March 6, 2020  7:00 P.M. in the main church.   “Journey to the Cross”  Dr. Brandon D. Spence will help audience members prepare their hearts and minds in their Lenten journey through the genres of Gospel, Jazz, and more.  Dr. Spence is the Director of Music at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia. A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Brandon pursued undergraduate studies at Old Dominion University.  Graduate studies in organ performance and church music were undertaken at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he earned the D.M.A. in performance under the tutelage of Marilyn Mason, James Kibbie and Robert Glasgow.  Expect to be inspired and lifted up in this evening of music and song.

An Invitation for all pianists and instrumentalists…   If you would like to play one or more selections during the 10:00 A.M. worship service, please speak with our Minister of Music Jim Johnson.  As an inviting and inclusive community of worshipers, we want to give those with musical gifts the opportunity to participate in worship in such a way.
