CAN YOU HELP WITH ICE CREAM SUNDAYS after a 10am service? It involves 3 things: 1) Either before the service or after communion (take communion first), move some ice cream treats from the standup freezer in the middle rummage room into the cooler and the cart standing next to it. 2) Fill up a clear reservoir with ice water in the kitchen and place it on the cart with some paper or plastic cups. 3) Push the cart to the front parking lot at the end of the service and put it all away after 20 minutes or so. This is a HUGE SERVICE to all our members, plus the kids especially love it! Look for the sign-up calendar near the kitchen and thank you!

Notes On Today’s Musical Selections
By Dr. Jim Parker

Prelude: I’ve been working on all three preludes by Gershwin, in fact, played a duet version of Prelude I in church with Jenny Simon a long time ago.  All three are wonderful, as Gershwin is a major figure in American musical history, mostly due to “Rhapsody in Blue” and “Porgy and Bess” the most famous song of which is “Summertime”.  Doug Scott wrote a trio for the Russia Tour of the Grosse Ile Chorale in 2003, which included “Summertime” for Barbara Klemans, Jill Ryan, and Chris Kane.  It was a huge hit and has been sung at many Memorial services since.

Special Music at 10am: Jesus, Jesus Rest Your Head is an Appalacian Folk Carol collected by John Jacob Niles, probably from his time there in 1912-1913 or 1932=1934.

OffertoryNorman Dello Joio was an American classical composer of great renown.  He was active for half a century.  “Arietta” comes from a set of five pieces for piano.  I played the whole set at a Grosse Ile Musicale recital several years ago, when the theme was American music.  Local piano teacher Doris Richards suggested them to me.

Postlude: “Piano Man” was in a classically arranged [by Charles Lindberg) Billy Joel book on Michelle Lepidi’s piano when I was working with her on a solo last year.  It was actually Ken’s book.  Who knew Ken played piano?  I asked to borrow it and fell in love with the arrangements.  I googled it, as I wanted my own copy.  Turns out it’s out of print, and second hand copies are going for $1200.  Joel should reissue the book.  Who’s going to tell him? How do you get a hold of someone that famous?
