A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

“Peace be with you”

“ And also with you”

This Sunday: Help Needed Can you help set up tables and chairs for this Sunday’s big 150th Celebration? The service begins at 10AM. Outside set-up begins at 9AM. Thank you!”

This Saturday is the 150th BBQ/Potluck/Concert/Bonfire!   A huge celebration is planned for Saturday, July 14th on the front lawn of the church starting at 6 o’clock. Our men’s group will be grilling burgers and dogs. Parishioners will bring potluck sides or desserts (soft drinks provided, but bring your own adult beverages). From 6:30 to 8:30 the musical group “Picks and Bows” will be playing lively music of the type people would have enjoyed in the 1860’s. And we’ll end the evening with a great bonfire on the front lawn. Friends, family, community members are all welcome.

One Wonderful, Beautiful, Special Service of Worship will be held on Sunday, July 15th at 10AM. Our bishop will be our presider for this special 150th Anniversary Event and The Rev. Dr. Shannon MacVean-Brown will be our guest preacher.  Shannon began her ministry in the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, where she most recently served as Rector of St. Matthew’s and St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Detroit, where she led her congregation to start a community development organization, she worked with an interfaith group to open a client-choice food pantry that was a collaboration between several churches and nonprofit organizations, and led her parish to become a vital presence in the transformation of the neighborhood around them.

Free 8×10 Family Photos  Now is the time to sign up for your photo shoot!  Lifetouch is offering a professional photo shoot to individuals and families and a free 8×10 photo to everyone who participates, on top of numerous discounts on packages if you should choose to get prints made. We are asking everyone to please get a new picture taken for our directory. It only takes a few minutes and is a great time to update your family picture on your wall! Since this is our 150th Anniversary, and we are partying it up this year, we would really like an updated directory with all of your smiling faces. You can sign up on our website at saintjamesgi.net to reserve your spot. We ask that you sign up soon, as spots are filling quickly. If you cannot make our two dates we will have a make up day on August 28, time tbd. Please call Colleen in the office to schedule an appointment if you are not comfortable signing up online.

New Bishop Survey! Help choose the next bishop of the diocese by registering your hopes and concerns. An all-diocese survey has been released by the Bishop Search and Nomination Committee:  tinyurl.com/mi-bishopsurvey

Capital Campaign projects have begun. If you haven’t yet pledged, you can pledge on line at saintjamesgi.net/cc150 . Thank you for pitching in.

Register for VBS online at www.saintjamesgi.net. Vacation Bible School is a free week-long day camp open to all members of Saint James, residents of the Island, and friends. Children from 3 years old to 5th grade participate in all activities, while older youth get to serve as helpers and leaders. All are welcome! Adults, we need your help too. Please speak to Nancy Crysler, our children’s ministries coordinator, if you are available to help. August 13-17, 9-11:30am.

Are you a Coffee Lover?   The Saint James coffee and tea club is planning a Tuesday, August 7 road trip to Plymouth, Michigan and we hope you will come along for the ride!  We will gather in the parking lot at the church at 8:45 in the morning, pile into carpool vehicles and leave by 9:00.  Our first destination will be Espresso Elevado for the coffee lovers in the club, and then Sweet Afton Tea Room for the tea lovers in the club.  Then it is time for some serious, or not so serious, shopping and sightseeing around town before we gather at Karl’s Cabin for lunch.  An RSVP is requested and Tuesday, July 31 is the RSVP deadline.  A reservation for 20 has been made at Karl’s Cabin.  This road trip to Plymouth promises to be a lot of fun.  Be one of the first 20 to RSVP!  David Hartwell / dhartwell4@yahoo.com / 313 318-9009

Prayer Ministry This Summer  continues in the chapel. If you would like prayers during communion, come to the back of the church by the red doors that lead to the front parking lot. In that small narthex the prayer minister will be glad to hear your needs and pray with you.

Save the Float  We are in need of a place to store our beautiful Island chapel float to be used in future years. Please let us know if you have a pole barn or storage area that could help.

The Next Soup Kitchen Will Be July 21st  Sign-ups will be on the Soup Kitchen bulletin board in the hallway between the Sunday School room and the Choir room.  Our Prep Crew will meet in our Chapel parking lot at 8:20am to load up they cars and head out. Servers should be at Spirit of Hope by 11:30am.  We will all be on our way home, or out to lunch, by 1:40pm.  The August 18th meal will be prepared and served by the Detroit Moose Hockey Team, so we will have it off.

