A HOLY MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Send yours to goodnews@saintjamesgi.net

On the Sunday of our 150th Anniversary the altar flowers are placed at Lisette’s grave in Detroit.

The Channel 4 Coverage of our 150th was impressive. If you missed it, check it outhttps://www.clickondetroit.com/news/church-founded-by-michigans-first-female-black-landowner-celebrates-150th-anniversary

Time Capsule! St. James will be burying a time capsule on August 19th to be opened in 50 years. We need assistance from every single one of you to make this successful. 1) Answer writing prompts provided or write your own thoughts. These will be compiled in a bound document. 2) Create a scrapbook page for your household that represents or tells about your household in anyway you can imagine. 3) Submit photos of events or loved ones or of the buildings and grounds that can be included in a photo book. All submissions must be in by Sunday, August 5th. Every Sunday at coffee hour leading up to August 5th supplies to participate in this way will be available. For your convenience, you may also send writing prompt responses and photos to stjatimecap@outlook.com. Tom and Erica Benson are heading up this project. Please see them with any questions or give them the above requested things.

Capital Campaign projects have begun. If you haven’t yet pledged, you can pledge on line at saintjamesgi.net/cc150 . Thank you for pitching in.

Register for VBS online at www.saintjamesgi.net. Vacation Bible School is a free week-long day camp open to all members of Saint James, residents of the Island, and friends. Children from 3 years old to 5th grade participate in all activities, while older youth get to serve as helpers and leaders. All are welcome! Adults, we need your help too. Please speak to Nancy Crysler, our children’s ministries coordinator, if you are available to help. August 13-17, 9-11:30am.

Road Trip!!   The Saint James coffee and tea club is planning a Tuesday, August 7 road trip to Plymouth, Michigan and we hope you will come along for the ride!  We will gather in the parking lot at the church at 8:45 in the morning, pile into carpool vehicles and leave by 9:00.  Our first destination will be Espresso Elevado for the coffee lovers in the club, and then Sweet Afton Tea Room for the tea lovers in the club.  Then it is time for some serious, or not so serious, shopping and sightseeing around town before we gather at Karl’s Cabin for lunch.  An RSVP is requested and Tuesday, July 31 is the RSVP deadline.  A reservation for 20 has been made at Karl’s Cabin.  This road trip to Plymouth promises to be a lot of fun.  Be one of the first 20 to RSVP!  David Hartwell / dhartwell4@yahoo.com / 313 318-9009

Prayer Ministry This Summer  continues in the chapel. If you would like prayers during communion, come to the back of the church by the red doors that lead to the front parking lot. In that small narthex the prayer minister will be glad to hear your needs and pray with you.

Save the Float  We are in need of a place to store our beautiful Island chapel float to be used in future years. Please let us know if you have a pole barn or storage area that could help.

The Next Soup Kitchen Will Be This Saturday, July 21st  Our Prep Crew will meet in our Chapel parking lot at 8:20am to load up they cars and head out. Servers should be at Spirit of Hope by 11:30am.  We will all be on our way home, or out to lunch, by 1:40pm.

Open Bible Study  A drop-in Bible Study runs every Sunday morning from 9:05-9:50AM in the Fireplace Room. The study requires no preparation, and you can come on whatever Sundays are convenient for you. Drop in any time!

Coffee Hour  Thank you to those who have brought in desserts for Coffee Hour.  It really helps to have these in our freezer when no one has volunteered to man the kitchen.  Help for setup, serving and clean-up is always appreciated, especially when there is only one person in the kitchen.  Please consider taking a turn so that Coffee Hour can continue.  Look for the signup sheet in a blue folder that is usually on the dessert table.

Gluten-Free Wafers are always available at communion. Just ask.

Secretary Office Hours:  Colleen is in the office Tues-Thurs 9-2, &  Fri 9-noon.

Open Office Hours  Fr. Phil is available for appointments throughout the week for meetings of any length, but on Tuesday evenings you never need an appointment. Drop in any Tuesday between 4:30-6:30 pm and say hello

Buckwheat Pancake Recipe   For those who have asked, here is the recipe for last week’s 150th Anniversary Buckwheat pancakes:

1 Cup buckwheat flour

1 Cup white flour (or whole wheat)

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp salt

4 Tbsp unsalted butter (melted)

1 Tbsp pure maple syrup

2 large eggs

2 1/4 Cup buttermilk

Whisk together the buckwheat and white flours, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl. In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, maple syrup, and eggs. Add the buttermilk to the butter mixture. Dump the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and beat until just combined — do not overmix! The batter will be thick. *** Heat a griddle or skillet over medium heat. Lightly slick the surface of the griddle with butter or cooking spray. Spoon 1/3 Cup batter onto the hot surface. Cook for 2 minutes then flip. Cook until golden brown.  — Thanks to our caterer, The Gormet Gal (Missy Misko: 734-635-5454), for providing the meal last Sunday and for sharing her recipe with us.

What Happened at General Convention? The Episcopal Church just wrapped up its 12-day convention. Lots of important decisions were made, and Fr. Phil was there for them all. His top three news items include 1) a plan to keep the current Book of Common Prayer, while encouraging liturgical experimentation and the creation of supplemental liturgies; 2) Marriage Equality for the whole church, where everyone, gay or straight, can be married in their home church; and 3) the admission of Cuba as a new diocese in the Episcopal Church. Lots more than this happened, though. We also added people to our saints calendar, passed a budget that prioritizes evangelism, racial reconciliation, and creation care, and created a number of Task Forces to do such things as study liturgical development, sexual harassment of women in the ministry, and to find ways of remaining in communion with one another, even when we have strongly held differing opinions. To hear more ask Fr. Phil about the experience. Also you can read this Episcopal News Service synopsis of the convention: https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/07/16/general-convention-wrap-up-following-the-way-of-jesus/