Open Bible Study  A drop-in Bible Study runs every Sunday morning from 9:05-9:50AM in the Fireplace Room. The study requires no preparation, and you can come on whatever Sundays are convenient for you. Drop in any time!

Coffee Hour  Thank you to those who have brought in desserts for Coffee Hour.  It really helps to have these in our freezer when no one has volunteered to man the kitchen.  Help for setup, serving and clean-up is always appreciated, especially when there is only one person in the kitchen.  Please consider taking a turn so that Coffee Hour can continue.  Look for the signup sheet in a blue folder that is usually on the dessert table.

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tues-Thurs 9-2, &  Fri 9-noon.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello

FEATURES AND ARTICLES

Hello to all of you coffee and tea drinkers,

This is rather lengthy, but fun, so pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea and then start reading!

Did you know that Saint James has its own coffee and tea club and that you are already a member?!?!  There is no cost to join the club, there are never any dues to pay, and there are always fun events and road trips being planned.  You get all of this for absolutely nothing!  Welcome to the club!  A number of you are already “card carrying members” (LOL) and have your names on a mailing list to receive an email shortly before the first Sunday of every month reminding you that a coffee and tea order will be called in on the Monday after the first Sunday.  I would be happy to add your name to the list.

CoffeeAM roasts the coffee that is served at coffee hour after Sunday worship services, and they are our club’s coffee roaster as well.  They also offer a wonderful selection of teas.  Feel free to go to their website — http://www.coffeeam.com — and explore the wonderful world of coffee and tea that awaits you.  Club prices are 25% to as much as 40+% less than the retail prices that appear on the CoffeeAM website.  Our order will be roasted, bagged and then shipped, arriving by the end of the week.  If I don’t happen to see you in church on the second Sunday of the month I will leave your order in the church office.  You can put a check for what you owe me (I will let you know the amount) in Kate’s and my mailbox down the hallway.  One of the added “perks” for those of us who drink coffee is that we can buy 1/2 pound bags of coffee for just pennies more than half the price of 1 pound bags.

Speaking of “perks”, I was not paid to write any of what you are about to read in the next paragraph!

One local business that serves delicious cold brew coffee is Elizabeth Perk Coffee & Ice Cream in Trenton.  Order it black and take a sip or two from the clear plastic cup that it is served in with ice, cold brew coffee concentrate and water to see how good it tastes, then ask for a little half and half to add to it.  It is visually something to see, the creamy white Guernsey half and half being added to the rich, dark, cold brew coffee — and the taste is to die for!  And speaking of to die for, if you love ice cream, try a scoop or two of their Guernsey ice cream sometime.  It is to die for as well!

I hope you will enjoy the following Simply Recipes site, titled How to Make Cold Brew Coffee. This is but one site, and I welcome you to explore others as well.  https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/how_to_make_cold_brew_coffee/

If you have any questions about the coffee and tea club feel free to email, call, or text me.

In the coming weeks everyone on the mailing list will receive an email with details about a fun coffee and tea club road trip being planned for August.  Everyone is invited.  Are you on the mailing list?!

 WISH LIST

—  Monetary Donations to go toward Christmas music and new books for the Choir.

🎵 🎶 🎶  MUSIC NOTES  🎵🎶🎶 🎵

Music Notes:  Happy 150th! We welcome back recurring soloists Colleen Herman, Flute, and Jill Robinson, Soprano. Our prelude this morning is by esteemed French composer Cécile Chaminade, one of the first women composers of note. She composed mostly for the piano and made a living during her lifetime performing her own works. As her music is extremely difficult, she must have been an astounding pianist as well as a composer. The choir anthem today by Anton Bruckner is one of several terrific choral pieces by this Austrian composer. Bruckner was an organist at one of the major churches in Vienna, and was also a talented composer of Symphonies and Masses.

Upcoming Music Events:

Summer Music Listening Classes continue in July. These classes last about an hour, during which we will talk about a significant composer of church music and listen to one or more major works. In June, classes will be:

July 19, 7:30pm: Ola Gjeilo (b. 1978) and the Sunrise Mass

July 26, 7:30pm: George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) and the Resurrection Oratorio
